I think Scofield really inspires and pushes Warren on his solos. If that's even possible, LOL. Definitely a different feel playing with John vs. Derek.
3 out of 5 stars. Fine players here, one and all. Each good at what they do. Except Scofield, no, he is great, a gifted player, improviser and jazz icon. This collaboration, I'm sure, was well meaning. I would guess the players are honored, if not a little intimated, to jam with one of the most recognizable players in jazz, that'd be Sco. On the other hand Sco digs blues and obviously is not a jazz snob, heck I think he'd jam with Miley Cyrus, which is laudable. However if this tune (an Allman Brothers composition) is typical of the collaboration, and this is the only one I've heard, it falls short to my ears. Sco shines in places but he sounds a little boxed in, maybe disinterested, by the groove and harmonic structure. So in this musical recipe you get a race to the middle, a blend, which suits no one's musical strong suit. The group is playing pseudo jazz and Sco is accommodating them and the music. In the end it sounds OK but unfortunately an unmemorable run of the mill effort.
Larry Pinkerton I’m not sure why you feel blending musical styles together is a bad thing. It’s actually what makes me a fan of the Allman Brothers, Govt Mule and John Scofield. Sounds like you’re being a bit of a guitar snob. I play guitar and I enjoy all kinds of music. This an awesome musical blend of blues, jazz and rock and sounds good to my ears. Warren Haynes and John Scofield have collaborated many times including an album called Sco-Mule. Sco is clearly a better player in terms of musical vocabulary than Haynes, but music isn’t a contest and is meant to be enjoyed and explored. These two guys are clearly having fun doing it.
FREAKIN' FANTASTICAL LOVE IT!!!! Thanks fellas , you rock my world Namaste
ABSOLUTELY OUT OF THIS WORLD MUSIC.
ABSOLUTELY MINDBLOWING
At a loss for words... this is a marvelous meeting of players from two traditions who share a love for improvising. Wow!
Love the bass work too.
very good 😊
Nice little excerpt of the jungle section melody from Duke Ellington’s rockin in rhythm during scofields solo
Amazing
Very good music.
Got to give a thumbs up. Live at its best
Now, that's my kind of jazz!!!!
Warren Haynes would be the most under rated musicians out there. He's outstanding.
if you listen to it on Hittin the Note, this is Oteil's song and he does a great job with it. Jorgen is quite adequate with it here
Blue Matter we’re the good old days
