Lightning Ridge Opal Miner

Bob Hewlett came to lightning ridge 47 years ago, stayed and became an opal miner. He has pegged a new claim and is optimistic he may have found his fortune …at last. But meanwhile Bob visits his old opal dealer mate Gerry.

I drove out here from Tweed Heads around 2 years ago. It was very sad to see two highway patrol Chryslers pulling people over back to back and handing out defects and fines. I watched them for about half hour pulling over every single car that came through it was a disgrace. I feel bad for the people doing it tough out there and getting picked on by a lousy highway patrol. F em

I bought a 3.5 carat black opal from lightning ridge for abt 600usd,didnt think much of it but it has all the colour spectrum.. when to the jeweller set it to a ring.. the guy ask me how much i bought, i jokingly said 1500usd, he said would i let go for 1400usd, i said ok... made a 800usd profit.. hehe
