The heresiarch should have been the final boss, riding korax as a mount. Just like d'sparil rode his chaos serpent. Korax looks like some monster you would keep in a pit and feed prisoners to. Not an evil magical demon overlord.
I read somewhere that Korax was supposed to be the serpent and the Heresiarch the rider. But due to time constraints they ended up use each as a separate boss instead.

There was a little bit of speculation about the heresiarch being the original design for korax, maybe at some point they changed it.
