William King actually sat there and said “the three songs” sung by Richie, as if Lionel wasn’t a big deal in the band. Check out original Commodores guitarist Thomas McClary’s book for a deeper look into the band and what really caused Lionel to leave. McClary also did a 3 part in-depth interview with Truth and Rhythm host Scott Goldfine that’s posted here on RUclips

@@lovelyearth8049 So you’re just going to ignore the fact that Lionel Richie wrote the majority of hits that made The Commodores what they were. They would never get any work if it wasn’t for those original songs that were successful in the 70s. You can like them all you want, but acting as if Lionel Richie meant nothing to The Commodores and that they are better without him is utterly ridiculous and history proves that as a fact

Lionel became the star with his composing and ballads. That was a departure from the genre that the other members of the band liked to play.
It also became uncomfortable as the media began to play attention to Lionel over the other band members, with some newspaper music critics writing to the effect of "what is a talented musician like Lionel Richie doing still playing with a funk group like the Commodores?"
That caused tensions between Richie and his fellow band members. Eventually, they suggested to Richie that he go record a solo album and come back to the Commodores afterwards. Richie did go off and do that, but one project led to another in short order and he never returned to the band. The other members felt burned by this to varying degrees.

No truth in saying Clyde sang on the majority of the songs.
Lionel definitely sang lead the most.
