Have you ever been at Fernando's museum, in Spain? He has all his amazing helmet collection there, so I'd bet your helmet is there as well. Despite I live near it, I haven't been there in a while. It's worth a visit for any motorsports fan. All his F1 cars are there, the helmets, and I think he also has the 2017 Indy 500 car and his Le Mans winning Toyota.
I'm honestly surprised there doesn't seem to be any utub video of somebody taking medieval weapons or whatever to modern racing helmets and seeing how they perform.
Wow, I actually learned something, never noticed those details on the helmets! Edit: this might read as sarcasm but that wasn't intended, you actually put out good videos
Coming from a powersports background and owning dozens of helmets still, this is fascinating. They evolve like motorsports and the drivers themselves. It's funny how they serve as tokens of time/place/people as well. A driver may not know his wife's bday but, if you point to a random helmet off his shelf he'll know the PSI of the right rear of the car he was in when he wore it. Even if it was decades ago.
Excellent video. I worked for Bell racing in 1997, and built myself an Indy spec helmet. The advancement is amazing to me….didn’t realize all the changes! Thanks

Another weird thing about the Arai spoilers, or helmet spoilers in general, is that they're also not allowed in the USF ladder. I am in F4/FR US championships and they don't really care, but some friends in USF were told to remove it for safety reasons which I thought was a bit weird to hear. besides that even for the lower sides of the ladders for guys like us, our helmets are pretty simple like the F1 ones, just aero elements to keep your head straight and tearoffs
Yeah that’s because the road to indy series try to follow IndyCar safety rules as much as possible. I wasn’t allowed to wear the arai wing in Indy Lights either
Thanks for the great video Conor! It actually made me think about the DTM helmets from like the 2000s and 2010s where I believe they also used the air hose on the top of their helmet

Spare no expense when it comes to buying a helmet. Ten dollar helmet- ten dollar head! I saw your father race when he was driving the Nissan GTP cars which was a great series.
As important as aerodynamics are in racing, it never crossed my mind about the helmet in open cockpit until a friend let me drive his Radical and all I had was my GT helmet. At 120-130mph it felt like I was hanging from the gallows, so I could only imagine what it would be like at nearly double that speed.
Absolutely live this type of content. I would definitely like to see more. Go talk to Borris Said about sponsor dollars, he was the king of finding money! You belong in Indycar!
I didn’t realize helmet aero was so important but it makes sense with the open cockpits. I hate a stuffy car I can’t imagine how rough it is with the new Indycar endurance races
10:16 Any chance could it be related to the "square edge helmet ban" that was put into effect after the 1996 season? Bell & Simpson got into a heavy aero design war during that time period on trying to have the most aero-efficient helmet for the 500 + other large speedways
The the rear wing was for the same reason as the front bit, to stop the helmet from moving around too much. But drivers started using it less because of the Halo. Though some current drivers still have it
The front piece always did wayyyyy more than the rear wing. As someone who has worn all of these different pieces hah. In the end driver preference is important but certainly in F1 the team wants maximum aero efficiency
I love how different F1 and INDYCAR helmets and cars are different in a technical sense, and maybe F1 and the FIA can incorporate the air hose for extra ventilation, which would allow them to race in hotter climates such as Qatar or Singapore
They don’t need the ventilation they have an open cockpit? We get zero air. The air hose wouldn’t do anything for them because they already get max air flow. They just can’t hydrate enough because that would mean they become too heavy for the teams
I was the open wheel sales rep for Impact Racing back in the early/mid 2000's. Did Bell pay you a salary to wear their helmets? Or just supply them for free? I was at Milwaukee (can't remember what year) and talked to Danica about switching to our helmet. See wore Bell helmets. She told me Bell paid her a yearly salary ( I think see said something like 13K a year) in addition to supplying her free helmets. I told Bill Simpson that and he said there was no way he would "pay" a driver to wear our equipment. Just curious. Thanks.
I definitely don’t get paid and certainly don’t think any indycar drivers get paid to wear helmets. But I personally get a certain number of free helmets. Back in the day drivers could get paid though I assume
Great video, couple of questions. How much liquid can be placed in a pouch, can it be refilled during the race, and can the liquid be frozen then put in the pouch during a pit stop so it isn’t boiling when the drivers drinking it?
It’s really just the size of a camelback pack. So not massive. And no it can’t be refilled. What you start with is all you got. Usually it’s frozen before the race, yes. If not it’s boiling within 10 minutes normally.
Wow thanks for this, definitely learned something and the details between the two!! Are these off the shelf helmets then the aero and hydration items added? Or are these helmets supplied to Indy and F1 teams fitted with said items?
These are both the bell hp7 right? I just got mine painted with matte paint, I’m scared to use it I don’t wanna ruin the paint😂 astoundingly how light these helmets are, you really need to hold it to appreciate it. Thank you for the video I didn’t know all these differences and the fact you cant use the stabilizing wing in Indy is weird
But what about GT3 helmets, i wanna see the diffrences of Indycar helmets and maybe GT3 helmets also your welcome for the free video idea i know its hard to think off
well that would be because i dont really have any gt3 helmets! only one that i used this year but there is nothing unique on it honestly. just a radio. so not a ton of detail to explain.
So when do we get the quick clip on shade for those evening IndyCar races on the late summer ovals? With the need for tear offs gone and a stagnate cockpit it shouldn't need much more than magnets in the hinge area. Pass it in an a stop and snap it on for a run.
Yeah sometimes indycar drivers will wear a tinted tear off to start a race. But this year we really only had Milwaukee maybe wear something like that would have come into play
Carlos still has an aero device that sweeps past the back still, actually both Ferrari drivers do. Max and Sergio have strange protrusions at the top of their helmets for , what looks like, ventilation and directing the air over their heads to mesh with the RB aero flow around or into the scoop behind them.
That is all tunable to the size of the drivers head of course. But that would be hard for me to explain because technically it all would look the same haha.
Conner during the last F1 race during the practice they said to cover the holes due to cold or too much air ( to cold). What holes in the hermit’s? Did you give the temps in F or C. At the track? They should show both and make them say it in F. In the USA for 3 races. Mph and F. We don’t do kph or C. Hinch calling out about the cold. To funny. I am in New England 50 is nice out door working weather.
honestly never really had to worry about ventilation at all. the hottest races were still hot but those races now are almost debilitating with the aeroscreen heat
They’re actually not. I raced nascar several times in my career. Safety standards are lower but there really isn’t anything unique other than the air hose
How much driver preference comes into effect for the winglets and aero pieces? do the teams, the helmet manufacturer or the drivers decide which ones they make? Also with the rear wing, is it also an optional thing with the arai ones?
It’s driver preference at a place like the indy 500 before the aero screen. In f1 it’s more team controlled for aero reasons but the driver will have a bit of freedom to move things around to make sure their heads aren’t flying away. The arai rear wings can’t be used in indycar but can in f1
À lot of the differences on the helmets comes from the Halo vs windshield solutions. But what solution do you prefer? For me, the windshield always looked awkward and seem inconvenient for the drivers (heat, visibility…). Would you prefer Indycar to run with halo or do you like the windshield solution? Thanks for the video.
I hate the windshield. I think halo does everything necessary. But yes of course maybe there is a tiny bit more safety with windshield but the trade off is terrible cockpit temperatures
It definitely changed after the aeroscreen. It's so hot in the cars now that you actually retire the helmet more because the interior for me at least gets so salty and nasty! But thankfully we are lucky to get a few helmets so you just space them out during the year. me personally I always retire my Indy 500 helmets after the race. they are special ones. Sometimes I've used them again but not normally

They should show both and make them say it in F. In the USA for 3 races. Mph and F. We don’t do kph or C. Hinch calling out about the cold. To funny. I am in New England 50 is nice out door working weather.
Yeah it was so cold in Vegas that for sure they would have to seal the helmet vents. Too much cold air can make your eyes water
Pre aero-screen how efficient were ventilation in the helmets in terms of how hot it got in the car?
honestly never really had to worry about ventilation at all. the hottest races were still hot but those races now are almost debilitating with the aeroscreen heat
You should try to get your hands on a NASCAR helmet though, i bet there similar too the current Indycar ones
@ConorDaly22 Thought so. Thank you for taking the time to answer 👍👍👍
How long will you typically use a helmet before it's retired? Did that change after the aeroscreen?
It definitely changed after the aeroscreen. It's so hot in the cars now that you actually retire the helmet more because the interior for me at least gets so salty and nasty! But thankfully we are lucky to get a few helmets so you just space them out during the year. me personally I always retire my Indy 500 helmets after the race. they are special ones. Sometimes I've used them again but not normally
Thoughts on potential drivers for the 2026 Cadillac F1 team?
I think one needs to be Colton Herta! Without a doubt
