Totally agree. I never got the "message" from the original Simon and Garfunkel version because their voices are so light, but it's so clear in this version.

I actually got to hear him live shortly after this song was released, so it was fresh. I was completely shocked that it sounded just like the studio version and how effortless it seemed to be for him. Not to mention the emotion that came from him during the performance. This was my favorite band before seeing him live and now... Not just the band holds a special place but him as a singer has commended my respect.

I have a couple of mental health issues and suffer very bad anxiety. I listen to this 3 or 4 times in a row with my first morning cuppa (and several times through the day and evening) . To start with the softer deep part, then the raw power of his voice. He is sooooo much better then my antidepressants. He is a must for my day

As a man in my 60s, I grew up listening to the original Simon and Garfunkel version but it was mainly their harmonies I liked and didn't understand the meaning of the lyrics until I heard Disturbed's version, both their studio recording and this live version, that I began to understand it's meaning and how much it relates to the current political and social climate here in the US.
It's like Paul Simon was warning us, way back in 1964, that we were losing our ability to communicate with one another and Disturbed version is a more, rightfully, angry cry that we didn't listen and/or understand what Paul was telling us back then.
I can honestly tell you that, this performance and the studio recorded version quickly became my all-time favorite song. This is coming from someone who had Nights In White Satin/Late Lament by the Moody Blues as their all-time favorite for most of his life.

David in my opinion is today one of the best male singer out there regardless his band he sings for. He has been classically trained and this song shows off all his training. Another singer you must review is Floor Jansen from Nightwish a song called Ghost Love Score live at Waken 2013. This women will blow your socks off

-Draiman covers roughly two-and-a-half octaves from bottom to top. His vocals are so distinctive.
-Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan.
-David: "The fact that I was sick as a dog (laughs). I remember I was definitely fighting something off, but it was a cool experience. It was cool performing with an actual orchestra. It was really vibing and the mood helped, I think, enhance the delivery. The stars just aligned that night and everything went right."

David Draiman is an operatic baritone who was trained to be a cantor for a good part of his younger life, continuing vocal training after his yeshiva, (he was kicked out of 3, I guess), into his 20’s. He’s trained long enough to understand his vocal folds, how to use his facial and jaw muscles to force his fries and power forward of his throat. He understands damage. David had horrific gastric reflux as a younger man while he was a heavy drinker back then. He had to stop the behavior, but he took a 3 year hiatus to do some other collaborations. He also had surgery to correct the damage done to his cords and on the gastric valve. His instrument is his body. He respects it more now. When he speaks, he is very soft spoken. Even that tells me he’s protecting his voice.
I loved the educated observation you made that David doesn’t make use of sharp glottal stops and other ways of straining to chop the consonants. He breathes through his words rolling them into one breath unless he chooses not to. I’m fascinated by his skill. Thank you for your assessment of his voice. The only thing I’d add is that David certainly becomes a story teller by how he brings real emotion into this rendering. This draws us in and allows us to fully understand the message behind the brilliant lyrics of Paul Simon. The angst!
If you haven’t, consider watching the official video of this and assess the difference between the live performance on a talk show and the video. Remarkable to see how little difference there is.
    Thank you again!

When I fist saw the live version a couple of months ago I had been listening to this song on a weekly almost nightly basis and I could just tell something was off not like the way auto tuning is used but just with him. I found out earlier this week he was sick during the live performance and I was like "that makes so much since!"

It's unfortunate that the surgery didn't work longer than he wished as well so he still has to deal with that issue of the acid burning that sphincter (yeah that's what it's called) on his esophagus. He just makes sure to stay to his diet to reduce the acid reflux and sleep in a more of a sitting up position. I think it's his extensive training that had allowed him to understand his vocal cords and the delicacy of it. It's a dangerous area to have surgically treated for a singer. It's how Julie Andrews lost a great deal of her voice/range because she was told she needed surgery on her vocal cords because there were nodules that needed to be removed. Turns out the doctors were wrong so when the surgeon went in there were no nodules on her vocal cords. They were just swollen from overuse because she was performing a lot. But the surgeon made error in surgery and it ended up damaging her vocal cords. She had a few more surgeries after that but nothing could fix the damage. So, not only did she not need surgery in the first place but the surgeon permanently damaged her vocal cords for life. In David's case there is no more doctors can do to help because there is nothing left to really fix the problem so he's careful with it. Music just runs in David's family though. His Great-Grandfather was a Jewish Cantor in one of the biggest Synagogues in Jerusalem. David also has experience in the healthcare industry having worked in and owned acute nursing facilities prior to Disturbed getting their record deal. They are all very intelligent and talented group of guys.

This is my favorite rendition of this song. His interpretation truly brings out the true meaning of the lyrics. Simon and Garfunkel sang to alarm us, Disturbed sings to give us a final warning. You should watch the original music video of it when you get a chance. It is as beautiful as it is haunting.

He did indeed and it was a respiratory flu. The one note in a higher register is a bit distorted or fried, and a lot of people have sad he was using auto tune on this note. This was a choice by the sound man on set. He didn’t need it and was upset about it. He knows his range.

That's why he sat for the performance. Word is he was super-pissed the show autotuned him, they didn't want to risk his being ill affecting it. Paul Simon said this is his favourite version so any other review is just gravy. A great message given it's best ever expression.

Your eyes and facial expressions relay the emotions you felt as well as the surprise you experienced!! This is a powerful cover of a song written in 1965!! This group has never done a song like this before as they are a Hard Rock/Metal group!!
This is my favorite song recorded in the past 5 years!! Wondrously and remarkably this is so far removed from their typical music that anyone (EVERYONE?) is taken aback and or blown away!! Not until this was released (12/2015) did anyone feel these lyrics so intensely!! This is way more dominant and dynamic than the 1965 original; not necessarily better!! This song can and SHOULD be listened to by anyone who likes music; all genre listeners should experience this song!!
IMO, 2 more magical songs, check out Heart paying tribute to Led Zeppelin (2012) in front of the boyz!! Awesome, I think their version of this classic is so much more fitting to the lyrics than the original. Being a vocal coach, have you ever listened to the young rising superstar Angelina Jordan? There are two places to start, either at her appearance at AGT Champions 2020 with her completely new rendition of "Bohemian Rhapsody" or the shocker at age 9, when she re-arranged the original version of "I put a spell on you" by Screaming Jay Hawkings from 1956. It would be awesome if you'd react to Phil Anselmo singing Cemetary Gates from the band Pantera! His voice is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!! His range is like none I've ever heard, not even David has his range I believe. I could be wrong that's why you need to react to it! The studio version would be better than the video but it is up to you! Tysvm!!!

The studio version was much more powerful , he had the flu when he recorded this show and they used auto tune to try to fix it he was Furious when they told him he did that cuz she's a classically trained opera singer when he was younger who fronts a metal band now somehow got involved in this project

    • @annsouren
      @annsouren  3 года назад

Yeah, I would be furious as well , he doesn’t need an autotune.. there’s nothing wrong with his pitch control.. he sounds like he’s got cold but it’s not something that needs to be tuned

I find the autotune that was thrown on it very annoying, he doesn't need it, and it distracts from his fabulous voice and perfectly emotional delivery.
