Bc club achievements aren’t as great as international achievements, it’s like nba championships for the World Cup. Also it’s easier to win club championships. The World Cup is the hardest thing to win
Unlike Basketball where the dream team wasn’t taken seriously and the US team scoffed at competition…Football (soccer) is HIGHLY competitive and the World Cup is where your team TRULY becomes WORLD Champs. In America, teams call themselves world champs when it is literally a National Title.

In my lifetime, Zidane was the best player I had ever seen. That 2006 Quarterfinal performance alone was enough but 3 goals in 2 World Cup finals as well as the countless other trophies he's won cements it for me. Messi can get on his level when he wins the World Cup no doubt.

All this football GOAT talk is a strictly American narrative to those who have not seen his greatness every week for the past 17 years (or any other world-class footballer for that matter) because the World Cup happens once every four years and there are continental cups in between, all happening during every off-season (except this one in the winter) as well as FIFA calendar dates for World Cup qualifying during the season. It's as dumb as leaving LeBron or Curry out of the conversation if they didn't win an Olympic or World Championship gold medal. They don't need it because we see them play in the NBA and generally agree. Same thing with Messi and Ronaldo at UEFA Champions League level and what they have achieved with their countries against way better teams. The only difference is America has this weird obsession with putting a number on everything and generating attention with it.

All these guys had way longer careers at the top. 5 years on world class level are not enough to crack the Top 10 imo. But he is definetly Top 15/20.
