  • I use complimentary colors to create the deep fall shadows in this scene. Mixing the green with red for the ground shadows.
    I'm most often painting small works on location and carry very few colors with me. Max of 4 or 5. This is one reason I often use my sky color for shadows. I simply don't have the complimentary colors on my pallet.

    PEN: The Platinum Fountain pen with Extra Fine nib. Platinum Carbon Black ink.
    PAPER: Size- 5"x7"
    Arches 140lb Hot Press Paper for this Video.
    My papers of choice include Arches and Fabriano 140lb Hot press and Cold press paper and Strathmore 500 series Sketchbooks. All are 100% cotton rag.
    For beginners, I recommend starting with a high quality paper and experimenting with different types. As your style develops, you'll get a feel for which type is best. Waiting to switch to a better quality paper later will be much like learning to paint all over again.
    MY PALETTE: All tube paints!
    Winsor Newton- Yellow Ochre, Sepia, Burnt Sienna, Winsor Red, Davy's Gray, Ultramarine, Sap Green.
    DaVinci - Phthalo Blue, Quinachridone Fuchsia, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Deep. *I plan to replace the Fuchsia with Winsor Newton Quinacridone Magenta when mine runs out.*
    MIXING PALETTE:
    The palette is the mixing tray from a "Koi" Watercolour travel set. The colours are set up so the ones I mix together most often are close together.
    BRUSH: A Polar Flo 1/2 inch flat brush is my current favorite. The bristle were originally white but have become stained. And a Currys #3 detail brush.

    Your simplicity is just amazing....when you add the colors and shadings and shadows....it's just the warmest, most familiar scene in my memories. Your colors are the epitome of perfect and natural. Love this one so much.

    I really love your painting style! Several of your tutorials have been an inspiration for me. I started to teach myself, through RUclips video’s, how to watercolor about 3 years ago. Thank you for sharing your gift!

    A profound trip in the realm of time travel. As you painted the rear house extension into shadow, I felt the temperature drop about 10 degrees. A slight breeze began to blow.

    Hi Peter, this is really nice; it would make a good greeting card cover. The weather where I live is really dry and I have not tried to do watercolor painting outdoors. Along with the dryness, we also have wind. Sometimes, the wind is really strong. If I were to be in an area where I could paint outdoors, I have a palette that has just 7 colors on it. I have a lot of different tubes of paint from Daniel Smith; but, the ones I use the most are the ones that came in my original set of 7 that was labeled as Susie Short's Essential 7 set from Daniel Smith. It has warm and cool versions of each of the primary colors along with a color that is like burnt sienna called quinacridone burnt orange. With these 7 tubes of paint, I can mix just about any color I want.

      I used that exact palette (split primary single pigment transparent plus burnt sienna) for a long time. It's very usable, and can do just about anything with enough mixing. However I put together a slightly modified version of this palette combined with the smaller one he's using most recently to follow some of his paintings.. I dropped the phthalo blue, and went with cad yellow and red since I can mix the orange for the bright accents.. and I ADORE it. Everything is easy, and everything looks amazing... doesn't matter the season, or even the subject.. seaside, forest, snow, florals, whatever. It's so soft, and easy on the eyes, with this cohesiveness.. it's almost impossible to get a jarring color no matter what you combine. I feel like the Winsor Newton earth tones/green are key though.. they are all kind of muted and I'm not sure you would get the same effect with DS or other brands... maybe Sennelier they have that same soft feel. I played a bit with some other brands and they were so much more saturated/high key it just didn't work the same. I also found a new respect for sepia.. I love it so much more for darkening than the typical payne's grey or neutral tint.. it gives this touch of warmth that peeks out of even cool mixes.

    Hi Peter...great stuff! I have been looking at getting a Platinum fountain pen...how do you like it? How does it compare with the Lamy Safari? Thanks for the videos!

    • @PeterSheelerart
      @PeterSheelerart  5 лет назад

      Thanks Jason. I have the Platinum 3376 with an Ultra extra fine nib. It is an amazing nib for being so fine and works flawlessly with their Carbon black ink. I have Lamy's as well and they are great pens and hard to beat for the price. Unfortunately, Lamy inks are not waterproof nor are they archival, but you can use other inks with the converter. Hope this helps.

    Peter, how long do you wait till the ink is dry BEFORE applying the watercolour?

    • @PeterSheelerart
      @PeterSheelerart  4 года назад

      I don't wait. You need good paper as well as waterproof ink.

    • @ArtOfDavidAmos

      Peter I have good paper and waterproof ink, but the ink is not suited to fountain pens.
