- Joseph A. Molnar, MD, PhD, FACS, regional medical director of the Wake Forest Baptist Health Comprehensive Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center, explains the hyperbaric chambers.
Hyperbaric chambers are designed to expose people to oxygen at higher pressures. These higher pressures actually drive oxygen into the tissues, resulting in effects that last much longer than the time in which they are in the chamber.
This treatment, over a period of time and with repeated visits, can actually allow for the development of better blood vessels and better blood flow to the tissues to help them heal. This treatment can be particularly helpful to patients with diabetic ulcers who have bad blood flow.
