In this episode of MakeMineMusic, Marc Daniel Nelson reviews BlackBird Studio and Kit Audio’s Pro Tools plugin, BBN105. This plugin is a faithful recreation of the legendary Neve 8078 in studio A at BlackBird in Nashville, Tn.
The Neve 8078 was the last of the "80 series" hand-wired analogue mixing consoles designed and manufactured by Neve Electronics, founded in 1961 by the English electronics engineer Rupert Neve, for high-end recording studios during the 1970s. Some were custom built for major studios like CBS Sony.
Considered to be the ‘holy grail’ of recording consoles and Neve’s most desirable mixer, the 8078 traditionally contains varying numbers of input channels via 31105 microphone/line preamp and EQ modules. These discrete modules feature 438 and 440 amplifiers, and use the same 10468 mic transformer and 31267 line transformers as the Neve 1073s. The EQ features 4-bands with high and low-pass filters, shelving select, Hi-Q select and phase switching.
Only a limited number of the 8078 consoles were made with just a handful remain in working condition and are still used, making them incredibly valuable. The consoles can be used for mixing, signal boosting via mic/line preamps, levelling, EQ and also track summing, making them suitable for a wide variety of projects. Some consoles have been built with a varying number of input and mixing channels to facilitate projects of different sizes, ranging from 28 up to 72 input channels.
The Neve 8078 will impart the expected vintage, warm tones of Neve and bring bold, smooth character to audio signals that are processed. Neve consoles and sound, such as that of the 8078, have featured on classic records by artists including Pink Floyd, Quincy Jones, Nirvana, Beastie Boys, Foo Fighters, Dire Straits and many more.

We cannot underestimate how pristinely recorded those instruments are, even without the Neve.

I agree. When listening to the unprocessed tracks in Marc's video, it's plain to hear that the song is incredibly well recorded. Martina McBride as singer, awesome studio musicians playing and John McBride as engineer. There's so much musicianship, taste and a stellar level of skills involved in cutting these tracks. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to work with these multitracks, but I bet you just load them into your DAW and 85% or more of the mix is already there.
It speaks even more for the quality of the Channel Strip Plugin from KIT Plugins, since it is still able to refine the sound and take it to the next level.

Gosh !!!. .. The 3D Depth you hear at 14:45 when A/B'ed is just insane.. It's like a sheen of reverb added on to the Snare tops & the Tambourines ... Sounds like a Amazing Emulation ... Looks like Kit Audio has nailed it in the head !

Wow, sounds very nice. I'm sure a new shiny plugin isn't the only thing that makes this sound so good. I'm sure it was tracked with the best microphones, best musicians etc.
The Lindell Audio 80’s series is my go to for these same reasons. It’s amazing what can be done ITB now.

Wow, I gotta say usually RUclips doesn't really let the true sound of things come thru especially for critical listening stuff, but I can honestly say that the before and after of what this plug in is doing is really amazing. And looking at how much the EQ is doing (with only little boost) is waking the sound up. I am downloading V2 now to demo it and probably add it to me collections. Thx for sharing.

Not sure about the plug in, but one thing is for sure... add some Cuervo Gold and a fine Columbian cigar... it will make the night a wonderful thing.
I did have some issues with the demo but since the update I've had no problems. All my other Neve plugins have gone into retirement because this just sounds amazing

I like the free Burier plugin from Kit Plugins a lot to add some weight to drums and bass and make vocals stand out more. Seems like Kit Plugins will come up with some more high quality, great sounding plugins in future. Can't wait to try the 8078 out.
Once again, great overview, Marc! I watched your review on Monday. I have been running the demo for a few days now. Gotta say the EQ is butter. Especially in the mids and highs. The low end EQ is especially nice on material or tracks that are a little thin in the bottom end. Also, I think you commented similar in your vid... I found that the EQ, even when fully boosted, doesn't exhibit the harshness or digital aggressiveness that other plug-ins do, sometimes.

Spine-chillingly good production Marc ( plugin or not). The emotion expressed, and now captured forever, in this wonderful song is as pure as I've ever heard. I'm a mere amateur. Bought your wonderful session on mixing Eric Burden and learned so much about subtly and nuance, the shadows in the mix. Thanks so much for sharing your passion for art and helping people like me to grow ever further into our love of music.

If I may add my one and a half cents worth... First, I'm 72 years old and all those years in bands and in the studio have left my ears in a sorry state, so what I hear may not be what is really there. So there's that. RUclips usually ruins the audio on videos posted here but to me this sounded really good, especially in the low end. But these ears could actually hear the subtleties in the processed and bypassed sound and that's impressive for them.
The thing I love most about this video, aside from the sweet dog in the background, is the breakdown in the various parts that make up the arrangement, especially in the guitars and pianos. I'd love to see a video of just this song related to the mixing process, how things were balanced and put in the sound field, etc. I'm especially impressed in how much low end there is in the piano yet it doesn't clash with the bass guitar. I'd love to see that video. One other thing I noticed was there was some, well, not "plosives" but in Martina's "B's"...would you call them "blosives"? I assume that the thinking is they will disappear in the mix, and they actually do. Back in the '60s we always used to hear the producer say "we'll fix it in the mix". Still true today? All in all, the parts of the full mix that were played were huge; a really great sound.
That's all I got. I love your videos. Now go give that sweet puppy a good belly rub for me.

The plug in sounds good, with tracks recorded so well it’s easy to add that extra small % of greatness. It sounds like a great plug in but I’d prefer to have that 8078 in my room over ITB.

How many kilowatts in air conditioning would you need though. The 8128 I used had that toasty 4.5 kW feeling. There are better ways to undress :D

I had to stop and go listen to the song, and wow, what a great recording. Neves have a special place in my heart since my first exposure to a real studio was when I took a recording course in the late '80s and their console was a Neve, but I don't remember the model number. They were still on 2" tape at that time, so that was a whole thing we had to learn, but I digress. I'm sure this new plugin will be great, but probably not any more magical than any of the many great console plugins already in existence. I know what he means by that "3D sound", though - it's always something to strive for. Thanks for the demo.
Im not gonna lie - I watch all of Marcs vids simply for the music half the time.... I think you could load these tracks into the original version of cakewalk from the 90s and it would sound simply gorgeous!

I tried the demo plug-in out today on some of my acoustic guitars , well recorded with tube mics.
To be really honest it didn’t turn me on . This is definitely a taste thing . Wasn’t for me. I’m sure there is a lot of people will love it .
I like that Mark can sound profound and introspective, but still lets the Chicaaaago accent take the stage when he gets cheeky.

Plugins seam to be getting better and more realistic all the time. The one thing that few plugin developers seam to consider is the subtle differences between each channel. I believe that Plugin Alliance is the only developer that brings these subtle differences to their channel strips! On most plugins, if you use the same one across the whole mix, it sounds a little sterile. I feel that's what's missing, when mixing in the box, all those subtle differences across the mixing board. Go, Plugin Alliance!
Believe it or not, Cakewalk by bandlab, a full featured free DAW actually has a feature within its console emulation, which is built right into the program in which you can press a tolerance button on each console emulator and it assigns slightly different parameters to each channel. And again this is a free program.
That’s not the case with Waves NLS

When I woke up this, I certainly thought I had enough Neve plugins. I was wrong. I look forward to testing this up against Acustica Gold and Navy. Now Warren and Marc, how about getting these multi-tracks approved for the Academy? ;) :)
I’ve never been able to achieve any significant saturation / distortion with Acustica Gold. Is there something I’m missing?
@@mattevans1427 You're not missing anything. I find the Acustica plugins give a certain depth and width compared to the others I have, but they lack in saturation. With what I heard in the demo here, we may be able to get both now.
