I was once peeling the skin of some Yams. The fluid touched my skin and my palms itched for upto 20 minutes. Worst experience ever
I want to cut my leg off and have been thinking about it for more than 7 years. I have chronic painful pain on my leg and doctors don't help at all. I've caused myself to get blisters because the pain so bad that I massage it so hard. I can nights without sleep because of the pain. Meds don't do anything about it.

Can't stop scratching until it's bleed
Itching can be a total nightmare and drive you to distraction. A chronic itch can be all consuming and even injury from all scratching is not a deterrent. At least it wasn't for me. It causes real despair.

As someone who has eczema, what the actor portrays is 100% accurate. I would often scratch until I bled all over my body. I have scars everywhere because of it. Thankfully I finally found a solution, by using prescription strength steroid cream. My skin looks amazing now!! But people do experience this itching and it is the absolute worst.
I used to have it and it was severe. My solution was just to cut my hair. Thankfully, it was just something I went through during puberty. By the time I got in high school, it stopped. But I still kept my hair low as I kinda got used to having my hair cut. Just as a precaution.

Man, I so relate to this woman. I have recently been diagnosed with a severe version of eczema. The itch was absolutely insane. I literally looked like a monster had been just chewing on my skin, all over my body. The worst was going to sleep. I could control my scratching while awake but not when I was asleep. No one can understand (unless they experience it) what it feels like to wake up to the sting of open wounds and blood covering your body and sheets 😭 Or when your skin is constantly oozing fluid so you feel both cold and hot at the same time, and it literally causes your clothes to stick to the open wound so bad that you have to peel it off of your skin. Or even when you feel and see your skin falling off of you in flakes, the horror. My mind was so tormented through this that I tried to commit suicide a few times, but I made it through. My skin looks so much better after a number of steroid treatments and a diet change. To anyone going through it, my heart goes out to you. You are still beautiful, and I love and stand with you.
My daughter suffered as a toddler with severe eczema and for 3 years of all our lives we never slept, I remember one night she screamed so much and had dug into the crease of her elbow until you could see bone. Dr's answers were always give her a bath and steroid cream. we found out on holiday one year the sun helped her so much and a few years later we moved permanently to a very hot climate and Eczema is a thing of the past.
Happened to me one night because I scratched my neck while asleep and I bled all over my sheet.. woke up with blood all over my body and freaked out because it was still squirting everywhere ☠️
Sending love to you and glad you are still here with us all ❤️ I have eczema too. Mine used to be very severe like yours. I once had my whole hand blistered it was unbearable. Many nights I would wake up with blood caked under my nails and the fabrics of my pj's stuck to my skin. Mines more contained now, I get it on my wrists, hands and ears and sometimes even my armpits. Used to get it on my face and behind the knees too. One of the hardest times was when I worked in retail customers would always comment on my hands and it would get me down. One person even asked if I had been burnt. People who think we can just not scratch it don't understand if it was that simple we wouldn't be doing it.

I'm so glad you found relief, and changed your diet! Doctors treat eczema with steroids but itching comes from within. Meaning what we put into our bodies makes a difference.

For those in attendance who are under the age of 6: 1. an itch is a sensation. 2.Scratching is an action you take to alleviate the itch. 3. Itch is not a verb.

Phantom itching is so real!! I lost my eye two years ago and I *still* get the feeling periodically that I have an eyelash stuck in my eye. I have a bunch of other phantom feelings, too, and it is SO annoying!

Sadly no, believe me I tried! Thankfully it doesn't happen on a daily basis, but it can be very frustrating.
I do have weird, but really cool, flashes that happen, though! If I'm doing something and there is a loud sound nearby that I'm not expecting, I get a flash of white light up in the area!
Also, weirdly enough, if I don't "close my eye" I can't fall asleep at night.
My eyelids, along with 99% of the muscle and nerves, were removed, so there is literally nothing for me to close, but if that 1% of muscle isn't doing it's thing, it feels like I am staring into the darkness of my room.

I LOVE the fact that they keep presenting the docs with stuff they may have studied or heard about, but not encountered themselves. 99% of doctors see the mundane stuff. Having a show where ordinary (but caring) docs see stuff and say 'Huh...that's new. We're going to help...but that's new' is refreshing.
Exactly what we need. Doctors humanizing their patients and taking time to do what’s best for them instead of obvious or easy options. Loved the acting especially the patient.

I’ve seen cases like this when I worked in derm. We had a few patients we called “pickers”. They constantly pick at or itch their skin. I had a patient who has early onset dementia, scratch a hole in his head. It was so scary to look at.

I think trichotillomania is hereditary in our family. My dad and uncle has scalp problems and me, my aunt & cousin got into the habit of scratching patches and pulling out hair. Sometimes at night I'd wake up with hair in my hand or whilst scratching and pulling. Anyways, a few years ago I had a problem with hair growth and I was searching the internet for supplements to help hair growth cause in my mind topical shampoos and products won't work. In my mind I thought I had to "heal" my scalp from the inside. I came across a supplement called MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane). I tried that and my hair started to grow again. BUT what I was most surprised about was (I realized), that it took the "urge to scratch/pull" away. From then on I was a MSM fan. *MSM is actually used for joint pain but i somehow saw a comment that said a "side effect" was that it makes your hair grow. So it helps my hair grow, brought back my natural curls and took the urge to scratch/pull away. **Sorry for the long post.😊
Exactly! If we could just stop, we would! I have to keep my hair short to hide the patches or wear wigs. It’s honestly so awful.
as someone who once had scabies and an allergic reaction at the same time on ma leg for a while (didn’t call anyone’s attention to it similarly to her), scratching skin off till its a flesh wound is awful enough, i can’t imagine how bad it must’ve been to get a wound to the skull
the skin at the scalp is definitely thinner than other parts of your body so I can see that happening.
And to not have enough will power not to make it worse

Yup dealt with the same. Scabies followed by an allergic reaction on my left calf. It was itching so much I tore off layer after layer of skin.
Mirror therapy is so fascinating! It doesn't work for everyone who has phantom pains and itches, but the fact it can work at all is amazing

The lack of respect the neurosurgeon has for the psychiatrist is annoying, like y'all both work around the exact same organ
I don’t think he was disrespectful, I feel like they were discussing it and they had differing opinions in course of treatment. I find the neurosurgeon at times cynical and pragmatic even some dry humor but not disrespectful.
He was being logical not disrespectful, it’s was a mutual understanding of frustration.
It's not uncommon for some physicians to trash on the psychiatrist specialty

Trust me I’m in med school right now and have heard stories from other residents and physicians that surgeons but specifically neurosurgeons are incredibly egotistical. Not generalizing all of them but knowing that they are neurosurgeons really gives them an inflated ego lol
Wow, I just read about a case like this a week ago. A woman who, no matter what treatment was given, would keep scratching at this one spot in her head until eventually, she scratched through her skull. It was just too itchy.
No matter what treatment was given to her, even when she had a skin graft done using skin from another part of her body, she still felt itchy. The problem for her was that she could try to control and not scratch it while awake, but when she slept, she would keep scratching.
How does it itch if there is no skin?

I feel her pain! I had itching all over and I scratched to no avail. Doctors claimed I scratched so much that it looked like I had burns on me (lower back). I visited them so many times and diagnosed me under the sun. Anxiety, allergies, scurvy,etc. They eventually told me I was a medical mystery because nothing helped me. It eventually went away MONTHS later. It's terrible! Kudos to this woman's acting because it is spot on. 👏

Never EVER, start talking about a psychological symptom with, “it’s not real”
It IS real. The brain is sending the same signal it would if there actually was something else there. So of course the pain is real. Of course the itch is real. When you start with “it’s not real” they aren’t going to believe you about the psychological aspect, because they know it’s real, they can feel it. It’s also incredibly dismissive of anyone that struggles with psychologically induced symptoms. It’s not the same thing as imagining something. That’s why it can be so difficult to tell the difference in cause at times.
The brain is in fact misfiring, just not in the way they thought.
they know her history. the phantom itch theory was something her previous doctors didn't consider. they also didn't know for sure surgery is going to fix it, and that's riskier than itching on the wrong spot looking at a mirror.
While the cause of it may not be obvious, if the patient is experiencing a symptom, that symptom is real, period. The patient feels it, it causes distress and has real effects on well-being. The source of the symptom will dictate treatment in many cases (psychological problems may require psychiatric medications as opposed to other kinds of treatment). But you can't just make a symptom go away by saying it isn't "real".
@@gasun1274 the itch is still real though, doesn’t matter what the cause is. There is an itch. You can debate about the type of itch it is, but the only way for it to not be real would be if she’s straight up lying which would be odd since she dug through her skin scratching.
@@annataymond9529 in regards to medicine, real and what we perceive as real are 2 vastly different things. Most common example is when people imagine ants crawling on their skin during hallucinations and scratch at themselves till their skin gets damaged, but that doesn't make the ants real and someone still needs to tell the patient they do not have ants all over them, its a reasonable approach and the obvious starting point.
@@softhands3394 hallucinations aren’t the same thing. There aren’t real ants there. But she does really itch. The physical response is real, even when what you’re seeing is inaccurate. Bottom line is people are more likely to get defensive and less likely to consider what you’re saying when you tell them “it’s not real” that’s an extreme over simplification and not even entirely accurate. It’s actually a major reason so many people don’t get the correct help, is because they know they feel something real, and they’re being told it’s not, so they it’s super hard to trust people who phrased it that way.
I've been suffering with chronic itching and skin hyper sensitivity for the past 7 years, with doctors not listening to me and giving me things that don't work. I understand her pain.

really hate the way the neurosurgeon was talking to Dr charles. surgery isn't always the answer and psychology isn't a quack science.
He's a surgeon. For him, surgery is the answer he can give.
And real life psychology, while not quack, also isn't...super solid. It's one of the softer sciences that we really do not understand very well at all. In real life, there is no Doctor Charles to work miracles.

"Scratches", not "itches". Itching is passive - it's happening to her. Scratching is what she is doing to try to alleviate the itch.

Had a similar problem that landed me in the ER then psych ward for 3 days taking mild sedatives and nerve pain medication while also applying lidocaine cream to the area and let me tell you, the relief I felt after finally being given something for the very real very intense pain and itch, nothing can match that feeling. I’m half a year in recovery from the problem and I just hope I never have a similar itch/pain ever again, it was unbearable.

Tinnitus often works in the same way as this itch--doctors in the past have severed the entire auditory nerve to cure the ringing to no avail!
This is brutal. Tinnitus can come from 3 parts of the auditory systems. Cutting the hearing nerve should be an absolute last resort as well as it should be possible to prove that malfunction is there
I read a case where an old man got a song stuck in his head for something like 40 years. The song was 'Turkey in the Straw' and he described it as being played by an out of tune fiddle.
my grandfather went through that he went all the way to talking to a surgeon and he was like ill do it but here is the thing it may not stop the ringing but it will take your hearing for good. my grandfather passed on that surgery lived about 3 more years till he passed
As someone who has tinnitus i cant imagine something more terrifying than that. The only things that are helping me cope with tinnitus are the exterior noises that help me ignore it so the thought alone of cutting the only way to cope with it and spending the rest of your life hearing nothing but ringing sends shivers down my spine. Dear god.
@@hardwirecars I too have tinnitus,and if I'm alone in my room without any distracting noise(especially at night) it is a terrible thing. I'll have it till the end.😐
Dr. Ramachandran’s mirror box therapy! I wish this was better explained here, but I’m a neuroscientist and this is a great tool for those with similar disorders. Listening to Dr. Ramachandran talk about neurology is super insightful.

I have trichotillomania, it's a mental disorder where you can't resist the urge to pull out your hair. As for myself, I can't resist the urge to pull out my hair because I feel my scalp itch, and it's always been at those 3 points for the past 10 years. During the 7th year, it was my worst moment because I even pierced my scalp with acupuncture needles and even put a spoon that I warmed with fire into my scalp. but now it's much better, I don't have any bald spots anymore.
For anyone that's suffering with trichotillomania, just so you know that we definitely can fight them, love yourself, don't take up too much stress.. my best advice is to coloured your hair and you will understand how precious and beautiful your hair is ❤❤❤

My mom had cancer and one of the side effects of the chemotherapy was itching. No matter what you did, it won't go away. It was torture for her.

@@Woohchaiell oh well here's the thing. They prescribed hydrocortisone to her but I don't think that helped much, but theyll have to take everything that helps. The best thing to do is to wear loose clothing and sleep on a soft bed. To avoid any sort of pressure.

I have psoriasis too. On my scalp, back of my ears, neck and arms. It's horrible.
I'm not entirely sure if I have psoriasis, but I have a feeling I have it on my scalp.
Theres a certain spot of my scalp that started of dry and flaky, (I also think I have undiagnosed dermatophagia ((?))) and I would start to pick at it (sometimes unaware when doing so) and it got to the point it started scabbing and a weird clear liquid would come out of it sometimes. Now it won't go away
I use a steroid cream on it and it helps, but I accidentally missed a few days and it came back.
And omg its so itchy
I have psoriasis on my right leg and it flares up. Used to be my whole body but now it’s just my right leg. Super duper itchy and flaky and disgusting 😢 if I moisturize it, it’s fine for a few hours until it’s dry and flaky again

I have eczema so I completely understand what that itch is like. I had a doctor treat me like an idiot as if the itch was something small and he kept making assumptions about what I was doing. The itch is ten times worse than the pain which is really only a mild sting. No one seems to understand what a relief it is to be rid of an itch and how hard it is not to scratch. Not even my mother a nurse gets it. My foot looks like a 1st degree burn. But the sting is better than a constant itch.
When my eczema was really bad, it would be like that too, and hurt like a burn wound. I had started to wonder if that was were spontaneous combustion came from. And the doctors 🙄 always assumed you were doing things wrong instead of listening to you when you say whatever they had you on wasn't working. It took learning what my triggers are (allergens), completely changing how I shower and lotion up (exfoliating gloves and baby oil gel before pat/air drying) and Jamaican black castor oil with vitamin E. The castor oil pretty much got rid of it and quickly deals with any flair ups.
@@angelrae3584 thank you for that. Yeah the medicine they gave started working but I wasn't given enough and its still draining. I'll try the castor oil. Right now there is a break out on my face that's never happened before. Next chance I get I'm getting an allergy test.
I've had on&off severe eczema since I was a little girl. Now as a grown adult the steroid topical creams don't work. Maybe once every year or two I get an itch so bad I can't sleep. Every inch of my body itches. It's like little stings every second all over. Scratching doesn't even help. I cry to the doctor "just stop the itch". I feel trapped in my own skin to the point I want to literally die.

I have eczema too. Not sure if you all tried the allergy shot but it does help a little. Also I recently went vegan for awhile cause I know dairy and certain things we eat can trigger eczema too. also started using this vitamin d lotion on areas that break out and tea tree oil and aloe vera work for the itchiness and scaliness. I'm having the most problems out of the eczema on the sides my feet compared to rest of my body which goes away within a few days vs a few weeks or months for my feet. The itch on my feet isn't the problem it's the constant dry peeling it's really annoying! Praying everyone finds something to help relieve the symptoms for awhile 🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️❤️
This clip gives me flashbacks to when I had choleostasis during my pregnancy. The itch that came from the bile build-up was the worse thing I have ever experienced. I itched everywhere on every inch of skin. A constant itch like that with no relief is something I would not wish on my worst enemy. It was worse than the actual birth.

I think this is based on a true story - it was years ago that I read about it, but somebody did have a phantom itch bad enough to scratch a hole in their head.

I once had a very bad case of lice as a kid (super thick hair) and I scratched the back of my head into a disgusting enough bloody mess that I made the same school nurse who saw a bone sticking out of a kid's ankle like it was nothing run to the bathroom to throw up. I asked people to take pictures and show me what my head looked like and they always yelled something like, "H*ll no! You DO NOT want to see that." at me. I will never be okay with that experience.
I was a support worker in a school with young adults with learning difficulties. There was one girl who had such a hellacious case of head lice that when we were in a cooking class, I saw some of the lice dropping from her hair into the bowl of cake batter she was making. Her teacher threw me under the bus by asking me to give her a haircut to help make it easier to treat the lice. Her hair had started falling out because the lice were cutting off the oxygen supply to the hair follicles. She went from having long hair to a pixie cut and that was because so much of her hair had broken off or fallen out. Her parents yelled at me for cutting her hair and I'd had enough and simply told them, "your daughter has head lice and you need to do a deep clean of your home or they will come back."
Not the result of an itch but I once dermitiollomania-ed very painful carbunkle on the back of my head, in a spot where I had a reoccurring but never serious cyst, and it got similar reactions from my mom and brother.
The cyst never came back after that at least.
About 2 years ago I had a pimple in my ear, like right outside the ear canal, it hurt when I wore earbuds but I couldn’t see it or get a good enough angle to pop it so I let it be for a few months to see if it would go away on its own but it didn’t, so my mom ended up having to pop it for me and after she did pop it she was shocked at the mess, minus everything that’s inside a regular pimple there was a lot of blood due to the odd location, it took her a good 2 minutes to finally get it all off and stop it, but afterwards I had to clean out the inside of my ear to since some got in but luckily I was quick and didn’t get an infection or anything, but from what I heard her saying it was pretty gross lol

@@tgbluewolf - Because her parents had their own issues and probably some learning difficulties themselves. They simply didn't notice. There are a lot of people like that and we can't blame them for having struggles, as we all do. I've seen the girl around long after I left the school. She's doing much better now.

eczema (although this isnt her case but yeah) took over my life for a while. As a child I would scratch until I bled. The burning never stopped. doctor after doctor, blood work after blood work, trips hours away to professionals, etc.....smdh. SO glad that part of my life is over 💯
I had the exact same problem. Thanksfully, when I was diagnosed with PCOS it went away. Turns out it was a hormonal problem. Crazy isn't it.
I had one really bad eczema episode when I was 8 where I scratched my forearms bloody. The eczema got better but I still have the scars.

I feel that. Only thing that fixed my allergies was getting carina organic unscented shampoo and conditioner. Plus getting organic unbleached cotton sheets. Plus washing all my bedding/clothing in unscented detergent or baking soda/vinegar. I did a lot to avoid scalp eczema. It does cole back occasionally. Only when I am travelling and I have to sleep on unfamiliar bedding. Then I cry that I don’t have my topical scalp meds.

I had my right foot amputated in September 2019 & as weird as it sounds, I still get the urge to grab where my right foot should be, as that’s where I actually feel it happening. Unlike others, I can’t even use mirror therapy to help the pain due to my Aspergers Syndrome, as the way my brain is wired means I can’t fall for that kind of “trick” (& don’t think we haven’t at least tried). Luckily I’m a “pain veteran”, so I can handle it. Besides, it sometimes gives me & my fam a chuckle when it’s a tickling sensation; last time it happened, I had a fit of tearful giggles & even got my big sis laughing when I begged her to “chase away my phantom tickler”! 😂
That might give me insight into why some of the things I’ve tried for my post herpetic neuralgia have not worked. I’m also an Asperger’s
I'm also an amputee who never actually tried mirror therapy (it was optional to get the amputation done so wasn't offered mirror therapy) but I find personally if I have phantom sensations in the lower limb, pressing on the tip of the stump and rubbing around the nerve that it feels like it's coming from helps dull the sensations at the very least, if not get rid of them.
Also gives you an excuse to massage the whole stump with some moisturier so the skin doesn't go dry and flaky :D
Been a registered nurse for 34 years you’re having with a cough phantom pain yet remember the nerves are still going down to where ever the amputation occurred but your brain is saying that it’s still there and I don’t think anything will cure that the time.

I have autism which has given me hyposensitivity to pain. The amount of times that I've scratched off a layer of skin because of an itch is embarrassing to admit.
I scratch around my nails mainly my thumb until they bleed
I've scratched until I have bruises or scabs because I just can't stop itching and I didn't notice the pain

I had a reaction like this earlier this year! I had a cold or possibly Covid (never got tested, just quarantined at home). Well, after I got over it, I started having this terrible itching all up and down my legs. I started bleeding at from scratching. I started making small cuts with a knife just to get relief. I finally called my allergist and got an appointment. My allergist took a look and told me that the cold/Covid had made it so allergy receptors in my legs were confused and constantly thinking I was having an allergic reaction. She prescribed some pills and within a week, I felt so much relief. The itch stopped. Apparently, this can happen anytime you get sick and your body is recovering.
My coworker has this, she developed hives a week after she got covid. She has to take an antihistamine every day to help with the itching/random hives that pop up now and then

i had it and its real its a side effect after getting covid i got a rash all on my thighs i had to take benadryl to get it to stop
When I got Covid, one of the symptoms I experienced was my skin feeling a lot more sensitive. Just wearing a shirt and pants was suddenly really uncomfortable, all day. Of course, we didn't know I had Covid yet, but that's not a usual symptom.
This happened to my daughter, when she was overdosed with penicillin. We finally found a doctor that prescribed a topical medication that actually worked.

As much as this is make-believe, it teaches me a lot about myself than I think. The mind is an extremely powerful component. Succumbing to it's perceptions might lead to destruction of us and our environment. This was good work.
Well it's not make believe. It's rare but there have been cases with people with severe eczema and psoriasis that have scratched into their skull or practically skinned their arms and legs by scratching non stop.

this is honestly how it feels to have eczema. obviously not as bad to scratching a hole, but that's bc we learn to control it. i have eczema, and no matter what I do, the itching never stops. I was born with eczema so nothing can treat it unlike how most ppl only have it during specific seasons. when I was younger I used to take rulers, containers, just anything with a semi-sharp corner and scratch with it and was left with long scratches on my arms legs back everywhere, it went to the point where my teachers thought I was self harming. luckily I learnt to control it and even thought the itch is still bad sometimes I know how to control myself and not scratch it and just let the itch go away
