The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and former lead singer Tarja Turunen. The band soon picked up drummer Jukka Nevalainen, and then bassist Sami Vänskä after the release of their debut album, Angels Fall First.

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

@@gabriel_bardac Yes a small sample meaning she can or will concentrate on solo career... I think with Covid and Marko leaving and the tremendous run they had, it became apparent that to continue in the form they had been at, in their peak, a break was needed to see if all the parts could come back together for another ride. Many groups have a Bell Curve career, where the peak is in the middle. You never want to quit when you are at the bottom of the other end of the curve. They will decide in a couple of years if they can keep the standard as high as it has always been. I think you are right. Tuomas is not done with his creativity at all and the good news from this video clip is that Floor is as ready as anyone to continue. WE CAN'T EVER LOOSE HER!!! Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora.
Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy.
Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6).
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉.
Floor has 3 distinct styles. Head banging(straight forward, then back), hair whip(almost like cracking a bullwhip) and the Windmill(continuous 360 degree revolutions). Why Windmill? Well she is Dutch.
Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.

Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish)
Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot.
This was recorded at the 2013 Wacken (pronounced Vahken) Open Air festival in Germany in front of an audience of 82,000 people. The fiery bull head is the symbol of the festival.

Floor stands just a tad under 6-2 in bare feet, and she's wearing 5 inch heels here.....she is the Valkyrie Goddess.....Tuomas Holopinen is the keyboardist, co-founder, leader, guru, composer, lyricist, arranger, and producer of 95% of the band's music.....he's the "Metal Mozart".....audience was an intimate little gathering of 82,000......the entire show is on DVD, and RUclips, titled :Showtime, Storytime"......this wasn't even the show ender.....sorry, guys, Floor can sing Amy Lee under the table.....there are more metal bands out there; Epica, Jinjer, Sabaton, Kamelot, Amaranthe, Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, Arch Enemy, Imperial Age, Orion's Reign, Ayreon, Wintersun, Unleash the Archers, Suite Clarity, Lords of the Trident, Liliac.....Nightwish Army, South Carolina, USA

This is at Wacken pronounced vah-ken in Germany. 82ooo people this night. Floor (the singer) is miles above Amy Lee. Floor can sing normal, growl, and sing opera..in the same song! This group sounds so good live!
You are right - nobody followed them. This was nr 13 of their 15 song Playlist - and they closed the Wacken 2013 Open Air festival. The band before was Alice Cooper - but no one remembers - Nightwish are that powerful!!
And seeing Nightwish live is in a category where you have to use the Richter scale to measure the impact they have on your spine and soul - not kidding.
And the goosebumps you had - the official word is 'Floorgasm' - still not kidding you - and you have to get used to it, while it's a common phenomenon in most Nightwish songs with Floor as lead.

1 month ago I had no idea who Floor Jansen or Nightwish even were. Stumbled upon them completely by accident from a youtube recommendation. It is absolutely crazy just how expanded my world has become in terms of music. I listened to some heavier stuff in the early-mid 2000's, like your Disturbed or System of a Down -whatever was getting radio play at the time, but metal (especially symphonic metal) has been so off my radar for years I can't believe there's been a group like this putting out performances like this the whole time.
If you like metal try some other Finnish metal bands too: Amorphis, Insomnium, Battle Beast or Beast In Black... All quite different 👍🏻🤟🏻

Welcome to the wonderful world of Nightwish. Live is the best way to hear them that's for sure 😀 No two songs are the same and there's a lot of songs! One of the things I love about them is how genuine they are on stage. You can see just how much they are enjoying being there and they are as one, not like you get with some bands, where you have the lead singer then the rest of the band. Not so with them, heck Floor has even been back up vocals for Marko, how many other frontmen would do that? They are amazing musicians in their own right but put them together with Tuomas' amazing compositions and you have something on a whole other level 😀

Welcome to Nightwish. This song is a sampler of what the band can do. They have stuff that is much harder, much softer and a bunch of stuff in between. They can seamlessly move through different genres and styles. Every member of the band is amazing, and Floor (lead singer) is next level. There is nothing she can't sing. And yes, this is epic in person. Also, on their last tour, this was only the second to last song. The song after this was longer and more epic.

That was the 13th song out of 15, Floor had been singing, headbanging & windmilling for an hour and 10 minutes before that, and two after it. Every song at that concert is great. I listen to the whole concert usually every week.
Floor can sing any kind of music and usually does. Marko the bassist sings, and so does Troy. Keep on the Nightwish bandwagon you can't go wrong.

Welcome to the Nightwish Army....wow...what a great reaction! I haven't read all comments...but yes this in Wacken. The biggest metal open air of the world...like almost 80.000 metalheads being there as a big awesome family in North Germany. I've been there many times.....yes it's or very hot and dusty....or it's rainy all the time😂. But the Wacken feeling is always there.

Just want to point out , that it has been said, that every Nightwish song is different from each other, so it is not only Operatic/Classical music. Like also out of their repertoire following songs are more traditional metal with NW spice on them: “Romanticide”, “Yours Is an Empty Hope”, “Song of Myself” (the latter Half of the Song) and “Master Passion Greed” which is their most heavy and hard song, some say it is like Pantera with a twist - you should listen to these to understand the Bands versatility and ability to play any type of Metal they want to.. AND of course a Wacken 2013 Live version if only possible, for that show is the gem..

You guys should listen "Wintersun - Time (TIME I Live Rehearsals At Sonic Pump Studios) REMASTER" another epic band from Finland. Nightwishes current drummer and bass player are both been on Wintersun. Epic stuff and drummer Kai Hahto is amazing. Not to diss the other band members either..

ARISE NIGHTWISH ARMY
At this show Floor was not yet officially the new lead singer, she was filling in for the second singer. She sings songs written for two former singers and Tuomas (the keybord and master) always challenge the singers with the songs. Floor was told before this show that she was a member of the band, but Nightwish officially announced it in October 2013.
Actually the asked her and also Troy to be in the band, both said yes. :)
Enjoyed you reaction, saw them in Prague( 22). Next time is in June in Athens (Greece) and then Floor solo in Holland in July. I have liked and subscribed. With you guys for the journey 👍
