Hello and good day, a standard is a standard, it would be no different than having a financial standard, or a height, education standards. Now the more detailed you are with said standards the more you narrow your options/ fishing hole, but that's called free will.
They're horrible, and pointless. Everyone has such different standards, so why try to adhere to just one?

If there's a car you want, or an apartment complex, maybe even a restaurant you would like to eat at those ie I've mentioned above has standards/ rules/ requirements you must meet in order to enjoy what those things have to ofter.

@@Nightcall411 Beauty standards are the least practical reason to be in a relationship. Maybe that's why Japan (and most of East Asia) is experiencing a birth rate crisis. Beauty doesn't guarantee a strong and healthy family. Beauty fades with age. What is the point in having that as a requirement? NONE. Many beauty standards don't even align with HEALTH, like having a "peach butt". What does that have to do with health? What does a small face have to do with health? None of it is important. Until these people understand how wasteful and childish those standards are, they will never build lasting and mature relationships.
I'm japanese male but definitely disagree with those standards. "Chubby" women do care how they look and make so much efforts as well as the others. They are pretty, beautiful and awesome.

I’m 170 cm and 70 kg and I can’t imagine myself being under 50kg, that sounds unhealthy! I’d rather be happy than fitting a ridiculous standard that no one can fit into.

The beauty standard in Japan seems similar to the rest of the world to me. If you fit those standards its no problem but if you're everyone else you may want to consider something more attainable...

Yes there are beauty standards especially for women in every country, but I felt my confidence plummet in Japan. Prior to that, I lived in Singapore, UK & US and never had a problem not wearing make up. In Japan, I did get kawaii or kawaiirashi comments, but also negative ones especially one comparing me to my white friends & how beautiful they are. It was uncomfortable how very average white/ European people were automatically considered beautiful.

Everybody wants to be slim im Brazil, but I think the beauty standard for women is what we would call "cavalona", which translates to "big female horse" lol. It's pretty much the way the Kardashians used to look, with long thick hair too. The kawaii aesthetic has never been popular here, so women are expected to be very womanly. We can weight more than 50kg without being bullied, but can't really go very far beyond that number, withought it becoming a source of insecurity and social anxiety.

wow under 98 lbs I would have looked emaciated i was 105 and 5'5 when I was 7 and it was difficult becasue people always thought that I was an teenager acting like a kid when I hit my height of 5'10 when i was 11, I was about 140 lbs and definitely not willowy very different from my mum who was size O-2 when I was a baby and she was 5'10 too. Totally different body shape, she is all legs and I have short legs and a long torso with dense bones (built more like a line backer than a dancer like my brother who were all football players) but I have to admit I have never wanted to be 110 or under as an adult. The first young lady is right you have to love the skin you are in wheher it is thin or big and I appreciate that. Besides Pretty/handsome is personal reaction not everyone looks at people the same way regardless of popular standards. Why fit into any kind of standards just do you and people can either appreicate or get on with their lives or get a life you know. It really irks me when people push people to fit into a particular standard and not allow them to explore their own sense of self.

@@astrayagrarian Uh, the fact that there are a lot of fat people in the US doesn’t mean that being fat is the the ideal of beauty now? Are you living in bizarro world or something? If that was the case, people everywhere would be going on diets to gain weight and taking weight gain supplements. Instead, weight loss drugs and things like “flat tummy teas” are still super popular.
Like yeah, in the past 10-15 years the most desired kind of body for women has become “thicker” in the US, but people try to achieve said thickness through working out to build muscle in places like their butts and thighs or through procedures like BBLs. Just look at how many fitness influencers are out there in social media and how many followers they have.
There ARE societies in the world that truly prefer for women to be fat, and they go to the same extreme extents to be fat as women elsewhere go to be thin and/or built. In some places in North Africa, teenage girls are straight up force-fed as many calories as a body builder eats during a day by their families to gain weight because they fear they won’t be able to get married if they’re not fat. This is called Leblouh. Feel free to look it up. That’s as damaging as extreme dieting or extreme exercise is and no one in their right mind would promote anything like that.
Instead, the reason you see more fat people now than you’d see during the, I don’t know, 50s or the 60s is because being able to have a proper exercise routine and afford healthy food is something that requires both a lot of free time and a considerable amount of money these days. Unlike during most of the story of humanity, where poor = skinny, nowadays poor people are generally able to feed themselves. The issue is, they’re mostly only able to feed themselves with cheap food, and the unhealthiness of cheap food has increased dramatically during the years. If someone has to work three jobs to get by, their diets are probably going to be comprised mostly of cheap, filling food and they won’t have the time to hit the gym either. You’ve probably noticed that, in the US, people who are very fat tend to be lower class. It’s why you see people in mobility scooters in places like Walmart instead of in high-end stores.
I feel like people tend to largely misunderstand what body positivity is about. Literally no one wants skinny people to suddenly become fat and, if you find someone saying so, they’re either trolling or have a weight gain fetish. Body positivity is, at its core, just people wanting to live their lives without being mistreated for being “ugly”. That’s why it doesn’t only apply to fat people, but people with deformities, skin conditions, just plain traits that aren’t seen as conventionally beautiful (aquiline noses, for example), etc. All they want is to be able to live without being treated as if they’re subhuman. Is a fat person unhealthy? Who knows! Probably yes, because, as I mentioned above, being perfectly healthy is costly nowadays. But the average thin person is probably not perfectly healthy as well for the same reasons. There are lots of people who look outwardly thin but suffer from things like high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and heart issues. In fact, if a fat person drops weight too quickly due to extreme dieting or an ED, they’ll often end up much unhealthier than they were in the first place, even if they’re skinnier.
But even if someone is unhealthy, they still shouldn’t be bullied. A lot of people are unhealthy because they smoke or drink too much alcohol, but they’re largely left alone. The hate fat people get is because people find them ugly, not because people don’t want them to be unhealthy. “I only treat them like that because they’re unhealthy and I want them to do better” is just an excuse bullies use to feel better about being horrible people. If that wasn’t the case, fat people wouldn’t be treated horribly for doing things like being in public, wanting to wear clothes that fit them or going to the gym. Isn’t that counterintuitive? If you want them to be healthier, then by all means you should encourage them being out and about, exercising and doing so in clothing that allows them to move freely, don’t you?
To sum it up, the fact a lot of people are fat in the US doesn’t reflect the “standard of beauty” and it never did. There were already tons of fat people back in the 90s and the 00s when the Kate Moss body was at its most popular. The thick women that are popular now achieve this look through exercise and plastic surgery, not through getting fat. Body positivity is simply about wanting to be able to do completely normal things without being ridiculed for it. If you want to blame something for the fact women want to be thicker now instead of skinny, blame Instagram.
One of the reasons why i stopped dating Japanese guy was me being not Pettit like other Japanese girls.
As a result, i also left Japan and married to a non-Japanese.
I remember only japanese media praised how beautiful she became when Nichole Richie lost tons of weight... In the meantime, North American media was concerned about her for losing that much weight and how unhealthy she looked.

Being overweight shouldn't be judged or hated and nobody deserves to be treated rudely, but we also must recognize that HEALTH matters first and foremost- and weight is one of the most recognizable symptoms of health. I should know! For the majority of my life, I was between 105-115 lbs at 5'2". Due to certain autoimmune diseases, my health has not only worsened, but my weight. I am now steadily between 145-150- _which is not healthy for my weight, and while my weight gain wasn't the first of hundreds of signs and symptoms, it is most certai my the one that is the highest indicator to those around me that I am in my worst health ever!_ More and more "fat positive/body positive" influencers are dying now than ever before. I could name several.
Fat positive/body positive doesn't exist to tell people not to take care of their health. They are telling people not to be cruel and mean to them just because of it. Their doctors can tell them what weight is best for them. No one should be evil to anyone or discriminate against anyone just because they are "unhealthy". If anything, we should treat unhealthy people with more kindness because they need our support. Would you treat someone with cancer cruelly by bullying them because they're "unhealthy"? No. Yet, people do this to people who are of a certain weight. They want to bully them into submission. What is the point in that? No one gets influenced to gain or lose weight, so bullying doesn't solve anything. I feel that your story is made up and you are commenting just to prove a political point. I'm superbly skinny, but my hemoglobin was at 4! I have chronic anemia and have to have a hysterectomy because I can't carry my uterus. Being too skinny can also come with health risks. This is why we don't look at a person to decide health. We talk to our doctors to decide that.

These "beauty standars" are nothing more than discrimating; scrutinizing through a large group of people-be it women or men- in a very, considerably biased and dehumanizing system, in order to appease to narrow-minded-ironically even, insecure people and pervesed men- in order to pressure ordinary REAL people-that make up the larger number of population, into trying to pressure then to conform into an image and or idolize a specific image.
This is certainly capitalization as well in every form.
This technique is certainly a serial network of toxicity and it's NOT natural and realistic point of view.
Realize it's impossible to mirror another's image because by the laws of nature and the cosmos-and I'm not religious, just practical and realistic, that we are Indvidual's and are genetically different by right and man's laws crossing into the fundamental of practicality of being a unique genetic individual is perverse and FANTASY.

I love critical thinking and I have an amazing teacher-who is a horseman where what he teaches is so invaluable is to look in the mirror and question not only yourself but your environment and how to humble yourself and think better and research. Be an observer not a follower because you are your own entity, and the masses equals a group of people that follow one way or person. Be your own follower and never stop learning.
I wish we all had a teacher that can teach you to love you and accept your beautiful flaws because it's meant to be there and have a purpose, just as I research the many merits to having color. Amazing.
Only you can make yourself happy whether there is something you don't like about you are not. We are only human and only you should judge and if you change, do it for you. Self-acceptance.
A true teacher who can raise you to love your own beauty then trying to emulate someone else's is well worth following because they are telling you to follow your own star, guiding you NOT controlling you.

Yea you think these healthy beauty standards are toxic until you realize in America there’s an obesity epidemic in American women and the average weight is 171 lbs (78 kgs). That first woman he interviewed is actually “underweight” by American beauty standards.
American beauty standards still prefer slimmer women, although there is a lot of preference for curves or muscular builds, too. She would still be considered overweight or obese in the US. There is a very vocal and trendy "body positivity movement" that would make you think Americans typically find obese people attractive, but it's really not as typical. The obesity epidemic is mostly due to car-based infrastructure and culture, and our food industry. It's all very dystopian.

@ebllrd I don't think most women here want to be overweight, and I don't think most men select intentionally for obese women here. Yes, obese people still get into relationships, but that's because weight and attractiveness aren't everything when it comes to dating, and people will settle for less on appearance if they get enough out of it otherwise, or if they think they can't "do better." IMO, the "beauty standard" is what people aspire to and strive for, or select for when dating.

"Normalizing" is just another way of saying we should be evil to people who are different. It's always the same "types" that say this, too. The spoiled, rich, entitled folks whose parents paid for their university fees, cars, helped signed their homes, and take care of all of their children. If someone is unhealthy, that shouldn't be a license to be evil to them. I'm skinny. But I have chronic anemia and have to have a hysterectomy because my organs are too big for my body. Is that healthy? By looking at me, you wouldn't know this if you think skinny means healthy. Only a doctor can tell you the correct BMI and weight for your health, not some rando on the internet. You people say "I'm only saying this because it's unhealthy" to excuse yourselves for being shitty people. If I noticed someone was sick or unhealthy, the last thing I would be is evil to them.
