Thank you for posting this! I love her work and went to see her house. My brothers are also in Rosedale Cemetery not far from her resting place. My brother's name is Rhett (Basil) Butler!
It's such a shame that her last wishes were not met thanks to the hideous owners of Hollywood Cemetery at the time (1952). They refused to bury a black person in their cemetery. In 1999 the new owners of Hollywood Cemetery offered to have her remains moved and buried there but her family refused. They instead installed a monument in her memory.
in 1952 it was just a owner, actually under his ownership , towards the end, more people were being moved out than into the cemetery, but all that changed with the new owners, its very nice now
LB, yes, but not Sam. Sam was an independent producer, always one step ahead of the creditors, and although his made up last name, "Goldwyn" is part of MGM, he never was. His last name was Goldfish, and the made up name is a combination of a previous partner's name, Selwyn, who sold Sam out, but he liked the name Goldwyn and kept it. I think both of you are trolls, but wanted to supply some data to your screed.
She was great too in Alice Adams (1935) as the take-no-prisoners desultorily misserving dinner maid of Katherine Hepburn's pretentious character trying to impress her rich date Fred MacMurray. And in The Littlest Rebel as another Mammy variation, a plantation cook trying to outwit Shirley Temple's serial sneak swipes of her freshbaked cookies, but then getting floored and floured by a banged kitchen door.
Made so many movies that was wonderful I like to see a lot of them but I don't know the names of my guess I'll look it up on Google I loved her and now I'm Gone With the Wind though
"Sugar Hill" Like many of the African-Americans in the entertainment industry, Hattie made her home in the West Adams district of Los Angeles. In previous times, the district had been home to doctors, lawyers, and railroad barons. In the Depression era, the area had fallen into hard times, with many residents needing to either sell their homes or rent out rooms in them. By the 1940s, the African-American entertainment community began purchasing homes in the district, nicknaming it ‘Sugar Hill’. Some property owners reacted to their new neighbors by adding restrictive covenants to their deeds. The covenants either prohibited African-Americans from purchasing a property or inhabiting inside once purchased. The practice was declared illegal by the US Supreme Court in 1948.
When I was a little girl, well after 1948, my white grandparents bought 10 empty lots in Beverly Hills. The day before escrow closed, we all went to see the land and hear what Papa had planned. Some neighbors saw me and my Ethiopian dad, and the sale was dropped. Fortunately, they found 12 lots in a line in Los Feliz-Silverlake on a cliff side which lent itself even better to his idea of a family compound and no covenants were attached.
@@meeeka Terrible, but if it was after 1948, it would have been illegal for that to happen, and even prior to 1948, there were 100's of cases won in LA County against this sort of discrimination. ACLU lawyer, Loren Miller, won the 1944 case Anderson vs Auseth, and you can read about it here: Making a "black Beverly Hills": The struggle for housing equality in modern Los Angeles docplayer.net/88421106-Making-a-black-beverly-hills-the-struggle-for-housing-equality-in-modern-los-angeles.html

What a great video you have shared. My Great Grandmother lived on 24th Street off the Adam's area so I am familiar with this area. You are so right that this was the "Sugar Hill" of LA.

Cynthia Dickerson Of course, Black Actors and Black Actresses, for that time were not able to compete with their white counterparts. It was a dream come true to make it in Hollywood, even playing roles of subservient maids, butlers....and slaves! Whatever image they created, it could not....and would not be comparable to White Hollywood. For Hattie McDaniel, owning a house like this was her wildest dream come true. It was not just to impress others....but to make herself happy glad; coming from such humble beginnings and working as hard as she did to achieve what only whites were allowed to do. Read her biography...it is very interesting. LOL... Obviously I am a HUGE fan of hers! Love that she and Clark Gable became such good friends. Although I was very young at the time, I remember how sad my grandmother was when she passed away.
She was rich evidently and rubbed noses with the best of names. Was well known and certainly was accepted. People would have loved her house. Did he know which house? Samuel Goldwyn and Louie B Mayer CREATED segregation. They were Racist scumbags and they used the media to promote their cruel ideas. They, Peddowood elites wanted only Aryan Whites working and living by them. Surprized?
In L.A., ALMOST everybody doesn't give a good goddamn about their local history, nothing's preserved, these places are always torn down, never any historical plaques placed at important locations.... People are people regardless of skin color. Houses have their time and they break down like people do. She will never be forgotten because gone with the wind will never be forgotten. Thank you Hattie !
sthpac69 i
It because they are not for blacks... they just put on the image like they are...
sthpac69 what will probably happen is someone will buy the house and tare it down sad to say
David Clark ....this was in 2015....the house is under heavy renovation.... I am from the area and I see them doing construction on this very house.
Thanks for the video! Loved Ms Hattie McDaniel! Her autobiography is very interesting. Someone should do a movie about her lifetime
Great video! Just found your channel. Hattie deserved so much more than she got. Wonderful lady. RIP Miss Hattie
Tamara Figge well whites were just doing what they do, be racist pieces of shit.
It's my opinion that Hattie McDaniel's role in "Gone With the Wind" was just as lovable or more than the other roles.
I agree. She was funny sometimes as well. The film wouldn't have been half as enjoyable without Hattie.
@MsWhoEverWhatEver IT WAS NOT DEGRADING YOU IDIOT.
She is unforgettable! Gone with the Wind" would not have been the same without her!
I love this woman. She had more character, grace & dignity than her counterparts could ever dream of. RIP Hattie ♀️💜
Thank you for doing this on Hattie! Love to know Clark Gable really liked Ms. McDaniel!
This is such a great and loving tribute to Hattie McDaniel. Thank you!
One of the greatest movie stars we ever had, her roles were often limited to stereotypes, but she elevated every picture she was in.
What a beautiful old house, it must have been amazing back when she bought it and lived there. Just imagine how beautifil it could be if one restored it. She lived an amazing life. Rip Hattie. Ty for doing this video.
I LOVE Miss Hattie McDaniel! She was & is my FAVORITE actress! She had more acting ability & screen presence than any of the so called actresses today. I would have paid a BUNCH of money to watch & hear her read a phonebook! And NO 1 could rock a red silk petticoat & do it justice like Miss McDaniel. RIP, Miss McD. Thanks for the memories.
She's dead? :(
Absolutely!
TY in sharing this. I just began watching clips on this fascinating woman. She sounded like a great person to spend time with. The knowledge Clark Gable received from her every Sunday. Wow. A lot of change can happen at a table. He had love and found value in their friendship. Love that!
Miss McDaniel's brilliant, sharp, loving comic deliveries brought much life to every scene she was in. She is truly a Hollywood treasure.
Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful heartfelt video of Hattie McDaniel. All of the factual information that you provided is so much appreciated 🤗
If They Do A Biography movie Of Hattie McDaniel Octavia Spencer would be a Perfect Candidate for the role 💯
Yup hands down
She did Madam CJ Walker justice. I agree she would be great
Yaaasss!!!!! I love Octavia
Was she the one that was in the maid that that said eat my shit cause if it is í love her she would be the best to play her
Indeed
Thank you for taking your time and for all of your effort to put this video together for those of us that appreciate Hattie and her talent. It lets some of us see something about her personal life that we wouldn't otherwise be privy to. Also, there is absolutely nothing annoying pertaining to this video and most definitely nothing that is derogatory. You did a great job paying tribute to this wonderful lady that gave, and through video and radio recordings, continues to give us much joy and entertainment.
J yes. Thankyou. All comments from racists and PC need to be blocked.
I loved Miss Hattie, and Miss Butterfly McQueen, there was a lot of Great actress of color back in the day
Thank you for this video..I'm 73 & have been fan of hers since a young child..she was an exceptional talent I didnt watch GWTW until my 40's I'm glad she won..she deserved it..my favorite movie with her in it is Since You Went Away! She made me laugh & cry T y again 💚👵
Thank you for a wonderful, well deserved tribute to Ms McDaniel. I’m sure she would be very sad to see the struggles that African Americans are still facing in 2020.
Thank you for posting this! I love her work and went to see her house. My brothers are also in Rosedale Cemetery not far from her resting place. My brother's name is Rhett (Basil) Butler!
Thanks for honoring Dear Hattie RIP
Amen to that.
Love her.
Thanks Heaps for your wonderful time and tour. I loved her cheekiness 🌹✨🌹
It's such a shame that her last wishes were not met thanks to the hideous owners of Hollywood Cemetery at the time (1952). They refused to bury a black person in their cemetery. In 1999 the new owners of Hollywood Cemetery offered to have her remains moved and buried there but her family refused. They instead installed a monument in her memory.
in 1952 it was just a owner, actually under his ownership , towards the end, more people were being moved out than into the cemetery, but all that changed with the new owners, its very nice now
I think I read something that Hattie McDaniel was Re buried in another Cemetery in Hollywood sometime in the last 5 or 6 years or so
her family didn't want to disturb her , and will leave her at Rosedale Cemetery, where she was buried after her funeral
Lyle Petrov Zionist!¡!
Thank u Sir for this Beautiful memorial to Ms. Hattie McDaniel!!
You sound like you have so much endearment for Ms. Hattie!❤
ty for the upload I loved her especially as mammie in the best movie ever gone with the wind greetings from scotland
I love that movie too💖
Made so many movies that was wonderful I like to see a lot of them but I don't know the names of my guess I'll look it up on Google I loved her and now I'm Gone With the Wind though
Thank you for doing this. I hope the house ends up in the hands of someone who will preserve it the way it deserves.
"Sugar Hill"
Like many of the African-Americans in the entertainment industry, Hattie made her home in the West Adams district of Los Angeles.
Nuqwestr, Thanks for providing that bit of History!
that's a typical Republican Racist mentality, no different today than Trump and his bigoted followers
Thank you so much for this. I love our Mammy McDaniels forever. 💖💕🙏🏻

THANK YOU so much for the really wonderful amount of information and the video of the former home of such an amazing woman :)
All homes like these that you've showed should be restored & preserved forever...
With love & thanks from NSW Australia xxx
This would have been a good video had he stayed focused on ms McDaniel’s home I still don’t know which one was her home
I agree Latoya. Why couldn't he just pause at her house and get out a little maybe. Not quite sure which house is hers.
But the neighborhood is beautiful.
Lls
Agree he's so all over the place
he's so annoying...
@@dolfoboynas9583
I agree. I couldn't watch past 04:38.
I really like Hattie McDaniel, and, he didn't do her justice.
Thank you so much for this video. I'll check it out next time I'm there. Yes, I've said that as well "if the walls could talk". Oh, so sweet "good night sweet princess", she was. I concur.

BRAVO!!!
Fantastic post.
Well done video... I enjoyed your video, thanks! The respect and reverence you showed Ms. McDaniel was beautiful and heartwarming.
It doesn't look dilapidated to me ?
Very informative. I had NO idea. Also, filming the area (even the skies) the homes and streets prior to and around Hattie's house gives extra depth, for those of us who have never left Australian shores. Thank you x
1:30, the second house is the house my mother grew up in. It is actually an apartment building but the front is a house. Her Aunt now lives in it after her parents died.
Mr. Beck Thanks for a nice film. I did not know that Miss. Hattie McDaniel once lived in this neighborhood.
I'm so glad they erected a monument to her in the cemetery that refused her burial. Nice to know how close she and Clark Gable were. Loved their banter in the movie.
Miss your vlogs, Clyde. You really have a great vlog portfolio and I go back and watch them from time to time. This one was a goodie! 😊
Thank you for the tour.
I’m glad you video taped Hattie’s home. I could tell that you have great admiration for Ms. Hattie McDaniel, as much as I do. Thank you for posting!
Very informative. Thanks for sharing this.
I think its awesome that Clark Gable came by every Sunday. Such a beautiful thing in that time era to hear. I just learned today that she was from the same place I'm from. Such an inspiration to many. RIP 🙏 Hattie Clark and his grandson as well 🙏..
Hattie… great to see you had somewhere nice to live for these years!!!
What's an absolutely beautiful mansion.
Sam Reinecker damn black people living in mansions back in them times? Where are now this is certainly changing my views about how he was treated
Great video nice description of everything good job
What a great video you have shared. My Great Grandmother lived on 24th Street off the Adam's area so I am familiar with this area. You are so right that this was the "Sugar Hill" of LA.
I wish I could have seen the inside but it’s good to know she had her a mansion and she enjoyed some nice things in life. It’s a beautiful place.
Can see that you were impressed with the lives of these people and know their history. Thanks for your enlightening presentation.
Hattie only lived here from 1941-1947 or 48. She had moved to 3341 Country Club Dr in the late 40's until her death in 1952.Another interesting fact is that she resided at 2177 W 31 Street at the time she won her Oscar.
thank you for that info. :)
Hmmm....it doesn't seem she got to enjoy either home for very long.
Thank you so much the info going g to explore those neighborhoods my brother lives by country club
What joy to learn that her hard work yielded her so much success!! I am so thankful that she was appreciated in her life!!!
she was an actress, and she got paid well and she bought this house
Glenda Miller
Not as much as her white counterparts!
Cynthia Dickerson
Of course, Black Actors and Black Actresses, for that time were not able to compete with their white counterparts.
Many rich mansions are now dilapidated. People cannot
normally afford things like that.
Al worked out, and she made her way just fine. She lived with the finest.
Narvelan Coleman jeez never satisfied, everything will always be because the white man made more, has more, did more, knows more. I bet it’s not because he’s not sitting around looking for other cultures to blame for his lack of ump to want things in life. No, it’s easier to blame other why I’m so oppressed!! 🙄🙄
Carol Weaver When she died she had less than $10,000. So sad. She made the movie!
At the end of this video, the narrarator referred to Hattie McDaniel as a princess. She wasn't a princess , she was a queen!
Much" love to you for the showing.
Great video and thanks for sharing the really great homage to Ms. Hattie.
Even Hollywood was segregated! How sad to see these proud men and women relegated to second class citizeship on
film and then in real life.
True...but those Black film stars still lived far better than poor Whites at the time...keep that in perspective
russelljohnson2008 just cuz you say someone is second class don't mean they are We are all human
I'm so glad those days are gone!
Samuel Goldwyn and Louie B Mayer CREATED segregation. They were Racist scumbags and they used the media to promote their cruel ideas. They, Peddowood elites wanted only Aryan Whites working and living by them. Surprized?
@ Beverly......if you think those days are gone, you are fooling yourself.
It is just sophisticated now.
These homes are beautiful. The palm trees, the greenery, and blue skies makes it even more beautiful.
Thank you, yes she was a princess. I admire her.
RIP thanks for the Memories . Great and passionate Narrator
"the house is pretty dilapidated?". Jeez, it looks like it's kept up better than where I live.
In L.A., ALMOST everybody doesn't give a good goddamn about their local history, nothing's preserved, these places are always torn down, never any historical plaques placed at important locations.... It makes me nauseous how these local politicians don't preserve anything for posterity...... In TWENTY YEARS all these short sighted pricks shall be fined and committed FOR DESTRUCTION OF HISTORY!!!!!!!!!
In 27 March 1999 the Elvis home Graceland was put on the National Historic Registry. The house was built in 1939.
God Bless you Clyde Beck thank you 4-posting.
the house in 1:06 was used in Wes Craven's The People Under The Stairs 1991
First thing i thought when i saw it
Lj Ugarte They picked the perfect house for the movie- that house is creepy as hell!
Lj Ugarte Right I seen that to ......I thought I was trippin
No it wasn't. That house is on another street.
"The People Under the Stairs House " in on Harvard located 2 houses down from Hattie's. Also, the greek revival house that the narrator referred to as "antebellum " was used in "Running with scissors ". The house used as the exterior as Fisher and Sons Funeral Home in "Six Feet under" is about 2 blocks around the corner
Thanks Clyde for the tour. I appreciate the history of Hattie McDaniels. I also listened to the video of her life b4 seeing this one and she definitely was a pioneer. I hope you continue to share and I have subscribed.
Very enlightening and educational. Thank you for this!
Emma Jones )
I love your video and the time and effort you took to tell her story. And to make her present by thanking her. I appreciate you for educating us on what we may not find in a history book. I hope that many doors are opened for you. God bless.
When I watched gone with the wind the character I liked the most was mamie’s especially the scene where she is in the bedroom trying to make scarlet eat her food and adjusting her dress to not show too much of her shoulders, I just love that scene. She really deserved that Oscar.
HATTIE'S HOUSE IS THE FOCUS...THANK YOU FOR THE TOUR
She was in 109 movies gone with the wind is one of many
Thank you for posting this lovely video.
She was also in some early ‘Little Rascals’!
Wow! Really!? I loved watching that show every Saturday! I really didn't know that. That's for that information I will rewatch them now. 🌞
Nor did I, I have to out the movies sometimes. I think she also did voice overs for Tom ad Jerry.
What a shame that that house has been more or less abandoned. It certainly is a beautiful house from the outside. What’s that old expression? “Success is the best revenge”. Miss Hattie deserved all her success. What unforgettable characters she portrayed. She brought them to life so beautifully.
Loved it. Thank you.
What a wonderful posting. Such great memories
Thank you for this....very informative.
Great video! Thank you for highlighting the great Hattie McDaniel!
She was an awesome lady thank you!
THANK YOU SO MUCH
MR CLYDE. LOVE THE VLOG. WHAT HISTORY.
