  • In this video you will see Part 2 of the removal and replacement of a Steering Coupler/Rag Joint on a 1977 C3 Corvette. This video focusses on the replacement of the Steering Coupler / Rag Joint. Also included in this video is the installation of the steering gear, or steering box from the C3. This video will clearly show how to remove the Rag-Joint combined with some of the challenges along the way. This video may also be applicable to any mid 1970's GM and/or Chevy vehicle. Specific torque numbers are also provided:
    Steering Coupler / Rag Joint Pinch Bolts (30-32Ft Lbs)
    Rag Joint Flange Bolts (12 FtLbs)
    Steer Gear box to frame bolts (30 FtLbs).

    I notice you didn't use anything from the 2nd box of the repair kits. The 2nd box is all I have to replace with but I don't think that will be enough to actually complete the job by itself. I need an assembled part to slip on the steering gear box side I believe.

    Thanks for doings this and the rest of your videos. I really appreciate them. Do you think it could have made your job of steering box installation a little easier by pulling your steering column back a few inches and then installed the rag joint as one piece, then slide the steering column back in place? I only ask as I want to do this myself. Thanks again

      I think you could do that and I was on the fence about doing it. At the end of the day it was easier for me to remove the steering box and do it that way, plus I could clean and refresh my steering box at the same time. I think many people pull the steering column back, I just didn't want to open that additional issue. Thanks for watching and sending in a comment as well. J

    Nice video! I will definitely have more confidence doing mind. I see you painted your frame behind the steering box or did you use POR 15? I remember in an earlier video you talked about doing your frame with POR 15.

      I just painted the frame behind the steering box as a temporary solution. It's still too cold where I am to use the POR 15. I will be using POR 15 this spring starting with the right front frame / wheel well so I can finally put the front right suspension back together. Then repeat as soon as possible with the left front, and then the rear left and right. Lots of work ahead. Thank you for your comment and watching the videos. Much appreciated. J

      @@Mrelectric423 That's excellent and good luck with that job. Don't forget to save the part of your original coupler that attaches to the steering column..you will need that as the kits don't come with that part. J
