- Getting My Careel 18 Trailer Sailer ready for sailing in Sydney and Pittwater with a special emphasis on how I rig my Careel, raising and lowering the mast by myself.
It is also the 50th Anniversary that these great little boats went into production.
Special /thanks to Vern and Ray of the Careel Association who made up my mast raising system.
I'm really enjoying your videos. Very practical and helpful. Thank you.
Greetings Nick, I recently purchased a Careel 18 #235. Enjoyed all your videos a lot! First time I raised my mast down the same as you did, but seeing sliding support I made one. Works well, thanks for all your advice. Cheers Stephen from Hervey Bay
Nick - really enjoyed your videos - great little Careel
Would love to see an in-detail rigging of the Careel 18 at the ramp. Would that be an option for a future video? Similar to what RUclips channel “Sailing Kate Louise” did. I like the Careel 18 for the furling jib and furling boom.
Great video, I am looking at buying a careel18 soon and will be solo mostly so very interested in your mast set-up, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for a very informative video. I am considering such a boat, and stepping up to a bigger rig is kind of daunting! You make it look easy.
Gday, mate. how racked back do the careel 18 masts gotta be? trying to rig mine (414). The shrouds stop the mast going 90 degrees. I understand that some rack is required, but maybe not this much? The forestay is loose as, connected it to something on furler. (Don't even know if correct. No information anywhere. Currently trying to zoom into every rigged C18 i can find.) The aft forestay is 150mm too short. I have just bought her and don't understand how it could be so off. I cant adjust the forestay with length trim. I have just sent my application too. There is no information about this kinda stuff online. must be mostly word of mouth.
Hi Mossy, opinions vary but level up the boat to her water line, if no water line anymore float the boat in is normal rigged up state and hang a plum bob off the top rear of the mast, the plumb bob should sit between 1 and 3 inches behind the mast at the deck
Sory, I just read a reply you posted but one further question, how do you attach the baby stays to the mast, is it via the mast track and do you use a sail slide? Thanks Bob
Hi Nick. Video informative and enjoyable. Thanks from England!
Thanks for sharing this video.
Great to see the RANSA shirt👍
I have very fond memories of sailing Tasars and a few stints as crew on the Swarbricks.
Guessing by your line handling skills you're or were seamanship department.
Great looking Trailer sailer.
Cheers
Dear Mick, thank you for these really informative Careel videos. I would greatly appreciate a step by step rigging video as I have recently purchased a Careel Mk3 that does not appear to have been fully rigged. EG: It has no topping lift and has a halyard coming out of the front of the mast (for a spinnaker/). Anyway, it's been some years since I've sailed a Careel, so such a video, containing different approaches/opinions if possible) would be very helpful.
I Rachael, I know your boat and some of your challenges you have had. Happy to do a video for you also happy to chat, Vern and Ray have my number. Kind Regards Nick
From San Antonio, TX, thanks for posting this great video! If possible, would you please post a pic of the the slider, where support tubes attach. Thanks!
Hi Darrel, I am going to do a more detailed tour of the boat soon and I will include a picture of the fitting.
Hey Nick, So pleased to find your video. My brother and I have a Careel 18 and are trying to make a mast raising system. If possible can you give me details of the whole system, it would be of great assistance. Thanks Bob
Hi Bob, I will try and make a more detailed video of the components to my mast raising system, but my system was made for me by stalwarts of the Careel Association Vern and his mate Ray. They are contactable through the Careel Association otherwise you can see my update shortly.
wilsnich02 Hi Nick, thanks very much I appreciate that, I’m am on the Careel web site so will check. I’ve had a close look at your video and can get the gist of how you’ve done it. Our boat seems an earlier version so some differences . I’ve started this morning to gather the bits needed. I’m sure the community would appreciate a video if you do get the time, it would be good to get a close look at the connections as hats not so evident. Anyhow don’t stress please , I think I can crack on with it now I’ve seen your video, and compliments it’s well done. Cheers Bob
Some interior photos would be nice. Is it big enough for one person to do an overnight sail?
Hi Colin, I will soon do another video and properly cover the interior, but to answer your question Second Wind has 4 7 foot berths.
I maybe doing a overnight race in another Careel next month where there will be 4 of us on board (3 would be better).
Great video thanks Nick. It brought back many fond memories of my old Careel 18 which I sailed everywhere from the Gippsland Lakes to Myall Lakes in NSW. Nice rigging system too - I had to do it all by hand.
Thanks Mark..... Because the CareeI was fortunate enough
Because the Careel’s were so popular and still have such a strong class association I was able to get a lot of help for my mast raising system which was made up for me by Careel stalwart Vern Mould and his mate Ray. No point reinventing the wheel on such a tired and tested boat
I've just got a careel.
Can you please share some information on gin pole dimensions and side stays / braces
I had the whole system made up for me by two fellows from the Careel Association about 3 years ago and since posting that video last month two of my Careel buddies are getting the same raising system made up for them.
The Gin Pole is approx. 60mm aluminum tubing and about 1600mm in length (63 inches). The A Frame poles are about 30mm Aluminum tubing and 1500 mm in length.
Log onto the Careel Association and join up, lots of help and information available plus fun times...
Great system
Hi Nick, the info on the mast raising system was very good for us “couch sailors”, who haven’t yet taken the plunge on a trailer sailer. Would be interested to see more on the swing keel system, and how comfortable the Careel 18 would be for a weekend camp out.
Hi Greg, thanks for the comments. In the next video I am going to do a boat tour including the interior and the upgrades done to the boat. I will have a talk about the centre plate as their have been evolutionary upgrades to the Careel's swing keels across their 20 + year production run and the different raising systems Careel's have used.
Hi Greg, sounds like a good idea, I do get a lot of questions about my A Frame and my mast raising system that a good friend of mine made up from me and is today doing a slight modification to the mast crutch. I am a subscriber and avid watcher of Sailing Kate Louise and in general follow Raid Sydney, so I will revisit that episode of SKL. I have just pulled the centreboard out and refurbished it, boat should be ready hopefully by the end of school holidays so that will be my next video fingers crossed.
@@wilsnich02 btw you’re a ‘doppelgänger’ for my little brother. Wonder if there is a family connection?
