Thank you so much for this video. Im going to give this a shot with my 1yr 1mo Cane Corso. Hes so big and loves people so much, he gets way too excited when greeting people. Ive tried so many methods and nothing has rectified his manners. Now that hes 140lbs, hes harder to control and more dangerous running up on others. Appreciate real life problem solving videos!!
The problem it's not training the puppy the problem it's making the guest stops talking in a baby high pitch voice and give him pets every time he jumps and make him really over exited. It's cute when they're little but not so much when they weigh 40 kg
I told my guests for the first few months of having my puppy to just ignore the dog when they come over. Once the dog is quiet and calm then the guests can pat them. It's really not that hard. Guests gets to play with the puppy and puppy gets training.
I love watching and learning from these videos and Carol is so clear with her instruction. My dog was diagnosed with a “processing” disorder by a specialist in Boston. Unfortunately, she becomes so totally overwhelmed with excitement when guests are in our home (or other new and interesting stimulation) that nothing, not even her favorite high value treats, can get her to focus. The doctor told me this would never go away but…I am still working on training. After two years of her being terrified to get in the car and vomiting on trips from anxiety she now jumps right in and is excited to go places. My training was persistent and consistent over a long (and frustrating) period of time. I will try this method you have shown us here and maybe over time I can get her to be more calm with guests.
Instructor Carol! Once again, you show us training strategies that are practical and effective! Love being a McCann's student and the learning just never ends! -Erica ❤🥰
This is great! Just in time for my parents’ first visit to my meet my 6mo puppy who definitely loves jumping on people :) thank you! Fingers crossed we succeed🤞
Loved the video. My concern is our 8 mos old weimeraner will not settle in her crate in the other room. She will bark, cry and pant. And she has incredible endurance!
Thank you!!! This has been our biggest struggle. Starting in the crate will hopefully help us start off on the right foot! Can't wait to give this a try and give her the slow start to keep her level head.
Love your philosophy and implementing all advice over months. Even studied your videos before I adopted brother/ sister black lab mixes. One is easy to train, 2? Like 5 rambunctious kids😳 Please do videos using 2 puppies🙏🏼, please???
My 8 month old Cavapoo pees when she she's people she doesn't know, (if they get close to her). I know some breeds do this and grow out of it, but it makes it very challenging to acclimate her. I'm going to try distracting her with her favorite "high value chicken treats." And I'll try bringing her into the room after company has arrived. (I had her in her crate in the same room before but she always peed as soon as I let her out & the guest tried to pet her....even after I took her outside to potty!) I've been asking my guest to meet her outside after she's had her potty, but if didn't help. Thx Carol for this new tip!!
The thing is I cannot think of any guest I might have be they a plumber for e.g. or a social guest who will wait for me to calm my dog down . They want me to answer questions, to greet them, etc not ignore them and focus on my dog. I end up putting my dog on the screened porch and warning the grandkids not to go out there for a while. As soon as I can I go out there with my dog, I give him a treat if I can’t let him in yet or throw a ball to disperse some energy before I let him around my guests . Often if it is family, a big person will go out on the porch to greet him and let him. Wind down a bit before meeting kids or ladies who are all dressed up. The McCann method seems to ask a lot from the guests.
Does this work for an older dog? We have an Airedale Terrier who is 3 years old. We inherited her from a family member with a baby that couldn’t handle her. We have a lot of elderly (80s) neighbors that don’t want to be jumped on by a big dog. I’m not sure how to break her of this habit.
Any tips on calming an excitable puppy who is going out with the dog walker? Understandably the dog walker doesn't have 15+ mins to wait for me to calm him down as I normally would with other guests. I am considering stopping the twice weekly walk because it is counter productive to my usual 'guests visiting' training. My puppy is a 6 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback. He is SUPER excited when visitors come and it's perceived in a worse light, because of his size. He is alot stronger and larger than the puppy in this video so is quite a handful. I am working on lowering his excitement levels, managing the introduction like in this video, although sometimes I just decide to leave him in the crate if that is the best solution for that vistor. I would leave him in the crate for the excitement level we get when the dog walker comes, but he has to go along, so ultimately gets rewarded for incorrect behavior or rushed training.
If you can start 10 mins or more before the Walker gets to you. Also go through the "dog walker" routine on days when they aren't expected so your pup is not anticipating. It's amazing how quickly they pick up our subtle routines and use it against us😉 Good luck
@@infin8ee Thank you, this is really helpful, especially about going through the specific dog walker routine when they're not coming. Unfortunately, they don't always come at the same time so it is REALLY difficult to get him mentally ready beforehand. For the time being I have cancelled the dog walker, done some 1:1 work with a trainer. We are due to join group sessions and group walks soon as I'm concentrating on his focus being on us whilst he's around other dogs in a calm state, rather than on always trying to play with other dogs. I think for now this will work better than him going with the dog walker; because I will be there to train him.
@@SimplyIntoMyNAILS I think that you are onto the right path. It's so difficult at times when you have an active youngster. I have found that the advice given by McCann's is on point and easy to follow. I wish you all the best and heaps of fun with your pup❣️
Hi. I have 4 weeks old puppy and i want to know if it is okay (and does it even makes sence) to start training. Will puppy be able to learn anything? (Btw i love your videos❤❤)
How do you even have a 4 week old puppy? Unless you own the mum too? At least here in the UK its illegal to buy a puppy under 8 weeks, some breeders wait til 12 weeks til they can go home
This is great but I have an 8lb poodle and there is no way he's going to take that many treats! All our training is challenged because of that. He really likes to jump on the grandchildren and they don't like it.
I enlisted friends to help. They’d come over and we asked them to just ignore our dog for the first ten minutes. We had them turn their backs to him. Now when people come over he turns on his back and hopes they will scratch his belly. Lol. He’s 8 months old. We didn’t use treats at all. 🤷🏻♀️
I like the method but it's not really practical when you have a visitor you can't ignore them for a while to correct your dog's behavior, and I am sure it can be easier and faster using a gentle correction with a prong collar or e-collar

Completely agree, if guests do that to our puppy and she jumps, tbh I just say "you asked for it!".

Please suggest something for my 8 months old Labrador who do his dog business in house backyards n never outdoors …Thanks n love from Melbourne 💕
I don’t have any guests, just more dogs. Carol says YAAS just like Kayl. Must be a Canadian thing
What a beautiful Toller!
yup but ours is a 30kg vizsla which is a tad more dangerous than an aussie shepard jumping hopefully this helps
I do this but my dog keeps barking and making crying noises all the tike when guests are over

To much Treats, dogs should be able to do that training with out many treats.
