- In the spring of 2012 a panel of locum tenens physicians was brought together to discuss and provide insight into physician careers and health care. They represent a wide range of specialties, from primary care to cardiology, from psychiatry to pediatrics.
This video offers medical students advice on enjoying more out of medical stuff, developing interpersonal relationships, finding a mentor, who to listen to in medical school, and listening to your heart.

"I always followed my heart" -Cardiologist.
Alberto Bermejo haha
Alberto Bermejo ohhh man lol
Alberto Bermejo bars 🔥
"Just follow your heart. That's what I do." - Napoleon Dynamite
Alberto Bermejo exactly what i thought while she was saying it
Am I the only one who thinks it is funny that the cardiologist tells you to follow your heart
HAHA! I didn't catch on to that, thanks for the laugh :)
"I followed my heart... and became a cardiologist"- LOL
lol
I wish she would've made a joke out of that. She was way too serious when she said it lol. Missed opportunity
Yes I loved what Dr Ayaram said! "Study yourself. You glorify God when you are most happy. So find out what your going to be happy in and follow that and you will succeed!"
Me too, I was like "wooah" lemme write it down.
Hello
Love what the last doctor said! His words actually gave me hope because I am in the middle of deciding if this is really what I want to do! I'm glad I came across his words! =)
funnydayz Got any update on your career?
+funnydayz Hope you are really enjoying your decision made!
***** i think she dropped and doesn't want to say anything
***** Law school you help people as well! :) There's been so many videos of people being released from jail due to DNA test proving them innocent. MBA it depends. Med school is a pain...the highest suicide rate for occupations is medical doctors. Used to be dentists, but general medical doctors are higher now. Gotta think about it :/
***** If you want to talk about this, let me know. I got accepted into med school already, so I can provide some information.
Another bit of advice to med students (which this extends to everybody, student or not) : you NEED to sleep. Often time med students don't get the sleep they need because they are working or studying. Being well-rested leads to better decisions, faster reaction time/memory recall, less stress, and HIGHER TEST SCORES!!!
As a side note, there is nothing wrong with taking a break for a while. even if it's just 3 minutes to breath and clear your mind, if you study hard and learn to relax effectively, you will do great things.
It is much easier said than done.
Certainly, it is. But I did it. At the very least, get 5-6 hours of sleep a night.
yess..as a result they refuse their meds.. like Ambien and consequently lack sleep. not sleeping is worse than smoking.
Last advice was the best ;)
I appreciate the last doctor from my heart. I would like to listen to Dr. Shrimant Ayaram more. Are there more videos/speech of him? Is it possible to upload them? I happened not to find any.
Things happened in my life tearing it apart. Yet my dreams not tilted. I arrived. In between, it was a period of tremendous patience. Gloria!
I feel that everything they said, if I do them I will probably not become an MD. But that last guy. Not only was his short and to the point, but it is extremely accurate and is used throughout our entire lfie
DayG I agree Deji!
oh!!!! I love the last doctors advice i actually clapped.. Gives me hope.
The last piece of advice is the BEST piece of advice ever given.
The last advice was heart touching specially with that progressing background music .
the last man to speak said it all: 'have a dream and no matter what happens you arrive' 'you glorify God most when you are happy' 'find out what you're gonna be happy with and follow that and you will succeed very well'
loved the last one it touched my soul
Thank you for this! I want to learn this kind of stuff, but I am still 11. If I learn to do medical stuff, I will have a nice way to save people. I want to be an actor. I think I am good at it, I want to learn more about it. I love it. Thank you!
Rolo Bolo
Hes an atheist
The last guy was awesome! Dr. Ayaram!!!!
All the doctors are out of shape. Only me noticed this?
When you're busy looking after someone else health 24/7, its kinda hard to stay in shape. But you wouldn't know about that.
So that means you need to eat more calories? Your argument is weak
"Only me noticed this" I am under the impression you lack the basic skills required to enter into a pre-med program, let alone a graduate program.
gurrll plzzhoney Thanks for sharing that with us.
***** Respect
"I always followed my heart in medical school," "Now I'm a cardiologist" lol
Thank You Doctor's! This was very helpful. To the last Doctor who spoke, I needed to hear that!!!!!
Choosing medical field is a path which is not easy to go through, since i got into a medical college my life has changed i always worry about not studying enough and that make my life less happy ,but in the end i know this path will lead to the doors of happiness ,everything has its price
Absolutely agree with this. Kudos to your medical journey. I start mine next Saturday. I would like to be a PA.
Looking back, i suggest while you're in your 1st year...List down why you want to be a doctor. Then later when you're struggling or feeling down, look back on it, and don't let yourself down, don't let the person who brought you there down..yourself.
Thank you so much for this video! I especially took note of Dr. Srimant Ayaram's advice at the end of the video. I've started my undergrad work as a non-traditional student, and headed and happy to head, to medical school and become a doctor. There are many odds against me, but I'm willing to push through them and pursue this path ("to glorify God by being happy").
Hello, I am a first-stage medical student. Can you give me some advice on how to properly study and control subjects and invest time? I am still in the first phase, I am in a state of dispersion
@@jackkline2178 Choose a great accountability partner who will keep you accountable, Jack. Sometimes after you've done Uworld Qbanks, rotated actively with patients and gained control over time management- someone can confirm it.
thank u docs!!!...im out of the dilemma... now without any doubts i can follow my dream of becoming a doctor.....
You wanna be a Doctor? Well, you must learn a lot. Then when you're a Dr you must also learn how to scam OHIP! If you wanna be a Canada Doctor.
not everyone is doing scam!!
GREESHMA ABRAHAM
Not all that's true, but most do. Here's how it works. You go to a walk in Dr you have more then problem wrong with you. They only want to hear the one and tell you to come back later for the rest. Why? They bill OHIP for the visit.
Okk...u dont go to a Dr...heal self...
GREESHMA ABRAHAM
i try not to. all they do is cheat the system and nobody cares..
Great Advises, this is my first year in medical school and I believe this is very helpful
Kimberly Estevez well did you graduate yet?
As a med student I guess I will regret more than I do now when I come at their age for choosing medical school and being a doctor for lifetime. Although I know this fact I don't have the power and determination and support to quit med school.
If this is not what you want to do, dont do it.
What you do is simply an extension of your identity. Build a strong sense of identity and live a full life. Medicine is simply a platform to show how well you've treated yourself.
Amazing. Loved it. The irony in the first speaker's line "follow your heart....".Cardiology". Lol
Three are of Indian origin 😄
i did notice that they are all out of shape, and as a prospective medical school student who worked really hard to get in shape I am concerned...
Arthur Yagami I met a 7th year residency neurosurgeon who was in great shap, he did an 1 hour of martial arts every morning.
yes, "a", one, singular. not many
Arthur Yagami don't be, just keep working out and eat healthy
Here's my advice as a medical student to pre-meds: Go into finance instead.
Although agnostic myself, I can see how it could be a good thing to have doctors who are religious/spiritual. There are inevitably going to be many patients who are religious as well, and these doctors can do a better job of treating these patients because they can empathize with them.
Empathizing is an over used word.
Doctors need to make cold medical decisions that no about of friendship or empathizing can make .
***** So what you are saying, correct me if I'm wrong. Religious/spiritual doctors are better at empathizing with patients? You got some stuff to prove here mate.
Religious/Spiritual doctors are better at empathizing with religious/spiritual patients in that context. Am I wrong?
Through the entire video I was just like okay, thats important and when the last docgor was talking I was like ... with my eyes wide open although I knew that already. Thanks Doc.;)
Everything resonated very well with me. Thank you for taking the time out of your schedules to help out the younger generation.
My heart can't choose between medicine or basketball.
+dan liu For me its hockey or medicine, and I am going for medicine. More stable and saving lives is somthing so sacred and respected.
me too my teachers and classmates said that i should use my intelligence to contribute to the society and help people.
+dan liu lol trust me buddy if you are questioning basketball or medicine you probably will never have a career in basketball so if you are smart kid whose naturally gifted choose medicine
i'm 6ft 5, 14 years of age.In addition i am Chinese so having a career in the CBA is much easier for me than other foreigners. And medicine doesn't have to be for naturally gifted kids.
I'm curious to know what was Dan's final decision. 🤔
Thank you great doctors! You all have wisdom, and that wisdom which you all share really inspire me to glorify God in helping my neighbors.
I think most of the panel members have forgotten what med school was like, particularly when they say they should "relaxed more", had more balance in their life etc. during their studies. There is no TIME for a balanced life!
well said...but depression and self-doubt are VERY common in med school and never addressed. these kids are spending a quarter million dollars yet there is no mental health service professional on hand to provide help in a private manner. the average 22 or 25 or so year old has no idea of what life is like. these kids will NOT speak to their professors about their worries due to being looked at as a coward or weakling. they need professional help where they won't be called out.
I think it's interesting to find different doctors giving different advice, especially in different systems.
Notice there was no surgeon on this panel? he's too busy in the OR to be coming to panels
I'm writing this with good intent: Dr. Manisha Sha... and many other MDs.. When you take care of others, you don't need to take care of yourself ? We need to be good to ourselves too you know.. :) Women give what they need themselves most.
Take good care
Last Dr. Sounded like my uncle :)
i found out what makes me happy and fulfilled even i am poor... ~medical practitioners in integrated medicine~
What if you lost motivation to study you’re very far from home your family isn’t near you you’re sick and tired what the hell can you do to keep going without breaking down everyday
Well maybe think about the future and try to cope with your studies.
Been there and I say fight like crazy because life's responsibility requires your participation.
Thx doctors ... what u said helped me.. and special thanks for u dr. Shirmant Ayaram :)
Thank you last comment touched me .
thanks doctors for your advice..really appreciate it.
All these people were doctors while the last guy was a visionary. HUGE difference. I admire them all however I respect the last doctor.
Thank you doctors!!!..u have given me hope to move on
Med school is stressful and whoever tells you otherwise they are lying. I am not saying this because I want to scare you but to tell you the reality that was unclear for me until I was in it.
The real secret is to have balance and know your priorities. You can study and still have fun but your free times have to be shorter once you go for med school and don’t worry when you forget things because you will not become doctor after finishing your first year or your basic science years. At med school you are just a student not a doctor so don’t worry about your mistakes because being at the college is your chance to learn from your mistakes before hurting others.
Cliche after cliche for 4 full minutes. I watched the entire thing on 2x just hoping for 1 original thought that you couldn't find on a pre-made Hallmark card. Nope.
Definitely have a well rounded schedule is so much better. I'm exhausted from clinicals but I still go out to extra curricular activities 2 nights a week. I'm happier that I've even been in med. Straight A's are not worth the misery. I don't care that I'm not gonna be chief resident at Mass Gen or Harvard.... who would want to be anyway?
She said she followed her heart and became a cardiologist! So if I followed my mouth, can I become a mouthologist?😎
good profession with stable income..beyond that I wouldve done something else
Always really on your own intuition and feelings:-)
Respected sir,
Sir I am a medical student in India aiming to become doctor abroad. I want to enquire how difficult is it to clear mcat for Indian students bcoz I m getting medical college in India but as I want to settle abroad I want to know more about mcat and it's clearance for Indian students
Try the ecfmg site and you should see if your medical school makes that list
I always follow my heart and feeling ( in love with my speciality)
Question for all you in med school, are all of you doing it because you actually love the subject or are some of you doing it just for the money.
One way or the other, we end up spending so much money and have to learn all the subjects so to answer your question- if we started med school, what other option is there? tell us
Advice: when people say "it's gets easier..." They're lying. Pick something besides medicine and you'll have a much less stressful life and much more time to enjoy it.
Wow! 3 out of those 6 doctors happen to be Indians.
I really like the last line. Study yourself. You glorify God most when you're happy, so find out what you're gonna be happiest and follow that. And you're gonna succeed very well. :))
Hi Good evening,Above 10 pages, I like To Increase, It, Good evening, Plz Help me, and I like To Spireal, Binding, And Am In Q.Munwaruddin House, Am CD.Vazir
Well said! As a former medical student, this is the best advice ever...
Dr. Shah.....first and foremost I always followed the money . Which is way I became a Cardiologist ! And now ! I have an oversized home ! !
Glorify God is sure and awesome advice to any med students, including my daughter who is 3rd year BS/MD Program!
no matter what happen in between you have to arrive!
All well done! The best nuggets of advice I received when I was studying in Medical School were from older physicians in the twilight of their careers. Often as simple as the essence of patient care was caring for the patient!
God willing, I begin studying pre-med at CCU this fall, and I want to go on to be a surgeon! This video has been great and motivating, reminds me of knowing that the people you help, and the God you glorify, are worth being a doctor. Listening to what these doctors had to say has really opened my eyes, and refreshed m dream! More than anything, amen to Glorifying God, that's what it's all about! Thank you all and keep doing what yo do, God bless you! For Jesus and through Jesus, amen and amen!

Rhonda Lynn Pickett
When she says "I always followed my heart" she meant she has followed her feelings which are basically into someone's brian....jokes following heart/cardiologist have no sense
I thought they were unhelpful in my current dilemma of pursuing Medical masters/Phd vs Graduate medicine
I have a bad case of meth mouth. What would you guys suggest I do to help cure it?
Great advice!
Thank you baby ➕positive people like you is what I need in my life . Ily a lot
the last speaker was amazing! "You glorify God most when you're happy"
I need a mentor....starting medical schl
Is it me or the guy at the end makes you tear up a bit? Aha
Somebody drunk coffee faster ;)
I am a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major and I NEEDED this today❤️❤️
Enjoyed listening Prof Lucky Jain.Excellent lecture with extremely useful information
Sir I can't find the body I am so sorry its in the fur ehst fo we do now??
That last doctor made my heart melt
All of them are too clear in their head. Defies my idea of doctors' perspective on life. Loved them all.
How annoying, you have no idea what the circumstances are for these people, so why judge? They can probably have some sort of injury or metabolic disorder which caused them to gain weight. As a medical student myself, I learnt that you should not judge someone because of their weight, sexuality or religious beliefs but try to understand and meet them halfway. Being a good physician is learning to understand someone and work with them rather than pass judgement.
Any from Rome not expats male only not psychos do this again
this is the worst advice ever.... in order to survive in this field there is no balance.... there is only sacrifice... that is why we are here doing what we do... otherwise we would have went to dental school.
what crap.. this is not advice.. glorified "idealist".. they have forgotten what is was like when you are studying and trying to make it through!
The final comment..!
Very well said ~
They all look so healthy! Lol
I love the last guy , humble !!
Last doctor was just amazing!
I don't know what an ACT is, but like that last doctor stated. You find what you love and you do it. That's all. Don't ask yourself can I do it? Maybe I'm not qualified. Your doubts do nothing but hold you back from the things you want most.
This would explain why all the (male) attending doctors keep encouraging me to date around.
Is that ACT or MCAT? I think the average MCAT score for admissions is 24, so go for it. Noone is assured admission regardless of scores or grades. You will definitely not get in if you do not apply.
hmmm.. the worst thing is when you think you know what you're gonna be happy in, but once you've achieved that "success" you realise that you werent really happy.
last guy was great!
last one :')
i am in medical school right now is there any advice anyone good or bad could give to me in order to be successful thanks
Are these doctors stress?? they're kind of....... puffy
would love to hear what a surgeon has to say
Last doctor was amazing!
