DOOL - Oweynagat (in Session for Re:VERSION)

DOOL is a newly renamed rock formation build around singer and guitarist Ryanne Van Dorst. Van Dorst and her band have been playing for a while under the monicker Elle Bandita but it was not until the arrival of their latest member, guitarist Nick Polak, that the need arose to re-identify themselves as a full fledged rock band: Hence the birth of DOOL. The band's first release is the aptly entitled Oweynagat (the Cave of the Cats). The song takes its name from a cave in Ireland deeply associated with the origin of Sanheim, todays Halloween.

I love it, It's like witchcraft for me. I listen to it for 10 sec and suddenly I'm possesed with this band. This haunting, but powerful melody. that magical voice. And that Style! shivers on my back. For whatever reason, I've been dreaming a lot with the world ending lately. It's pretty scary because I don't realize it's a dream and I'm always afraid seeing everything being destroyed. One day I dreamt the same thing, but in the background I listened to this song (the second half, the instrumental part) and made it even more ominous and terrifying. Since then, Oweynagat gives me even more chills than it did before.

Earlier this year, I kept noticing their records at the store but knew nothing about them. Given the band name and the 'alternative' categorie their CDs were organised into, I was led to associate Tool (wrongly, of course) or, like, some drone doom symphonic noise. I happened upon a show of their's at a festival this early summer and was very surprised by their energy (and how they're absolutely different from whatever I guessed the music could possibly be like from the name alone). I'm left to wonder, though: Does "DOOL" mean anything? I don't feel it fits the atmosphere of their music very much.

Oweynagat. The Irish name for this site is Uaimh na gCat which translates as 'Cave of the Cats'. This is a natural narrow limestone cave with a man-made souterrain at the entrance.
