I wasn't expecting much from this but it turned out better than I was expecting. It's still early Beta and there's a long way to go, buy maybe there's something interesting here? Meanwhile, we've also checked out a bunch of other new games recently, so here's the playlist: gamerzakh.com/encounters
They aren't timberlings, they are already called the timberborn. But beavers is already enough. The sims are simulations, simulated people. So beavers can be beevs if you really feel the need for an overly cutesy name. But otherwise they are the timberborn.

Yes the trees from the triassic were the first to develop lignin(wood) allowing them to grow tall. At the time nothing existed that could decompose lignin so it just stacked up into massive deposits which later became coal.
I will definitely try out their open beta and provide feedback on the theme and gameplay after I played it myself. It looks interesting enough that I want it to be good. For gardens on roofs you should have a tech that allows you to make timber gardens with fertalizer. Make it a mid or late game tech
Man i came for your help in Caesar III a few days ago but now i don't necessarily care too much about what you're playing, you're just super likeable and nice to listen to! Also damn you for intensifying my itch for city-building again, considering i prefer to play on my Switch which is seriously lacking in that genre :D. Edit: Also agree with the personality part soo much! The first thing i look at in city-builders is how the look makes me feel. That's why i love the Anno series so much, because the rennaisance age is just so beautiful!j
For a game about beavers it appears that there are not enough structures directly on water - e.g. a dam which is a typical beaver structure. The river is right there and we seem to be getting further away from it :) I would like to see more interaction with the river from the very beginning and then slowly moving to the land - evolving from beavers to timberlings :D
hmm having a city-builder with beavers is really challenging ... what comes to my mind are damns and water levels. Similar to the dwarf fortress you should be able to amass a huge body of water and then build your base inside it. Then you have to deal with droughts, winter and maybe water pollution? It would be an interesting concept of expanding via flooding the area and researching new technology to further improve the damn structure to get access to even more areas.
Personality/style is such a big part of why I love games like Two Point Hospital. 100% agree, so important, gimme all the silly names (and diseases). Love that whole part of the video.
I really hope they go all-in on the fact they are beavers. We need Dam's. Building a Dam should be their version of a Wonder. I wanna see wood-related food, Bark Bread, Sawdust sprinkled desert, Sap Snacks. Waterways for travel whether by swimming or little boats they row with their tails.
Speaking of verticality, you may want to check Cliff Empire. A great game with loads of surprising stuff to unlock that constantly change the management of the space given to the player
@@GamerZakh - It looked easy too. My brain has already been designing ziggurats and towers of varying size and complexity, some with courtyards, others not.
Thank you for the great review. Just subscribed to your channel. You deserve a pat on the back for keeping old games such as Caesar 3 and Pharaohs going. Have you ever played or reviewed Diablo 2 LOD? Latest version is D3, and although its not a city building game, point to note is that D2 LOD was released in 2001 making it a nostalgic addition to your list.
i really like the concept for the power generation. building up is also a very interesting choice. but you're right though, if they're going to mke their people beavers, i hope they'll make the entire game accordingly whacky =)
Fun idea, but I'm kinda sad they didn't go for a more water-based theme, having a grand dam as the "city center", and then using various kinds of dam-like structures in the water and on the shores, with modular functionality for the dams (Beaverdams IRL are marvels of engineering, with rooms, several entrances, etc, both below and above water.) Granted, multi-level building is kinda nice, but to me this just feels like yet another survival sim town-management game, only with beavers instead of humans. Cute, but I think I'd would make a bigger splash if it went for that dam theme.
I think if they go far more anthropomorphic with the beavers that would give the game more personality. If they want to go cute with the game then making the colors vibrate would help out as well. Otherwise, if they are going more serious than the colors works right now. But I think giving a slight cute or even comical edge would be interesting. Personally, I prefer cute and vibrate, especially if I am going to be playing a game with anthro beavers.
Thank you Zakh for your excellent videos... Honestly you got the real job marvelous done !! Only one humble suggestions, you need to work on you video image. This is a constructive critic, please take my suggestion with humility. New hair style, more colors on your dress-code and change to a new glasses frame. A very on-point discussion about personality, and the more intangible, artistic choices in games. I don't know whether you heard of it, but there's an older game called Alien Nations, which is, so to speak, a spiritual predecessor to Banished. Basically, you are building a town / colony, where you don't manage your underlings directly, but rather assign them jobs / tasks. It was something of a combination between Settlers and an RTS, as combat was the main focus point of the game. Nevertheless, when Banished came out, I was quite looking forward to playing it, since it looked so similar to Alien Nations gameplay-wise. So I bought the game and after a few hours only felt disappointment. Banished simply lacked soul, personality, character, or whatever else you want to call it. The thing is, while Alien Nations was a rather simple game, it was just so weird and charming. The three titular nations were the blue-skinned, beer-loving, Homer-Simpson-looking orcs; the fierce and seductive Amazonians who had a penchant for chocolate cakes; and a race of mischievous, shady insectoids who could be seen smoking a fat cigar at any and all times. And the whole backstory was that of intergalactic storks dropping their alien baby loads by accident on the same planet, thus starting the conflict between the three nations in the first place. I don't know who came up with that stuff, but it certainly made the game much, much more memorable. I understand that to a large degree it's the nostalgia that makes me like the game more than it probably deserves, but still, I recently played through it (it's on GOG), and I still enjoyed it a lot. Goes to show that the ideal game is not just what's inside (technical aspects), and neither only what's on the outside (artistic choices) but a combination of both of them!
This makes me want to finish my achievements in banished 😄 looks super cute, and i may add, you’re looking more handsome than ever, salute to your lovely wife keep up the good spirit ✨✨✨
@@GamerZakh It is, but then you get franchises like Resistance and Time Splitters not getting developed due to resources going elsewhere. I know not these devs :)

You, I would much rather have seen them double (or triple) down on actual beaver building. You know, dams! If you're going to have beavers do human things, then just use human sprites. I see no redeeming quality in them being beavers for the sake of it. So, if the developers really want to be creative: make a kind of XCOM, but instead of a subterranean command center, you have to build a dam with compartments, and that means you have to scout on the map outside of your dam to look for resources. Now that game I would play!
YES! Biever should be doing beavery things, not any other game BUT now with beaver skin! The worst thing for this game would be, it to become an overpriced Banished mod.
I played lethis, but got really bored of the simplistic gameplay loop. If you want to keep people engaged with purely economy based city builders you have to learn from the Anno series, especially the earlier ones. There was military, but it was so limited you basically produced them as a resource, rather than using any strategy.
I did find the lack of military took away a lot of the 'stress' that I feel makes a game engaging. When it's purely economic problems you can just take your time and eventually figure stuff out.
