Dark Souls was a hidden treasure until players recognised how much different its concept was to other RPG games. The player is set on a lonely journey to overcome the curse of hollowness. Everything in the world is a mystery and needs to be unveiled by talking to NPC's or reading item descriptions. I have read somewhere that Dark Souls is like a fast strategy game in its simple yet challenging combat system, which comes close to your comparsion with the bosses doing moves like chess pieces, and you are able to respond with the tools that you can find in the world (Lordran, Drangleic or Lothric). The best about Dark Souls is that it does NOT give the player the freedom to avoid combat by riding on a horse or to level up the character or weapon by collecting free items in the world to overcome the challenges in the boss fights. A very good example for this is DS3's tutorial boss Iudex Gundyr. If you are unable to beat this boss you are not ready yet to play the game. This 'forces' the player to get familiar with the combat system and overcome a challenge with the only tools you have in the starting area: 3 Estus, your starting weapon, your abilities to dodge and attack.
In Elden Ring the very first boss is the Grafted Scion and I was actually scared at first that this could be a mandatory obstacle to overcome (like Iudex Gundyr) in order to be able to enter the game. In retrospective I must say now: I wish it was. The fact that this fight and basically all of the 165 bosses except around 10 or so are completely optional to beat the game makes the world of Elden Ring and the whole plot kind of meaningless. There is a lot to find and explore in the Land's Between. Only, very little feedback is given to the player as to why one should become Elden Lord? I.e., there are very few interactions in the game that drive the story and makes one feel to be on a journey. It is paradoxical, in the lonely and desperate world of Lordran or Drangleic I feel more at home and see more meaning than in the high fantasy world of Elden Ring.

I feel the same way, the journey through Lordran was meaningful. Every step of the journey meant overcoming obstacles and challenges to reach your goal. It was your personal experience to grow along the way and anytime you got stuck you had to adapt and find your way to victory. In elden ring everything g felt optional and just there as a fan service for those hardcore fans who just wanted hard bosses for the sake if it.
Elden ring is absolutely not a masterpiece, that title belongs still to dark souls.
In dark souls I felt I had to keep going where as in elden ring I felt I just wanted to get through it all in hope to find the same feeling i got in dark souls, it sadly never came.

@@IsidorTheNordicGuy I actually made a test recently to see how many enemies one really needs to kill to beat Elden Ring. I made an incantation build and killed
      2 Leydell knights
      2 tree avatars
and 12 bosses in this order:
Margitt, Godrick, Radahn, draconic tree sentinel, Godfrey 1, Morgott, Fire Giant, Godskin Duo, Maliketh, Gideon, Godfrey 2, Radagon+Elden Beast
(I do not count scarabs as enemies). I reached about level 95 at the end with 30 VIG, 30 MIN and 71 FAI and it was a relatively easy playthrough. This just to demonstrate that Elden Ring just has far too much optional content that can be mostly skipped if you are only interested in beating the game. The first playthrough was great, indeed, due to the fact that there was so much to be explored everywhere. But it is kind of sad that one now knows that nothing of this exploration was actually important for the story or beating the game. What a difference to Dark Souls where the whole world (Lordran) is a consistent combination of different levels which still gives the player the feeling of freedom to go and explore every area even though it is not open world.

You just end up getting knocked off anyway the only thing he’s useful for are the areas you need to jump through those mist things to get to higher points or use him to avoid falling off certain areas. Going to weigh in a bit. The biggest problem I have with this game are the bosses. They feel like a massive step down from the bosses of DS3/DS2/DS1(some) that felt both dynamic and challenging good mix-ups, some delayed attacks but they're not overused and or on the appropriative enemies (mostly humanoids), well-choreographed attacks (everything is avoidable), camera works even with larger bosses, uniqueness. I can't explain it but every boss in Elden ring feels less polished and has cheapness to them, whether it be an overuse of delayed attacks, spammyness, ridiculous combos with much smaller openings for attack, bad camera, and some of the bosses are genuinely weak but that's expected with such the scale they aimed for. The bosses in prior games you could almost "dance" with where you'd learn their move sets and it would be very satisfying to learn the combos and go back and forth with. After I beat a boss in Elden ring the thought that passes my mind is "well that was shit" or "im glad that's over". For reference I haven't beaten the game yet, I've just cleared Lyndell Capital and am running a basic strength build so nothing cheap & I'm also quite good at these games. General Rahadan is one of the bosses I dislike the most, he encapsulates all of the flaws that I stated earlier and feels like a DPS check, can you do enough damage to him before you run out of Estus? He's supposed to be this epic general who has lots of acclaim but instead he feels like a cheap gimmick especially since the developers intended for you to summon to beat him which just trivialises the fight and doesn't give you that challenging 1v1 experience. He's an optional boss so you can come back later in the game and fight, but that also just trivialises the fight since by that time you'll just out damage him. He just lacks the quality and enjoyableness of previous renowned boss fights that are of his calibre. I think the phenomenon that best explains this power creep/bad boss design is how Elden ring has a boss focused weapon meta choice now of broken weapons which didn't exist in previous from soft titles. I'm not saying there wasn't meta weapons in pve, but players weren't reliant on them (although it's somewhat understandable since Elden ring has a bigger audience now) In previous games you could just do fine with the most basic weapons with no flashy high damage gimmick. Other flaws are the repeat dungeons and bosses, generic lore although that's my opinion and probably a few others that could I think of. (Wrote this before I watched the video to see if our points lined up)

exact opposite for me. Bosses in ER was FAAAAAR superior to any other souls game. I was so bored playing 'fan favourites' like Atorias or any other boss. I like aggression and heavy combo movesets that force me to learn tight windows of attack. Elden ring was ABSOLUTELY magnificent in this regard. I'm actually unsure if fromsoft can top these bosses. We'll see in the DLC.

Overall I would agree that elden is not nearly as good as people want or make it out to be, but you want something to stand on, as opposed to personal opinion only. As much as essay as a form is stricly about the author's feelings without any tangable and possible to replicate examples that could serve as proof to what you said some fanboys will just dismiss this and disagree. IT would be good if FromSoft did not commit too such a fuck up of an open world again but... we need to be specific about it as a community and tell them exactly what we want or expect.

Dark souls is a better game, better crafted experience. Still elden ring is overrated and filled with boss design that is broken. It requires more luck than skill most of the time. It says a lot about the gaming market that it is still my favorite game lately. 95% of the games these days hold your hand all the way through, that is why I dont get the praise of all sony exclusives because imo they are shit. Despite elden ring being overrated and designed badly on many aspects it is still miles ahead of any sony exclusive and for that I am at least thankful.

i think a huge problem with Elden Ring is the animations. This issue was briefly made well-known in a roundabout way via Margit's first boss fight at launch and the many memes made about his delays, but so many attacks are just disconnected from their other attacks in the attack chain, and often are either not communicated at all, are nearly entirely unreactable or are practically undodgeable if you aren't fortunate enough to be standing in the right position when they start. It feels deliberately cheap, as if it's just the game having a laugh at your expense.
I can name so many prominent examples:
Magma Wyrm's sword slam into the pull, which takes nearly 5 entire seconds of near immobility to finally hit you with the second part of the attack. This just relies on the meta-knowledge that players will see that as an opportunity to attack
Full-Grown Fallingstar Beast's Jump-slam, which does not have a consistent jump arc and lands so it roll-catches players who are actually paying attention to the physics (not even any gravity magic visible btw)
Hoarah Loux's Grapples, and in particular the one he begins the second phase with. He seriously enters slow-motion just to roll-catch you.
Godrick's Wind Vortex, which is nearly unreactable and has a lingering hitbox.
Banished Knight (shield variant) has a move where they create a vortex and slash you after you're hit with the nearly-unreactable and lingering first vortex
Astel's ground slam; if you're in the red zone, you're nearly guaranteed to be hit by it
Morgott's second fight second phase combo where you nearly can't dodge it at all
    Maliketh's entire deal
Radagon's teleports damage you, and he can often teleport into you
the Commander guarding the second Haligtree piece has a combo into an undodgeable, untelegraphed wind vortex. it took me dozens of times seeing that to realize he does it consistently, it's so untelegraphed. The only counter is running out before he does it.
a Minor example is the dragon's 1-2 bite attack, which looks like the attack chain has ended by the time the second one has started
The Rot and Ice dragon's roars, the former of which makes an incredibly-finnicky-to-dodge massive field of rot, and the latter of which is an entirely unreactable and highly damaging Frost AOE
And others i'm sure i'm forgetting.
I'm not going to elaborate on Waterfowl Dance. You already know.
That's just one of the many problems i have with the game; the consistency of enemies that dodge spells is another, and the sheer amount of busywork to start a new run is yet another. Still, though i'd rank it below the other 2 From games i've player (Sekiro and DS3), i'd still put it in either A tier or B tier.

I like both. From Software took a big risk with this, but I think this is the most true to developer vision we have seen from them because Ds1, 2, and 3 were all cut content. And Bloodborne was really short. We should wait until dlc as well to truly say. Because Old Hunters, Crowns, Artorias, and the two from Ds3 really amped those ones up. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Elden Ring's dlc just decimates.

Right, i watched the video, it's great! But i could definitely tell that you were deeply frustrated by elden ring and i feel like that dominated some of your points or at-least overshadowed them. However, i do not blame you because i feel the EXACT same way you do.
My history with dark souls is complicated. My first fromsoft experience was dark souls 2, and i was so bad that i always cheated. I cheated stats and other conveniences like not losing souls on death. It took away massively from the experience of achievement but i was young, perhaps only 15 years old or so. Obviously, playing this way is boring and i gave up.
But then, i bought dark souls 3, kicking a cheating habit is hard, but dark souls 3 presented its challenges in ways that were so fascinating and engaging that i decided that i was going to master the game by cheating 'lightly' as i ignorantly called it back then. I had my favourite weapons which were always curved swords or katanas, i played only two handed with light armour, and i farmed bosses over and over again. I farmed them so much that i gained a level of mastery and confidence, of course, i was still cheating with extra stats, etc. But one day, magic occurred, the game fucking clicked and i totally got it and that day was the best day of my life.
I finally steeled myself for a cheatless lets play of the game, the supposed intended experience and the raw sense of achievement i felt was indescribable and then i realized that dark souls 3 changed my life. It made me realise that if you simply don't give up, if you are willing to do anything and everything to overcome adversity and if you can eventually integrate Honour and a Noble attitude to it (by not cheating lol), you will feel like you can achieve anything in the real world.
Playing dark souls 2 with all the things i learned from dark souls 3, it became a breeze and suddenly, all the complaints that people made about dark souls 2 being 'bad' seemed irrelevant to me, because i got gud, and when you're good at something, the bad qualities of that game are significantly less noticeable.
Playing dark souls 1 presented its own set of challenges, but overcoming them now not only invokes the same sense of achievement, but its so enjoyable to be immersed in a world where anything could instantly kill you, including the world itself. At any moment, i could lose my souls, that is the challenge, the challenge of managing this stress, the stress of ensuring you do not go hollow yourself and resort to cheap tactics.
Elden Ring? What challenge did it invoke? None... It was just an annoying game through and through, i resorted to playing Elden Ring Reforged on Master Mode just to make the game so ridiculously hard that it was actually enjoyable. Master Mode is a setting that can be enabled at a grace post-installation of the mod, and it challenges you so heavily that it made me feel like i was playing dark souls 1/3 again, the world became risky to explore and bosses were just so far from push overs. The fact that i had i install a mod to make Elden Ring playable saddens me deeply, and the fact the mod developer called it 'Master Mode' rather than 'Dark Souls 1 Mode' also saddens me.
People who play Elden Ring first will never be able to truly appreciate the raw difficulty and emotional challenge of Dark Souls 1, 2 and 3. Just like you, i am so passionate about these games, and watching Fromsoft fall from grace is ironically (pun intended) depressing.

If elden ring was just legacy dungeons stacked on top of each other I wonder if it would feel better. none of the procedurally generated dungeons no torrent. Also I hate to break it to you but every single complaint you have about balence and cheese and summons has always been the case in from soft games. You wanna talk op? I can still here the darkbead in my nightmares. Great video

There are no procedurally generated dungeons. But yeh, The dungeons are so repetitive with copy-pasted stuff, that they feel like procedurally generated.

I just beat ds3 this last week for the first time. Coming from ER at first was a little different to get used to but I became hooked fast and I will say that it by far is in my top 5 favorite games of all time. I absolutely will remember a few of those bosses till the end of time.

such a good and well put together essay! well done. I love Elden ring but as I've only played a bit of demon souls remake maybe I'm missing the point of souls even though Elden ring sounds like much more built upon on paper... the points you bring up makes me want to go back and see why so many people feel this passion for it. I can't say I'm that passionate about Elden ring but the way you talk about dark souls like a experience sounds very amazing and special!??..maybe 😮‍💨😂...imo

The open world cannot be utilized because of this leveleing mechanic you talked about, which is pretty sad imo.
For example I started my 2nd playthrough and killed margit and godrick right off the bat without exploring limgrave really, then I went directly to the altus plateau because I wanted to skip rennalla because I didnt feel like going there.
First off all the Draconic Tree sentinel was a huge damage sponge, I mean obviously he would be I was only level 30, I was doing essentially a challenge run. But at the same time, why call it an open world game if I still have to go to margit, then godrick, then rennalla to be at an appropriate level for the capital.
And even better, I did beat Draconic Tree sentinel at level 30 and basically completely mastered that guy and breaking his stance all the time, but the thing is the doors of leyndell dont even open before you have 2 lord souls!
Why is it an "openworld" game if first of all it level gatekeeps you and second even if the level gatekeep isnt enough for you because you are good enough the game Literally gatekeeps by putting a magical barrier around the entrance of leyndell gatekeeping you.
Of course I know why they had to segment areas with levels and enemy HP and damage values so the game wouldnt turn out to be a boring mess if every area had the same enemy level and HP values.
And of course if you are not a "veteran" or so called "good" player. Then the leveling system also can destroy balance depending on how you play the game which could take away from the difficulty as you said and kinda go against the design philophies from previous fromsoft games.
Lets just hope that Eldenring is used as a gateway game for people to get into souls games and the next will not have these issues, but many people will buy the next game because they got "softened" to fromsoft games through eldenring.

You said exactly what I think as well. I'm very worried about the future of fromsoftware games now which is a huge shame as they are one of the few good Dev teams left.. Elden ring is not bad but it's simply lackluster compared to dark souls.. I'm glad you saw the problems as well. I really hope you subscribe to the channel! I made other souls videos

Dark Souls 3 is 95% Demon's Souls mixed with Dark Souls. PS5 launched with Demon's Souls remake. Nice graphics but lost somewhat the "soul". Elden Ring is just too ambitious. FromSoftware's latest success lead in the wrong direction. Remember SONY's ps3 launch after stomping Microsofts xbox in the dust? It was a disaster! Simply too ambitious. Hope From get's back to track like Sony did with their ps4. I had to stop playing Elden ring after 10 hrs.

The salt is real, complains that people are crazy for farming but doesn't acknowledge the fact that farming is a choice for most people we know we don't have to but some of us choose, I think he hates this game just because he's no good at it, the one thing I'll agree about is torrents mechanics but other than that I don't mind elden ring not saying it's better than something like Demon's Souls

  • @Disconnis

Gotta agree, Elden Ring is the most overrated game of the year in my opinion, and one of the most overrated games ever.
Not impressed by visuals, open world, multiplayer, or quest structure at all. Could be that I just need to "git gud" to get it though.
I think the art style is fantastic don't get me wrong, but that's all I feel it has going for it in my opinion and obviously I'm in the minority here.
Same with my opinions that Kojima games and Resident Evil 4 is WAY overrated too but that's not something most people are going to agree with either. That's a whole another topic though.

@@milkymark6850 Yes I've tried playing it 3 times on three different consoles and dipped out at about the same point every time - near the beginning when the dynamite-throwing villagers start slowly sauntering toward you in endless numbers. Completely immersion-breaking and the godawful controls made me wanna bash my head into a wall.
Again that's just me though and is obviously a very unpopular opinion.
I'll maybe get further in the game to give it a fair chance some day, if I can numb my brain enough to persist.
