Wish I Had Fished This Lure Sooner!

- My first Northern beach fishing of the season yielded a load of bass in perfect fishing weather. The lesson of this trip was to not blame brief lulls in the action on the fish. Sometimes a lure change is all that's needed.

After watching I’ve learned that if I ever catch a striper there’s a 90% chance you caught him first! Great video. Thanks!
You don’t know how good you are... 3 casts, 3 stripers. 5 casts without a fish and you consider changing lures. 6 casts without a fish and you do change lures. If I caught 3 stripers on 3 casts, I would be married to that lure to my own detriment. Your way obviously is the better way. Thank you for teaching me this. I never would have learned this on my own.
Interesting
Where? I'm going to trust in the buck tail
John is the reason i started throwing bucktails much more and with much more success! thank you john!
lost mine a few days ago to a big Jack or Snook. cut me off on the rocks :(
Same here but no luck so far for me
I started using them like 6-7 years ago for some fluke after watching John. They are a pro level lure and take a while to use correctly, weight selection is 80% of the bucktail game.
@@daviddelgado323 bucktails for fluke has been a game changer for me! but no luck with the bass so far. I only catch fluke on bucktails that are less than 1oz as well I've noticed. I'm definitely having a tough time gaging current and it still feels unnatural for me. I'm gonna buy a few different sizes this year and try to get a better feel for it. Thanks!
Really enjoyed this format. Gives good context into what and ultimately, why you’re thinking something. Very helpful. Thanks as always John
Bucktails don’t really get fished over here in the uk but I can think of a lot of places and species where I’m sure these could be my secret weapons: sea run trout on shallow coastlines and estuaries, pollock in deep rock marks and European bass on surf beaches all spring to mind. Cheers John, enjoyed this! Best wishes from sunny Scotland!
I love that rod John. The murdered out all black look is very sharp. I’m digging it. Catch em up welcome back north. - bruce from Boston
Everyone else: "watch the fight this fish put up!"
Skinner: "Yeah, this fight is taking time from my next fish."
haha .. true story
Would love to see a chart showing depth/structure for each of your videos (similar to what you have done in the Fluke Mastery class) so we can visualize why you picked one area vs another to fish.
Love the videos and commentary.
Tight lines.
Great non stop action video John and Happy Birthday my friend!!!!
Happy birthday Mr Skinner. Wishing you many many more!!!
I only have 5 mins left of break I can’t wait to watch this when I get home
Jeeze!!! Now I’ve gotta learn how to speed up my footage!! lol!! Great video! What a difference in the fish quality with that change! Nice going, Skinner!
I've watched many of your videos and I like your scientific approach to fishing.
I like the style of zipping through the non eventful pieces and slowing up for releases and comments.
Thanks for that input. First time I've tried it.
The fact that it is an uncut video is so helpful to appease our curiousity about how long you go in between bites/how hot the action is
A very informative session. Is there something even better? Great question. The experimentation paid off. Great change.
I've been chasing striper since i was 8 years old here on the west coast and i gota say your videos got me scratchin my neck i just bought some of youre bucktails cant wait to use umm
Nicely put together John..🤙🏼🤙🏼..
Thank you for the full 49!
Happy birthday and many more JS! I heard there are some fish that want to throw you a big birthday bash. I would come up with an excuse if I were you!!! All the best!!!
Hey John, ..... Buck tail jigs have around before I was born... I'm 60 years old, and I've been using them since I was 9 years old... It's a great all around lure here on the west coast northern California
If you consider that a mistake you should see me fishing. Great video as always and welcome home.
John, picked up your Dark Matter 9’ rod. I was looking for the two piece lami. There was none to be had. Spoke w/Josh from J&H he hooked me up with the Dark Matter. Having a blast with it! that 70/30 split really does give more of a one piece feel. 👍
I'm glad you like it! I agree 100% about it feeling like a 1-piece.
Great ones make it look so easy.
I am proud of you. Good job
Insane fishing from the shore. I use a lot of soft plastic lures here in New Zealand from a boat. We don't even have buck tails here, but im gonna make some. Thanks
Never even considered bucktails could be a regional thing since I grew up with them. Hope you enjoy using them, they are flexible and effective.
Happy birthday!!!! Jiggin jerks gave you up
Great job!!!
Hi John I'm John C. I live in Vallejo Ca I fish the Napa river off the San Francisco Bay. I love fishing for strippers on the flats and back waters.
seeing the way you fish makes me want to go back to fishing Buck tails. I fish swimbaits for the most part. I see your is clear my is muddy most of the time by the wind and low tide.
I love that spot! I got quite a few teener blues there last summer and my friend got a 40 there a few years back!
Hey, where’s that spot?
happy birthday skinner!
Welcome back North John
The algorithm likes comments 😉 SUPPORT THE LEGEND!
Maybe that fish was the same one, thinking he was playing fetch!!! Perfect lure for the day!
I love your videos, was hoping where up north you go fishing.
You make this look really easy.
happy birthday john!
Happy Birthday!!!
Good job👍👍👍
I use to make my own till those came out and there really good south Florida off shore I tip mine with a dead bait I’ve caught sailfish grouper snapper and kingfish on the black and blue ones
Skinners back !
Welcome back to the northeast..
I like the fast forward 😆🤣
Thanks for the input!
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I hope you know that I was just joking?
You always put up great stuff and I learned a lot.
Spro buck tails are great I also use crazy gear buck tails .........bottom line buck tails work no matter what brand
Happy bday john. Hope you have a great day!
Hmmm. Not sure how you know that. I'll blame Halkias. Thanks!
@@JohnSkinnerFishing you got it!
Happy birthday, 🎂
The timelapse of fighting the fish made me laugh so hard
Happy Birthday John! Blame John of Jigging Jerks YT channel for the heads up. Great video as always!
Marebou one of the best old fashion lure ever
The great thing about fishing is you can experiment with all kinds of jigs and lures, and fish has no real rules at how they bite.
John, how would you fish this bucktail from an ocean fishing pier (when you have waves to deal with)? Would you use 1-2oz bucktail from a pier? Can you do videos from piers please.
Happy belated birthday!
Entertaining and informative, as usual. Are the fish holding or cruising, there, at this time of year?
Holding on structure in a rip, I think.
Hi John,
Once again thank you so much for all of your videos. We moved to SE FL last year and since you winter in SW FL I wanted to ask you a question about bucktails. I noticed that you use very different colors, styles and trailers here in FL for snook than you use for bass in NY. Are the fish really that different whereas they need to be sought with the different types? For example you use pork trailers in NY but not in FL; Gulp! trailers for snook in FL but not for bass in NY. Just picking your brain - thanks for any help!
John whaddya think of using flarehawks up here in New York waters this kid put me on them but haven't got them yet I was in Florida not to far back wanted to take some back w me but wss nervous the airline would say no
Makes it look easy. Some of us go out for hours with out a bite.
More like days! Lol.
John, isn't this where someone catching one fish after another on the same one or 2 jigs would experiment around and see what else they will eat, or what other area around this spot will still get a bite? For me, after about the 6th fish, I'm ready to see how else I can catch them on while the bite is still hot.
John,
Are you still using the waders with the felt on the soles? Are they sufficient for the rocks or do you feel you need studded sole or Korkers? Thanks
Yes, but wear spiked korkers on weed-covered rocks.
HBD John! Wondering, what is that squeak that sounds like line rubbing when the fish is at your feet or you are taking out of the water to unhook? Also, you are tying direct, correct? No TA clip? Thks!
My hand sliding down the leader. Yes to TA 75# clip.
How do you catch fish every cast! I went fishing 10 times this year and caught ONE 20” striper…I am bewildered.
Ready to see some fluke-n-...
Nice first shore trip back! Really enjoyed the long format with the fast forward. Welcome back!
Thanks about the format comment.
nice stripers
keep the vids coming
Question .... what exactly is the bucktail supposed to represent and/or mimic ? Why do fish love the bucktail so much ? Great video John and welcome back to Long Island . I’ve learned so much over the last 1.5 years since I found your channel . Thank you
I think it's a good profile for a lot of things. They sure are deadly.
Balmy 88 degrees down here today John. :)
I don't miss that, but I understand the tarpon are really rolling.
you wore them out!
Really rippin current. Beautiful green clear water. What a beautiful area. Mute that ‘fast forward wind’ -scared the heck out of me!
John, where is this? Where can I do this type of fishing in jersey?
Any tips when you’re fishing bucktails and the seaweed is non stop? I usually shift lures, but I wonder if they’re is an alternative since I know the fish are on the bottom and using surface plugs, spoons, poppers, etc may not get to where they’re at
try a lighter weighted bucktail
If weed is thick, there is no way to beat it because it gets caught on everything. I'm assuming you're talking about suspended weed, and not what's laying on the bottom. If it's bottom weed, then what the other guy wrote - go lighter.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing well I guess I know now to just go home😭😂 sometimes it’s so bad even my top water lures get caught lol
@@Snick4444 thanks I’m gonna try that next time if it’s just bottom weeds, if it’s suspended then I guess I’m outta luck
Try moving a bit. Sometimes I encounter this in the bays and moving 200 feet can make all of the difference.
what is that extra bit that you add with the buck tail, that look like a tail. Thanks for all your videos, enjoying all of them. From Australia.
Either an Ottter Tail Bait Strip or a Fat Cow Jig Strip. There's a link in the video description.
The a bucktail nearly all day and nothing... gotta keep working on it
What kind of clip is attached to lure? Is there any difference/advantage to tying directly?
It's a tactical anglers clip, and there's a link in the video description. The advantage is that you can change lures easily without having to cut into your leader each time. The lure action is fine on the clip, and I always use the clip for my striper fishing.
Why do you use otter tail strips for stripers instead of Gulp lures?
Just bought your new fluke rod, I’m so excited!!
same here...from J&H....unfortunately one of the eyelets came bent :( Called J&H and in the process of having them make it right....fingers crossed they stand behind it.
@@reelsweetfishing man that sucks, this is going to be my first fluke rod so I hope it’s nice!!!
It will be. These are built solid.
I'm surprised. It will take a lot of force to bend those. They'll take care of it for you I'm sure. Come after me if they don't.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks John. Talked with Josh and in process....The thing was wrapped so good in shipping but those delivery guys can be real rough on things. Looking forward to many fluke on the Dark Matter John Skinner edition!
Hey John, great video! quick question if you don't mind. I'm looking to get my first surf cast rod this weekend, do you have any recommendations? perhaps a reel recommendation as well. looking to spend around 400. Much appreciated
Where do you plan to fish? Ocean beach? Bays? That will help me help you.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing mostly ocean beaches and bays yea.
At the risk of seeming self-promotional, I'd get this rod: bit.ly/3lqoIss. I'd pair it with this reel: bit.ly/3lsUrZI This comes in at $460. A lower-priced but good reel is this: bit.ly/3tYkviD Total= $420.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing It's funny you recommended that rod, it was one of the ones I was looking at and what made me decide to ask for your opinion in the first place. Just made up my mind, thanks a ton john! I'll be placing the order after work.
Great content John! Any reason you didn't keep a few for the table?
I never keep stripers. I rather eat fluke. I doubt any were legal size (28''). One at best.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I hear ya and don't blame you there. Can't imagine anything better than fresh fluke fillets! It's too bad that regulations for recreational fishing have tightened drastically in NC where I fish usually. I have heard that all doormat fluke/flounder are female and males are much smaller. If this is true, wouldn't a slot limit keep more egg laying females in the population and encourage harvest of males? Thoughts? Thanks
Welcome back John!! How are the salt x reels
holding up for you? I’m on the fence with getting the 6K to pair with your dark matter rod
That's what I use on my dark matter skinner rod. I have 2 seasons on my 6K with no issues. The only issue I had with the 4 K was having the little spring that makes the drag noise get knocked off, both times on sharks.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Sounds good to me! Thank you again!
@ John skinner fishing hi mate where can I purchase this lures thanks John .
Do you wear anything on your index finger? I find that even if i cast easy, I cut myself when using braid.
I never have and always wondered why people do. I'm guessing lots of casting toughens them up.
Hi. In your opinion can jigs and lures be just as good (or maybe better?) with catching fish as live bait or real meat bait????
Jigging Gulp for fluke (flounder) usually out-produces bait. I don't even consider bringing bait for fluke, and if someone brings it on the boat, they usually convert for good pretty fast. I've seen it happen over and over.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing wow.... Thank you so much for the feedback. And it is great to know that jigs and lures can even work better than real bait!
I still prefer kastmasters over bucktails. I can see why some people prefer bucktails though.
Go west and try for California halibut
Buck tail brutality
How do you find these locations John? Also, how long do you fish a spot before you move on?
Google Earth mostly. The other question is much harder because it depends how experienced I am with the spot.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks John. I go to a spot and fish until it's time to go home. Hence why I skunk a lot.
The Bionic rod
In your opinion spend the $500 for a saltx 6000 or just spend the extra money and get a VS?
The SaltX is $379. I think the VS is significantly more.
John, are you matching any kind of hatch with the bucktail selection or are you making them hit what is offered?
Bucktails are a generic imitation of a lot of things these fish eat.
John I notice your against current wouldn’t you normally fish that with current?
Excellent observation. I'm partially against it because I'm focused on a bottom feature that is slightly downcurrent.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thank you for the lesson I fish an area very similar in RI
hi,,,is there a squid or artificial tail on the jig? can u tell us what is it ?
enjoyed every single videos u post
thanks
fish on
Otter Tail Bait Strip or Fat Cow Jigz Strip - there's a link in the video description.
This guy just makes it look to easy hey John send me some locations to fish in Jersey thanks
But you guys have the bigger strippers on the east coast plus big blue fish, ... we don't have blues here on the west coast...
Damn how many was thath
Northern blood is thicker there's no crying in striper fishing except sometimes
you can throw a piece of aluminum foil on a hook and a striper will eat it
Get into any good fluke yet John? I’ve heard it’s pretty bad so far.
I've only made 2 brief tries that were parts of mixed-bag trips. My best so far is a 25-incher.
hi
@6:20 "these fish have sea lice". I'm admittedly not on your level of fishing expertise. I've been fishing New Jersey from Sandy Hook to Ocean City since the 90s and have no idea what sea lice are or look like.
Like little shrimp things on the skin of the fish.
first 3 casts...
