I remember one game between the Padres and Rockies where I fell asleep listening to it and when I woke for work the next morning the game was still being played. Colorado won the game and both catchers went the distance.
Both catchers going the distance is crazy!! I think the game you are talking about is from April 17th, 2008. Braves vs Mets July 4th 1985. 19 innings and a few rain delays, game ended at 3:55am. Mets won 16-13 and the Braves had their "fireworks night". Also known as the Rick Camp game.
Phillies played until 4:30am in 1993 at Veteran Stadium! The Vet was letting people in the the stadium after the clubs and bars started to close. It was supposed to be a doubleheader but there was a rainout & then extra innings… You can actually find the game on RUclips
That last pitch to Harold Bains looked about 2 inches outside, and he said “F that!” Swung at the ball with all he could make of it and won the game. I mean he was looking for an outside pitch to have the best chance to hit; but he definitely had to go get it to have a chance.
For some random game between two middling teams, there sure were a lot of hall of famers. Sutton, Yount, Fingers, Fisk, Baines, and Seaver. Molitor was there too, albeit out for the year
If someone calls themself a fan, they should want more, not less. It's the networks that hate running past schedule, and push rhetoric for shorter games. Extreme extra inning games create a whole new dynamic in the bullpen and on the bench to see which manager runs out of pitchers or position players last.
I Remember in 2011 the Phillies and Reds played a game that went to 19 innings with the Phillies getting the Win 5-4, I also Remember the Phillies and Dodgers in 1993 in which it went to 20 innings the Dodgers had a 6-5 lead in the top of the 20th only to see the Phillies score 2 in the bottom of the 20th and the Phillies won 7-6.
In a 24-inning tie between the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Athletics on July 21, 1945, Les Mueller put on arguably the best pitching performance ever in MLB history, going 19⅔ innings while giving up only 1 unearned run before finally being pulled with 2 out in the 20th inning.
I remember the astros going to 18 innings both times. First in '05 against the braves as an NL team, and then again in '22 against the mariners as an AL team
That wasn't a continuous game. The Mets and the Giants still hold the record, set on May 31,1964. The new rules were for the dipsomaniac sports writers who were missing too many last calls.
while these games are fun to look back at, nobody wants to sit in a ballpark for 6+ hours just to see one team win. on top of that, its not great for player health and safety for games to go so long as they have to play every day.
Thats a long time, in a unrelated sport but one i find interesting in a boxing match in 1893 Jack Burke vs Andy Bowen fought 110 rounds and the fight lasted for 7hrs and 19 minutes ! It was finally ruled a no contest by the referee , Today fights only are 12 rounds and about 36 mins lol
I like the pitch clock, it actually fixes the problem. Extra innings weren't the problem, that's just more baseball. The problem was all the standing around waiting for baseball to occur.
If we don't look at game length strictly by hours or innings played, there are some suspended games which, arguably, could be said to have lasted months. Marlins and Mets, April 11, 2021, was suspended on top of the 1st inning (!) and resumed and completed on August 31, that is, 142 days later. The game time itself is listed as 4 hours and 5 minutes.
It seems your criteria was innings played instead of time. You missed a golden opportunity to discuss the Expos vs Braves game July 4th 1985, known as the Rick Camp Homerun game. It lasted 8 hours or more (because of rain delays). The wet field was like the outfielders were in a wading pool. Nasty. A coach and a player got ejected. And a relief pitcher ate 7 cheeseburgers. And of course the Camp HR. Seeing is believing! ruclips.net/video/GiXWnLFoCIU/видео.html
You forgot the 18 inning game, in Phoenix, just a couple seasons ago. Yadi caught all 18 innings. I picked up Matt Carpenter and took him to his hotel. He was exhausted. (I drive a limo.) This was very recent. How did you miss thiss?
Imagine liking the pitch clock. Rushing everyone to pitch or be looking at the pitcher. Only good thing they've done is make the bases bigger.. idc if the game took two days. Some games are exciting in extra innings..
To be fair, game time in 2023 is 2 hours and 39 minutes on average. That is very similar to the 60s-80s which averaged 2 hours and 33 minutes. The pitch clock is not reducing the amount of game played, it’s reducing the antics pitchers and batters do during the game that extend the time in an unnecessary manner.
@@johngoldsworthy7135 imagine being a loser and having a short attention span. Baseball was fine then more than now. It's you new generation of kids they're tryna market too. Lazy no good bastards
Pitch clock making all games shorter is a bigger issue than the games that were too long. They were rare enough as it was. It wasn't common to see a 5 hour game in 2019 even though this video makes it seem like it was. I would bet my life that the high number of pitcher injuries and insane regression this season is due to the pitch clock. "It works in the minors" isn't a justifiable reason for it to be in the majors; they throw like 50 fewer IP a year down there. If they wanted to cut down on the insane outliers like Pedro Baez, fine, have the clock be 20 seconds and we're fine. But the current clock is too short.
I did a lot of research on this my man, I know I’m right. That game lasted 6 hours 22 minutes which is very long, but it isn’t even the longest playoff game. In game 3 of the 2018 World Series the dodgers beat the Red Sox in 18 innings after 7 hours and 20 minutes. The game I covered in this video lasted 25 innings and took 8 hours and 6 minutes.
You would think, but for some reason in baseball they say .1 innings for getting 1 out, .2 innings for getting 2 outs, and 1 inning for getting 3 outs. It’s weird, but it’s how everyone keeps track.
What do you think about these abnormally long games? Are you glad we have new rules preventing these types of games?
Nahhh this game is too long, I’m glad games can’t go that long anymore
