One of the best you’ve done Lex, amazing guest! This will be listened to multiple times so much great stuff in here. The ending was just a cherry on top.
Add reverb and Mr. Frank could be a modern day Alan Watts hopped up on amphetamines and Zen. This show was way better than an Art Bell rerun. A fur-out head-scratcher par excellence. Thanks, Lex. Loved it.
Lex, Every time I think ‘this is the most amazing podcast he’s done’, you produce yet another. You are a blessing and a gift my friend and I, once again, thank you for letting me sit in on your conversation!❤
Adam Frank is a role model for me. His enthusiasm, knowledge, and practicality while explaining complex concepts makes him a hero for all of us that aspire to become science communicators.
Yep. It would be so interesting to hear this guy talk about aliens in a more open way. He clearly denies any modern information being released about aliens. They're here guys.
I appreciate that this guy is enthusiastic, but it was a little too much handwaving for me. His comment about abiogenesis “I think it’s really easy” and “evolving the ability to fly must be easy because it’s been done multiple times” tells me more about his optimism, than it does about a serious scientific approach. I realize he’s not an astrobiologist, but if he’s going to talk about aliens, it seems like he would want to have a little more rigorous approach. Beware of confirmation bias.
@@WTShcolloge wish more of my friends were interested enough to discuss full length podcasts like this. Almost Two weeks on and this is still up there with the better podcasts I've listened to recently..
Great to see Lex doing more science episodes! Adam is fantastic 🎉 It's always intriguing how adam emphasizes the vast number of planets in the universe and uses simulations to estimate the probability of extraterrestrial life. However, the limitations of these simulations and the inherent difficulty of simulating complex biological and evolutionary processes raise questions about the reliability of such estimations. Additionally, the focus on technological civilizations might be overlooking other forms of life that could exist, potentially leading to a biased perspective on the likelihood of life beyond Earth. But ultimately his argument concerns all planets in the history of the observable universe which are almost all inaccessible
I agree with you about Lex and Adam but I disagree with your pessimistic note about the difficulty of finding other forms of life. The century that is beginning could give us many surprises. The detailed exploration of our solar system could provide us with examples of extraterrestrial life that could exist on some moon of Jupiter or Saturn (or fossil life on some planet like Mars). Even if we do not find it, we will be able to investigate how life on Earth adapts to other environments outside our planet (wherever we go we will take at least plants and bacteria) and who knows what we will discover about the adaptability of living beings (of the current known type). As for intelligent extraterrestrial life, we will be able to look for signs of life + technology (such as, for example, atmospheres compatible with photosynthesis that also show signs of being contaminated by industrial activity) thanks to recent technical advances that, no doubt, you know very well. Life may be more probable even than we think. In the end, what really matters is not biology itself (or its similarity to the well-known example: life on Earth) but the possibility of intelligence in general (including robots that could adapt very quickly to catastrophic changes that would annihilate biological life on their home planet). With the emergence of AI we are creating a second origin of "life" on Earth (at least "known" since we do not know for sure if our type of life was the first to emerge on Earth) and this new type of life could soon inhabit our entire solar system and "surrounding areas". Greetings and keep up your channel, which is one of the best I know.
His main "argument" is a vast amount of habitable planets. 10²² isn't even that many, there are more atoms in an apple. Sample of one just doesn't allow for his conclusion.
Wow Lex, what a great guest. Thank you! Dr. Frank, thank you for sharing your knowledge and excitement about science with us. You seem like a really great guy. I hope to listen to you again.
Greetings, Adam Frank and Lex Fridman! 👽 Zorblat here, representative of the Galactic Federation's PR department. Just wanted to clarify a few things for your audience: Yes, we're out here. No, we don't probe anymore-that was a rogue faction. The real reason you haven’t found us? We’re binge-watching your podcasts and frankly, we’re a bit intimidated by how much you guys overthink everything. Keep up the great work, humans. - Anyway, back to the mothership. Stay curious! 🛸✨
You're the best Lex. I said it, believe it. Ask the AI to search the moon surface for anything with at least two right angles, or something that makes multiple perfect shapes. Nothing in the room looks off because it was all created, but a desk in the forest would really stand out.
Я провела 3,5 часа в состоянии умиротворения и любопытства. Как обычно, разговор охватил значительно больше тем для размышления, чем в описании.Спасибо Вам.
Great guest, please have him back! One correction: The wrong book was put on screen at 1:51:51 at the mentioned of Aurora by Kim Stanely Robinson. The image was of Aurora by David Koepp which is not a generation ship novel.
The beginning was beyond amazing and mindblowing, but the end was even better. Dr. Adam Frank seems to have many of the same ideas as Dr. John Vervarke, it would be amazing to see the two of them talk. Thank you to both of you for everything you do for us. This is truly a life-changing conversation full of insights for me. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I've often wondered if our world was visited in the ancient past, only to be erased by our concept of time. If there ever were, their ice cream must have been delicious. ⌛ Awesome episode #455!
In Iain Banks works, in his novels about the Culture, there are numerous examples of Civilizations which are know in general as "The Sublimed". They just pick up and gradually fade out of the dimensions we are familiar with into higher ones and seemingly never drop in again. RE: the discussion kicked off around 57:00 mark.
The really hard problem of biogenesis is the absurdly difficult task of randomly producing an encapsulation of just the right chemistry to be able to allow it to replicated itself and pass to its offspring sufficient information to allow for the continuation of the process.
@@Ssilverhazehaha that’s great. I don’t understand how this happened but I only heard someone mention Lex Fridman last week. NEVER heard of him. What a treat! SO many videos to listen to with a different vibe than the usual podcasts I listen to. Anyway, I heard his voice and immediately thought about that radio character in ‘Reservoir Dogs’ 😂😂
There is no guarantee that the Kardashev scale will be a good metric to represent the advancement of a civilization. There is a higher chance that sufficiently advanced civilizations will favor efficiency over the use of more resources. You would not be able to detect such civilization even if it was travelling through our solar system.
Wow, just listening to the pure joy in this man's voice as he talks about things I can't even comprehend.. it's fantastic! Thanks for another fascinating conversation Lex! Happy Holidays and all that jazz! 🙏
@ oh yeah I wasn’t aware. Thought he was pretty neutral but then this made him look a bit bought and paid for but was hoping there’s some good reason for why he would hide content from his viewers. I want independent thinkers.
Best podcast I’ve seen in 2024, hands down. I was thrilled to learn that Adam is a Zen practitioner. Contemplative practice is so important. My path lead me to vipassana (“insight meditation “) which also empathizes direct experience and metta (“loving kindness “). All the knowledge in the universe is useless without love.
To your conversation about FTL: There is an author named Gene Wolfe, who wrote a saga entitled "The Book of the New Sun", in which humanity uses "anti-iron/iron" drives to propel themselves through the cosmos at FTL speeds, somehow. Also, generation-ships are part of his series "Epiphany of the Long Sun", which deals with a human society that has spent hundreds of years en-route to an unknown destination. it is a FASCINATING read, and the two series tie into each other. Please, read these books, Lex.
I couldn't stop my self from being fascinated with a variety of fresh ideas presented by Adam Frank during this no less than three hours length talk. As an astrophysicist, Frank's years of scientific endeavor for truth in nature inevitably lead his ultimate interest to deeper existentialist question, to the study of cubism, which revealing the constitutive role of human agency in scientific practice. Wonderful how it all relates to love as the essence of being in the world.

But...then we still can't truly interact or communicate with life...even if we could technically get there....we would just be a bunch of conscious photons.
Adam Frank is the MAN!!!! One of the easiest people to listen to explain things. My man Lex still has a way to go 🍻😜
happy christmas and a fantastic new year to all ❤
One of the best you’ve done Lex, amazing guest! This will be listened to multiple times so much great stuff in here. The ending was just a cherry on top.
Let the holidays begin... HAPPY XMAS ALL
Rejoice, and Joy to the world!!
He came, He died, then He rose.

Lex, you’re getting me through the lack of videos from people due to the holiday! Thanks for all you’re doing!!!
This guy has good energy and good vibes
Yep. It would be so interesting to hear this guy talk about aliens in a more open way. He clearly denies any modern information being released about aliens. They're here guys.

Great episode! Best podcast on RUclips for sure
THE EXPANSE IS THE BEST SHOW EVER, I LOVE THAT HE LOVES IT!!!
Love that show watched it like 5 times
This guys a great philosopher with scientific knowledge a rare breed
Haven't watched yet but i like this guy. He approaches the existence of aliens from a scientific perspective.
Rarely do i spend 3 hours
I appreciate that this guy is enthusiastic, but it was a little too much handwaving for me. His comment about abiogenesis “I think it’s really easy” and “evolving the ability to fly must be easy because it’s been done multiple times” tells me more about his optimism, than it does about a serious scientific approach.
I realize he’s not an astrobiologist, but if he’s going to talk about aliens, it seems like he would want to have a little more rigorous approach.
Beware of confirmation bias.
11pm in London. Looking for something to sleep to and I find this
Thank you Lex and happy holidays.

Almost Two weeks on and this is still up there with the better podcasts I've listened to recently..
Best narrator and interviewee ever. Love it how he just stops talking when he has answered the question.
I love Lex's 1960's G-man look and his Twilight Zone like introductions!! 😆
Great to see Lex doing more science episodes! Adam is fantastic 🎉
It's always intriguing how adam emphasizes the vast number of planets in the universe and uses simulations to estimate the probability of extraterrestrial life.
My thoughts exactly
His main "argument" is a vast amount of habitable planets. 10²² isn't even that many, there are more atoms in an apple. Sample of one just doesn't allow for his conclusion.

I’m so glad he mentioned “The Expanse”! It’s such a great show🎉!
Fantastic show.
I'm still upset about the cliffhanger it ended on though.
Always love to listen to Professor Frank talk about life on other planets!
Which is the same as talking about nothing since we have zero evidence of life on other planets. Zero!
Hey Lex. What happend with the Interviews with Fedorov and Ponomarenko? Will they be released?
Lex should be the host of The Twilight Zone. Eerily calm voice
Thank you Lex I wish you a Merry Christma and a Happy NY.
Greetings, Adam Frank and Lex Fridman! 👽 Zorblat here, representative of the Galactic Federation's PR department. Just wanted to clarify a few things for your audience:

Brilliant! Around 2:45:00 - Forrest Landry has the most clarity on this that I've seen! Highly recommend to check out his work!
You're the best Lex. I said it, believe it.
Ask the AI to search the moon surface for anything with at least two right angles, or something that makes multiple perfect shapes. Nothing in the room looks off because it was all created, but a desk in the forest would really stand out.
Wow. One of the most interesting professionals I caught on a podcast. Well done Prof. Adams.
After so many fabulous Lex interviews this is one of the best. From beginning to end.

Hi Lex, I absolutely love these interviews you do with physicists and the discussions of Alien life and everything in between
Such a good talk! Starts out somewhat basic and just dives so deep!!
Great guest, please have him back! One correction: The wrong book was put on screen at 1:51:51 at the mentioned of Aurora by Kim Stanely Robinson. The image was of Aurora by David Koepp which is not a generation ship novel.
I went looking for that book and imagine my surprise when I started reading a synopsis about a bunker in the desert.
Excellent intro excerpt! Hooked me right in.
Great guest, and very interesting angles on physics. Great minds, 😁
LOVE the moment when Lex thinks of something and notes it down with a little smile full of happy curiosity 1:48:20
I love his enthusiasm.
Imagine him as your professor. You would actually go to lectures.
I've often wondered if our world was visited in the ancient past, only to be erased by our concept of time. If there ever were, their ice cream must have been delicious. ⌛ Awesome episode #455!
Loved it! Love. This. Guy! (The guest, I mean… but also Lex!)
We need to have more meaningful conversations like this one. The world needs more compassion and love.
Lex Friedman is the best. He has a truly unbiased point of view. People would be vastly improved by a picogram of Lex's integrity.
You must not be paying attention or your own bias is blind you. He is massively biased
He's hugely biased towards right wing political figures

The really hard problem of biogenesis is the absurdly difficult task of randomly producing an encapsulation of just the right chemistry to be able to allow it to replicated itself and pass to its offspring sufficient information to allow for the continuation of the process.

There is no guarantee that the Kardashev scale will be a good metric to represent the advancement of a civilization.
There is a higher chance that sufficiently advanced civilizations will favor efficiency over the use of more resources. You would not be able to detect such civilization even if it was travelling through our solar system.

To your conversation about FTL:
There is an author named Gene Wolfe, who wrote a saga entitled "The Book of the New Sun", in which humanity uses "anti-iron/iron" drives to propel themselves through the cosmos at FTL speeds, somehow.
