Cicada Molts in Epic Time Lapse

  • This time lapse video of a cicada molting took about two hours to record. It had just come out of the ground and climbed up the branch of a small bush to molt, or shed its exoskeleton. My favorite parts are when the eyes appear and when the wings unroll, so don't miss that. Special thanks to my dog for letting me know cicadas were coming out of the ground by bringing one, unharmed, into the house. I barely had enough time to get set up to record before the magic started happening. This was recorded on June 27th in Memphis, Tennessee.
A photo of the moment this cicada breaks free is available on canvas and as a poster at tdtangents.creator-spring.com...

This is amazing. Seeing the eyes fade from the exoskeleton as the cicada pulls out is my favorite part too

I remember seeing these exoskeletons stuck to a tree once when i travelled as a kid and i thought they were dead cicadas until i googled and found out about the molting process. Amazing

It’s always fun to pick them up when I find them on trees while walking. Always a cool find.

I’m utterly fascinated with this process. I love when they start to come out during the early summer and I will go out at night and try to find ones I can photograph. But, I am irrationally terrified of them 😆. If one of them ever actually touched me I would totally lose my shit. Even photographing a few hundred of them hasn’t helped me get over my fear.

So how long does this usually take for a cicada because I am dealing with one right now and it took like within 10 minutes for all that to happen

I like nearly all creatures . I would never hurt one if these guys but for some reason they repulse me I think them existing en masse and the noise doesn't help . Glad I don't live where they do . Great video though
