I live and work in Switzerland and the price hikes have a lot to do with the relative strength of the Swiss Franc at the moment. Lots of companies are having issues with exports due to this. It is a little surprising the US market would escape the increase, but the CHF to USD rate has not strengthened as much as with other currencies. It also fluctuates more than others, which may explain the exclusion. The EUR and GBP rates are only trending in one direction.
Interesting context. The issue, from the perspective of this consumer, is not losing a little money. Depreciation is normal. The issue is the magnitude of depreciation. Case and point: Panerai charges 19k for a carbon, time-only diver. Is this Panerai trying to maintain their margins, or are they trying move up-market? I don't know, but if it is the later, then screw them. People aren't interested anymore in buying a watch whose market value is half the asking price, and watch brands will destroy themselves trying to persuade you to do so.
Hi from Zurich. I would argue Rolex‘ price strategy outside of Switzerland has to do with whether they view a country and their currency as an emerging or developed market. Of course CHF continues to be strong across the board, but the USD‘ status as THE global currency which is likely to bounce back at least a little bit helps to justify not raising prices (at least this year) vs other less established currencies.
Canadian here -- I can say I've walked away from potentially buying some items including watches when doing the currency conversion. Typically going USD -> CAD means $1000 becomes $1350, plus we get taxed 13% on any imports over $20 USD. So then that $1350 is now $1525 and that doesn't include any shipping or brokerage fees.
Hi fellow Canuck. Canada is not even a consideration for most brands, they don’t give a shit about us as consumers. Hamilton and Tissot are now luxury priced brands in Canada.
@@thebestoffools I like our health care system. Recently had an operation here in Ontario that south of the border would have set me back 45,000 dollars. I guess I could buy that Tudour after all lol.

i bought an explorer 40, 224270, in sept 2023 in canada for $9,050 at retail. they're now $9,750 at retail. oh, and the exchange rate between US and CDN has stayed flat for a long time. i've been watching another item sold from the US for at least 6 months waiting for a good time to buy (i don't need it until this april).
I actually think the move away from leather straps to the oysterflex on the daytona was a great one from rolex. To me, modern daytonas on leather look very very top heavy, like a giant head on top of a tiny body. The oysterflex or the bracelet provide way more balance. A skydweller on leather looks even more appalling.
Agree. They are actually very slim watches, especially for chronographs, but the lack of an integrated strap makes them look top heavy. The oyster flex is integrated and solves that problem.
For anybody wondering, Christian is wearing a Gerald Charles "Maestro 8.0 Squelette" (Ref GC8.0-RG-06) - retails for GBP £67k. It's gorgeous and I must say i've never seen - or heard - of one before. Thanks for putting it on my radar!
@@Official_MikeyT Dont think I will be buying any Rolex soon. Next probably a PF Tonda GMT. Better getting in the grey market as the prices are slipping.

The premium paid for a SS ceramic Daytona over a Zenith chronomaster sport is silly. The Zenith is a better watch (36000 VPH), the Rolex has better finishing but the premium is not justifiable. For all the chrono watch fans who are struggling paying Rolex greymarket pricing buy the Zenith and put the difference toward another nice watch.
Need to figure in sales tax also. That is another 8-10% on top of retail. Most of the time this is factored in not only the secondary price but also whether to buy retail or grey market. Also it is the number one reason by Grey market dealers to artificially inflate secondary prices. Often times it makes up the profit by grey market dealers. Buy at just below retail then use it to justify retail plus sales tax for asking prices. It tends to artificially inflate prices around retail levels.
I’m Canadian and I work for an American country and it’s usually the USD is 30% higher so for ever American dollar it costs us Canadians $1.30 to buy one USD
With wait lists being so long for Rolex and prices going up it even a better argument for going gray market. A 5 year wait the price may be the same and you get it now.

Rolex also increased their prices in Germany and is slowly trying to take away one WEMPE boutique’s Dealer license for Rolex, which is particularly important because wempe is probably the biggest AD company in Germany. But since the bucherer Buying thing it isn’t a surprise
Inflation for the US dollar is slowing relative to the currency of other countries, so they need to raise prices for those countries to maintain the same dollar strength found in the US.
Would love to see you guys do a show were you bring a couple viewers on with there chrono24 wish lists and help them walk through what watch they should buy! imagine realising after 5 years of waiting for a batman that you could've paid less in grey back then than current retail because of price increases. Not to mention buying watches you didn't want.
