I have had 1-2 milk cows for years and have picked up quite a few tips from more experienced milkers over time and through trail and error. When you are getting lots of raw milk and selling it, it is nice to keep it fresh as long as possible. 3 things I have done:
    1. Cool jars of milk in the freezer for one hour first, then move to fridge (the faster it is cooled the better)
    2. Use standard canning lids and rings (they will partially seal as it cools and that will keep it fresher)
    3. DON'T use the cream separating idea from your friend. I did that a couple years ago and the freshness of my milk (and cream) really suffered. Especially if you are adding milk to it over more than one milking session.
I have noticed the milk stays fresher much longer if I leave the cream on in the half gallon jars until I am ready to use the skimmed milk. As soon as the cream is removed, the milk sours faster. Nothing wrong with sour raw milk of course, but I love fresh sweet milk the most.
One more tip, use a sharpie to mark your date + AM/PM on the side of the jar. Washes right off. Love your channel, God bless.

Would a little ramp at the end of the milking platform with antiskid applied help Hope get off easier? Sort of like a handicap ramp.
Hope appears to be such a kind, gentle, patient cow. She is a blessing as she is teaching you the ways of being a dairyman. God sent.

I was taught that whenever washing up containers that had dairy products in them you rinsed first with cold water,. Hot water does something that sets up the milk and makes it harder to clean. A quick rinse with cold before dropping everything in the hot soapy water might make your clean up a lot easier. Hope this is helpful.

You need to get a cork to put in the vacuum line if you are going to leave it out . One day you will get a spider or mud dobber in it and you will have a lot of work to fix it. I have been there and done that.

I hand milk, but may have to get a milker one day. Love your set up! We put our milk (quarts) in the freezer for an hour for a quick chill down. The only faster chill is setting them down into ice water. Our milk stays fresh for a long time before it goes to natural yogurt and then clabber (cheese and whey).

Each time I watch you milking the cow it causes flashback to when I was a teenager and milking cows on the farm. Funny story. One cow we milked would sidestep while putting the strap over her back and then lean on you pinning you to the side stantion and she would not let go. She was never mean but had this little trick to catch you when you forgot and got inside with her as we did with all the other cows. We never had a beautiful milkmaid either. Thank you for the memories.

As a youngster back in the 60's, I had to use many of those type milking machines. I had 20 cows to milk every morning before school. We had 5 machines so I milked 5 at a time and all with the strap around the cow. Obviously if you're only milking one cow at a time, you can do it the way you are manually holding the lines. It's when you have to milk multiple cows at a time, that you need the strap. BTW, if you notice, on the handle at the very end is a notch. That's where the machine hooked on the metal loop of the strap.

Great video. I learned how to milk with that particular style of milking bucket at my Uncle's farm as a child. As you said, the buckets were held by a strap over the back of the cow and we moved them from cow to cow. we could get usually 3 cows in each bucket before we had to dump it. We milked jerseys and a couple of Guernsey cows. Uncle had 50 cows so we started early in the morning like 4:30 or 5 o'clock to milk each day. After about 5 years uncle change to the automated system where all of the suction cups were mounted to a free flow system that took the milk directly to the tank. Trucks came to pick it up each day. We still had 2 cows that had to be milked by hand as the machine milkers put too much pressure on the teats. Have a great day and God-bless.

Thanks for the details. Just a suggestion, the line you leave in the stall area may get spiders, etc. in it so you might want to cover it with a cloth and rubber band, and to keep from having to hold the milk lines while milking you could hang a long bungee cord and S hooks to hang the line on.

My grandparents and my uncle (who lived just down the road) both had Surge milkers that they used in their barns. I remember well hearing the pulsating vacuum pumps going, and then carrying the heavy buckets of milk to the "milk house" where the milk was strained into big cans for rural pickup. Ah, the memories!! Thanks for sharing with us all that you do. I admire your courage to break away from the rat race and how you are managing to make it "out there on your own."

I'm so glad to hear you are looking for alternatives for the quail! I have always felt bad that they never get to be outside. In my head I knew that farmers worked very hard with a lot left to chance-environment, weather, choices made, and of course luck. But seeing the care you take for your animals, to be organic, the seeds you buy etc really brings it home. And when I think of the large scale farms that are organic etc, the knowledge passes from my head to my heart. I am so lucky to have grocery stores that offer organic alternatives and a wide variety of choices. And that represents A LOT of hard work and heart. Thanks you guys!

You can either take them outside surrounded by bushes & protection or you can put a fan in the cooler end of the barn down low with an open screened end at the top of the hot end of the barn.

Back in the 60s we milked with a system where the lid fit on one of those tall old fashioned milk cans. If I think there was an inline filter so when the can was full the lid was put on and taken to the milk house and put in a cooler that had ice cold water. My mother had an aluminum can with handle that held around a gallon and she would skim cream off the tops of the cans before it got sold to use for butter etc. I still have that can.

Maybe you can build a small aviary for the quail in a shaded area of your property? Post hole a couple of nice dead trees, and small live ones and a bush for them to roost upon, hide in. That will help them a lot in hot temps. A small coop set inside will help for the winter.

Beautiful work! I loved it! Just a friendly suggestion, Kevin, you may want to use a mask for the time you need to talk or open your mouth while pouring the milk or have the milk containers opened, is something simple that will prevent any saliva or hair from you to your milk and, either spoil the milk or, a hair appears in one of your clients jars which, in a great environment or among friends is just a hair, no problem but, some may not like to see you working without covering your mouth or head, you know, just a precautionary simple action to avoid some to decide not to buy from you when you're doing tremendous work to have this precious liquid!

Thanks for quail update. In S. Ms it's also been incredibly hot & outrageous humidity this year, I located my Quail hutches under a Huge fig tree outside our kitchen/diner rm window. We love hearing the Birds, particularly the Roos in morning.
Doubt we'll ever milk cows for house, but enjoying seeing you'll experience this.
    Thanks for sharing.

Hey Kevin and Sarah just wanted to say thank you as I just purchased Inergy Solar Generator through the link you provided here on this video. They gave a 5% discount using Living Traditions discount. God Bless your Family from upstate New York

Very cool, I loved watching this. Makes me appreciate cows and farmers. I’ve seen a big production dairy before, but this was cool. Thank you for sharing. Give Hope some “good girl “ pats from me.

I have some questions about your great setup. 1) What is the mounting adapter that the inter-pulse pulsator attached to? I have found the pulsator, just not that flat piece that the vacuum pump hose attaches to. 2) What is the typical psi setting for your vacuum pump while running the milker? 3) what is the diameter of your milk tubing? 4) what is the diameter of your vacuum tubing? Thank you. I also really like the customized parts on the vacuum pump with the gauge and hose attachment. That looks super handy. You are an inspiration and I look forward to learning more from both of you!!!

Thanks for this video! I just got a surge bucket and I'm going to refurbish it myself. All my reading was leading me to believe that I needed smaller shells than the ones that came with my bucket. I see you have the C style shells, too, so mine should work for my Jersey.
