Show of hands: who played the original Myst (the one on CD)? Doesn't matter if you didn't play it at release -- although, definitely shoutout if you were there at the beginning!
Was anyone else scared of this game when you were a kid? Lol I've always loved the Myst games but I played them for the first time when I was in elementary school and thought they were so creepy, yet I couldn't get enough of them. I remember having this irrational fear that Sirrus knew I wasn't planning to free him and kept thinking he would somehow show up in one of the ages and trap me there. I would click to check behind me periodically while playing, and I always jumped at the sounds since the game was mostly silent and I was so on edge. My parents would look at what I was doing and have no idea why I seemed so spooked. I shared a bunk bed with my older sister and whenever we heard weird sounds at night, she would mess with me and tell me it was Sirrus because she knew I was afraid of him xD By the end of the game, I found both him and Achenar absolutely terrifying. I backed away from my computer in fear when I attempted to free Achenar lol And don't even get me started on Gehn! Riven scared me even more. Ohh the memories haha
Haha, yes! I was about 10 years old when I played this game in my parents dark basement. When the blue guy in the book started asking for help, I turned the game off and just went back upstairs. I decided to play during the daytime :D
This was back in the day when games were not meant for kids - though we certainly played them. The Nintendo was the main kid friendly platform. Everything else was ostensibly for 18+.
No, sorry. Unlike Riven (Sequel) there were NEVER any actual threats. Well, not in "Riven" Either. (No spoilers). No, this game has NO threats whatsoever, it's about following clues and solving puzzles.
Yes! I was too young to really solve the puzzles but the static with Sirrus and Achenar in the books, plus the desertedness of the island with the whistling wind, made it so creepy. This game left its mark in my brain and compelled me to seek it out in adulthood to actually play.
I'm 71 and I remember fondly being totally amazed, stupefied, and stumped by this game when I got it in 1994. I didn't buy this version; I can't play This version on my computer but I can watch in 1080p on RUclips.. Thank you for posting this and please go on. I like that you are "pretending" to go thru blind. So far my only disappointment with the game (not you) is that the Miller Bros. images and voices have been replaced with renderings. Please carry thru to the end.
Well, thank you! It is strange to play this game while knowing the ultimate conclusion of the story, but I'm finding that I like remembering the journey on the way to the end, too (and it's nice that I can't remember the puzzles at all). In some way, it's like my character is back on the island and struggling to remember what happened before; not only is that true in real life, but it also lends an interesting new dimension to my experience of the game (as strange as that may sound).
There is actually an option to include the original voices and video clips from the original game now. Sp that's awesome. Only thing they need to add is the Age that they added in realMyst.
@@AfterworkGaming there is no one even remotely close to your style and setup so it's a no brainer if I want that level of content patience is a must lol. Hope all is well in your world and glad you are back!
Really glad you made this playthrough. I was enamored with this game as a kid and being able to see it in depth with free roam and (more importantly) with respectful commentary is a treasure. Thank you so much.
Wow im almost 41 next month and i used to have this game on PS1 when it came out and i loved it, i did'nt know it was realesed again. There was another game like that with puzzles and hope they make a remake, lets see who remembers this one, it was called ( D ) amazing game too.

I’m watching this for academic purposes. I’m writing a speech about whether or not video games cause violence. There was a study conducted by Craig Andersen where participants played a violent game, Wolfenstein 3D, and a non violent game, this. Hopeful this will help me understand the game better. Also I get to distract myself as I write it. It’s also due tomorrow and I’ve already procrastinated a lot.
So glad you’re back, and excited for this playthrough. I’ve long enjoyed playing video games with my brothers (especially this genre) but it doesn’t always work out to do that together. This is a way for me to get that nostalgia and I really appreciate your approach and demeanor, you’re a great companion/guide through these games. I don’t have the patience to struggle through these alone without my brothers, so it is great to follow along with you in my own time. Found your channel through your Quern play through after my brother and I completed it. I still watched your whole playthrough because I enjoyed it so much. Long-winded way of saying I have been enjoying your videos for some time now and certainly missed you while you were on hiatus.
My dad bought this game when it first came out for our new PC. The thing was, was that he bought it for a rainy day, so it sat on the top shelf of my parent's dresser for I don't know how long. When he finally let us open the box and play, it was such a magical experience. I remember loving the desolation and freedom to go at my own pace and wondering where each puzzle would lead. I had a notebook with ally errors and notes lol After Must I played Riven once, but it was Exile that really brought me back. That was phenomenal.

I'm generally not a fan of listening to people talking hours on end, but you are very entertaining and funny! So thank you for that, also you did a very good job on this playthrough. I love the fact that you take your time which to me makes it more fun, and not just running through the whole game. Love the game, great fun! Thank you !

Coito, ergo sum! It's a game worth getting back into if you want to play along -- and the new remaster has very slick graphics, so a perfect way to fall into the Myst series (though going to the original Riven after this could be a bit jarring).
Who would think that 30 years later a dream would be realised, the exceptional Unreal engine would bring the magical world of the original Myst to pure 3D reality. From the inspired Hypercard language which in itself was incredible, the ability to explore Myst in physical reality is certainly wonderous.
Thank you for sharing this playthrough. I've loved all the Myst games. I'm unable to play right now, but it brings back memories of watching my dad play them.
Yup, played this and the sequels religiously back then. I still think it's one of the most immersive games ever, and the whole "where, why, when and who am I"? premise is pure genius. The original score and sound design still holds up. Thanks for sharing this! 👍🏼😊
Wow this game looks fantastic now! I still remember playing it when I was 15 all those decades ago! Windows 3.1 would crash regularly midgame on my dad's AST company laptop. I had to use the docking station as there was no cd rom in the actual laptop.
Appreciate the video! I just saw this was released and immediately downloaded it. I haven't been this excited for a game in a long time. Hopefully I remember what the heck I'm doing...

I remember this game very well playing it when I was a kid with my dad took me ages to figure out the safe and when I did open it was a box of matches 😂
I'll likely give it a shot, as well. This version also runs perfectly well on PC (i.e., not in VR), but I'm curious how some of the more fiddly puzzles will work without the precision of a mouse.
Played the original. Played all the sequels. Bought URU when it came out. Kickstarted Obduction. Also, I watched your entire blind LP of Obduction just recently. Glad I subbed, this is going to be fun.
THANKS so much for the info on where to find the key to each place by looking in the tower. I needed a little help getting INTO channelwood, but I got through it and into the spaceship world all on my own!
So, there is a face on the carpet on Atrus' room. This face belongs to one of the other developers of the original game. He now lives nearby here in Maine and has his own development studio! I've gone by to visit their offices and met him. It was a fun bit of connecting over this game.
Remade with the Obduction Engine! As someone who grew up with practically every previous version of this game, I gotta say that Atrus animation, while good from a technical standpoint, looks creepy as farce. Seriously looking forward to this.😁 edit: wondering if Rime will be included?...
Yeah, I don't know about Rime -- I've avoided reviews/discussions about this game, just so I can be surprised by the updates. I'm still torn on the animated faces, but also realize that the original FMVs probably wouldn't have upscaled very well.
This version has a "random" setting just for such an occasion -- you can play the game with randomized solutions. It doesn't fix everything (you'll still remember all the steps), but it will at least require you to go through the game in order to finish it.
Played the original and was so frustrated and quit to early. It’s one of those games that has been on my mind for 30years. I’m looking forward to completing it with you!!
Glad to see you back walking is thru one of the best puzzle games of the early 90s. I enjoyed your other vids and am sure to love this one. I really hope they remake Riven next. What hardware are you sporting here?
It's a less previous-gen, but: i9 @ 3.60 GHz 32GB RAM RTX 2080 Ti It gets the job done on almost any game, so I have no reason to upgrade at the moment.
I have read some comments below. I found "Myst" back when the Internet was dial-up. "Screech, screech, ETC". Now it's 2023. This game is wholeheartedly solid to teach deductibe reasoning and logic. I an going to BUY the updated version again, even though its been 30 years.
came here to see what the remake looks like. It's gorgeous! Not sure how I feel about Atrus being a CGI dude though... Anyways, I may have to get this myself.
Turn othe century, I played on (windows 98 version) PC Total novelist at game play, very very bad at figuring out the puzzles...the whole tower as a key, thing But so satisfying the first time fighting-out-paper-bag of transporting in a new world!
My memory was that I quit it. I didn’t get a few things solved but never finished the game. Now 3 decades later, 2022, I installed Myst (1993) and enjoying the puzzles. Lol.
I luv the LucasArts games back then for the exploration and interaction, but not when the puzzles got annoying to solve. So you see why I never bought Myst since it was all about puzzles, haha. I hope we get more old school games like Thimbleweed Park again.
I think the puzzles in Myst range from straightforward to slightly obscure, but it never reaches the heights of the old LucasArts games where some of the solutions are pretty obtuse/out of left field.
This is the only game I ever played. I got pretty far. I think I got stuck in the ship if I remember correctly. I had the wife and kids and a job so I eventually gave up and concentrated on what mattered most. Now that I am retired I would play again but now I have Linux OS and don't know if you can even get a version for it.
I don't know if ANY of this works (since I don't have Linux), but here's a recent reddit thread about just that question: www.reddit.com/r/myst/comments/n3jra6/running_myst_games_on_linux_some_tips_and_quirks/
seeing you in the library missing something so critical made me cringe so hard lol and I was there at the beginning when I was in elementary school, my dad and I played it, still have some of our original notes on paper!
I couldn't get into any of the newer versions but that's nothing to do with their quality. I simply played faaaar too many hours in the school library back in 94.
Is that closing theme by Terry S. Taylor? Has a very Neverhoody vibe. I don't care for what they did with the characters. The staticky video was always part of the charm for me, like watching a Bakshi cartoon.
I've just started this Myst version, but so far my opinion is that the 3D animation and voice acting in the blue/red books are sooo bad compared to earlier versions.
I'm going to give the animated faces a little more time, but it would have been great to see the live-action versions, certainly. That said, I'm sure the old files are too small to properly render on today's larger monitors -- I know they were in realMyst, but still.
@@AfterworkGaming I reaf somewhere a comment that talked about video being too flat when using VR, could be the case? The voice acting of the brothers could surely have been better tho.

In the app version you need to light the pilot light with a match. No matter how hard I try I can’t . Suggestion?
I have read some comments below. I found "Myst" back when the Internet was dial-up. "Screech, screech, ETC". Now it's 2023. This game is wholeheartedly solid to teach deductibe reasoning and logic. I an going to BUY the updated version again, even though its been 30 years.
came here to see what the remake looks like. It's gorgeous! Not sure how I feel about Atrus being a CGI dude though... Anyways, I may have to get this myself.
I really want to play the randomizer version! But I don't really know how to get it.
I don't have sprint option, spacebar for photo album etc on this game for laptop. Why?
I used to love this game as a kid. It was so amazing. You really should play through the other games Raven and exile and revelation
It's not the first 3D version of this. There was RealMyst from about 15-20 years ago.
ugh, looks so good
Turn othe century, I played on (windows 98 version) PC
Total novelist at game play, very very bad at figuring out the puzzles...the whole tower as a key, thing
But so satisfying the first time fighting-out-paper-bag of transporting in a new world!
My memory was that I quit it. I didn’t get a few things solved but never finished the game. Now 3 decades later, 2022, I installed Myst (1993) and enjoying the puzzles. Lol.
this version is amazing in vr!
Now I really fell like total idiot. Got totaly confused and lost at start and tottaly missed message on stone for levers...
It's hard to miss, especially in this version where the graphics are more lush. Well, now that you found it; time to start the adventure!
Oh. Oh no. I don’t like they replaced the real people that were in the original with animation
There's 5 books 2 nd shelf to the right it has the code for brick room door
Yep, I am an original Myst player....number two on my list of my fav games (Half Life is first).
That's great; welcome aboard!
@@AfterworkGaming I built a PONG game in 1977, so I guess I'm what you would call OG (Old Gamer).
All the more reason to have you along for the ride, sir!
seeing you in the library missing something so critical made me cringe so hard lol and I was there at the beginning when I was in elementary school, my dad and I played it, still have some of our original notes on paper!
We had a Windows 98 PC and playing this game for the first time.
Nice!
Is it on ps4 vr?
Someone else can feel free to correct me, but I think right now (August 31, 2021) the only console version is for Xbox.
Oh man...Bakshi...that takes me back!
where can i buy this
I was so disappointed that they didn't include the bonus age of Rime in this version. Cyan giveth and Cyan taketh away. :(
what the heck, how did they turn this into an actual 3d world you can navigate?!! and not just photos !
Thumb down to the jumping camera
I still have the original disk. Somewhere.
Help plz still don’t know what to do
It seems claustrophobic people find it difficult to play MYST.
It’s exactly the same voice acting as the original game…
@@amy_grace ok, its the pink haze of old memories then. I remembered it as much better 😁
I played it as a kid and got stuck in the early stages. Not a good return on my Dad's investment.
