  • Elden "Mark" Marquardt was born in Illinois. Marquardt enlisted to join the Army Air Corps in 1943. He started his training in Miami with basic training. Then he was sent to the University of Minnesota as part of a college training detachment. After taking classification tests in Santa Ana, it was determined that he would be a navigator. He was then sent to Texas for navigation training. After completing his training, he reported to Drew Field to be assigned to a crew. He was put on crew #82, 571st squadron, 390th Bomb Group as the navigator. After completing their phase training, they were assigned to the air base at Framlingham, England. Marquardt completed 35 combat missions. During his interview, Marquardt provides an excellent description about a German flak attack in which they were saved by an American P47 that went down to ground level and strafed the German flak gunners. He also crashed landed in France after running out of gas. There is also some nice commentary about the 390th Group Leader - Colonel Moller.

    He looks great for 82 years of age. I guess if 35 trips won't kill ya then you have done quite well.

      Luna - Mark was one of the veterans we got to know and had an ongoing relationship with. He lived in the mountains near Yosemite National Park. He loved his greenhouse where he grew his heirloom tomatoes. We would stop in to see him when we were on our way to the park. We would have a wonderful lunch with Mark and his wife - he wouldn't let you pay the bill. I'm a lawyer and he was a retired lawyer - so we had lots to talk about. He was generous and razor smart and had a great sense of humor. He was active right up until the end. One night he went to bed and died peacefully in his sleep. He was in his nineties. It was an honor to be his friend. As always Luna, thanks for watching and thanks for your comments.

      I really appreciate your comment. Mark wasn't just a veteran we interviewed, he was a friend. He lived in Groveland, California and we would stop in and see him on our way to Yosemite. He was generous and kind and very smart (a career military attorney). He passed on peacefully in his sleep a few years ago. I still miss being able to stop in and talk. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching.

    I am attempting to watch all of these wonderful interviews. It reminds me of some of my conversations I had as a teenager with a few of the WW2 vets from my hometown in Michigan. I am so impressed with each Raymond McFalone interviews that I would love to watch an interview of Raymond McFalone. For the first time ever I just subscribed.

    After watching maybe three dozen of these interviews over the past weeks, I just now realized the importance of the music. What is it?

    • @raymondmcfalone26
      @raymondmcfalone26  2 года назад +4

      Instead of using the cliche drums/trumpet military beat, I opted for different music. Here's the titles to the 2 pieces: Shenandoah
      Eric Tingstad, Nancy Rumbel
      Carnation Lily Lily Rose
      David Arkenstone, Andrew White

    Elden Marquardt became an attorney after the war. These days everybody needs to have a law degree just to keep their personal Freedom. 🧐✍🦅
