Warren is one of the best and most accomplished guitar players of our time. He's also one of the nicest guys in the world. A "few" years ago, I was FOH engineer for David Allan Coe, when Warren was playing lead with him. Spent a lot of time with him, working and goofing off. The best memory I have is when we were sitting on the crew bus kidding around about what we really wanted to do. I said something dumb about drinking beer and chasing girls and he surprised me by saying he was going to play with the Allman Brothers. He was dead serious. I thought that if anyone could, it would be Warren. "And the rest is history!" Great guy. Great musician. I'd love to tell him thanks for the cool memories.
Jes, go to any of his concerts once things open up and go stand by his bus after the gig, he always stops and visits with his friends and fans. Or pay for a meet and greet and surprise him.
Thanks for sharing those were great times to lose yourself in , best era and area to live in (Sarasota) Barry Oakley's mom taught my younger brother . It was laid back, pristine in the 70's ... sadly now overpopulated and overdeveloped
Matt Abts is one of my all time favorites.... this guy is incredible! Gzuz, just listen to him during George's solo.... Matt was listening, and in the fk'n Groove......
I saw Gov Mule in 1999 at Piers in Fort Wayne Indiana...and Allen Woody was just phenomenal...his pocket was unparalleled...and of course Warren was ... Well Warren... lol...they were really on that night....I was standing over by Warren's rack of guitars before the show...he came out to talk to his guitar tech and I caught his eye....I said he man love that Les Paul...and he grabbed it and handed it to me and said check it out...😯😯...I almost crapped myself....I took it from him and strummed a few chords...and said yeah it's a beauty and handed it back to him...he said thanks and winked at me....such a cool guy...most of those guys wouldn't give you the time of day...but Warren was just a regular guy who loves guitars like me.....🎸🎸🎸🎸
To me, this song is Warren at his best. He's one of the finest guitar masters of our day. And a helluva singer to boot. This slide solo is just bonkers! I saw Mule live a couple months ago and they went off on a magical journey with this song - probably a good 20 minutes. Oh, and this bassline is the sickest bassline this side of What is Hip?
Warren firstly played with David Allen Coe til Dickey recruited him to join his Dickey Betts band till Gregg Allman wanted to do the Allman Brothers which Dickey wanted Warren to join in with him, towards the end of the Allman Brothers govt mule started as a side project with Matt Abst as far as I know
Saw them at Starlight Theater in Kansas City. Mule opened and absolutely killed it with Thorazine Shuffle with a bunch of modulations. At this time in the tour, there was friction between the two bands. Warren came out to play on the last song and stood behind the Frank Beard. Didn't even go up front. We have a new project called Soul Shine, featuring the music of Warren Haynes. BIG FUN!!
This music - Gov't Mule songs - really is one of the best kept connections to the Glory Days of 70's and 80's Real Rock and the Monster Bands and Talents that dominated the Music scene (before the Music Industry overtook the scene with their branding, marketing, controlling distribution channels, etc). Real Musicianship never gets old. These guys play their tunes in extended form Live - Just like it happened in the 70 - 80's. It works and we love it. Thanks to the Mule for not selling out for the easy money and continue to Rock us today and maintain the Credo of the attitude of Rock and Roll. "We'll do it our way and if you don't like it - DILLIGAF?!"
@@midnightrider715 he can't even remember what he's playing anymore. His last tv special was pathetic! Luckily his son was there to cover for him. Dicky's drinking has finally taken it's toll.
@@midnightrider715 10 years or so. It was really hard to watch, even with Devon covering for him. Dicky has not been the same since he fell off the stage and hurt himself, not to mention his drinking problem which is why he was kicked out of the ABB
Met Matt when they were they were just starting the band. Lurking around the stage while the openers where playing. Still have my signed stik. Met Warren years later. Absolutely incredible musicianship! Rock that Matt! Thanks for inspiring another drummer!
I've been fortunate to see them 9 times.... Never disappointed. Saw them actually blow ZZ Top out of the water when they opened. Tightest show I've ever seen!!!
Can't believe I'm sayin' this...but so focused on George's bassline, can't focus on Warrens slide! Gotta hit repeat....maybe I can the second time around...... Dang, George!!!!! Wearing that bass slap out!
Ohh, yes, I hear ya, Sandra!! This was perhaps the pinnacle of great Bass lines, more than any other Bass player on this tour. The great George Porter, Jr.
The actual bass line, imo, is better than the bass solo...but we know George killed it from the the first note played. My fave song and player of the night. Fuckin' badass P-bass '):

Matt Abts is remarkable drummer... so smooth and dynamic
I know, everyone (rightly) goes on about the guitar and bass but it is the drums that hold this song together.
Matt Abts is one of my all time favorites.... this guy is incredible! Gzuz, just listen to him during George's solo.... Matt was listening, and in the fk'n Groove......
Exactly right! He makes it look so easy.

George Porter Jr. Badass for sure.

as a blues guitarist it doesn't get much better then this!
