In my opinion the second best DT suite after A Change of Seasons. It's close between this and Octavarium, but my favourite part of that is the climax and solo, of which this song also has. It begins with DT at their most metal before breaking down into the seedy darkness of 'Heretic' and then takes us back to a driving beat for the 'Battle' section before hitting us with an epic climax(using the melody from the solo no less). The cheesy 'dark master' D&D stuff only adds to the appeal I feel, as it sells the epic nature of the song with a sincere and upfront approach, backed up by a versatile vocal performance from LaBrie. I think its some of Petrucci's better lyrics too, he can often get too vague and dreamy but the point of this song is clear from the start, and it represents a relatable struggle with faith and internal demons, externalised by the fantasy theme.
Underrated record.
Big time. Also I feel like i pretty much feel the same way about their albums as you do, lol.
I did - for a while - rate Scenes from a Memory way up there with those albums, and i do still think that's an oft-overlooked album of theirs, but you just can't compare to Octavarium, or Change of seasons (indisputably the best, with glass prison and CoS on the one album wtf my body wasn't ready). The only thing I would add to that is Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence I think deserves a spot somewhere up here, too. About to crash vs the reprise was the first song where I really, truly "got" what wah pedals were all about. I understood them, I just didn't know how you'd turn that into something that sounded cool. Then I heard the intro riff on reprise, and my ears closed their market position for a 2000% ROI, paid in dividends of air-guitar
His voice at the end is utterly ravishing, a marvellous celestial voice for us the mortals.

To know this music is to be an all encompassing musician. This along with 'The Ministry of Lost Souls' are just simply great pieces of music that transcend time and space... greater than the sum of the parts and eternally cherished by the craft itself.

@@mistermart50 Well for obvious reasons, he sounds great on every album. I think he damaged his vocal cords after Awake was recorded and people say that "he sucked" after that. He's spent nearly 30 years singing the way he has and is still going strong. The dude is 55 years old right now. To me it says a lot considering what kind of band this is and what it demands. The only thing that makes me cringe was a few songs he did live where his voice cracked a bit but that's still not enough to make me start hating on him. Not everyone is going to sound perfect live or how they do on the albums. He's an amazing vocalist who always puts maximum effort in what he does. People say Dream Theater isn't the same without Portnoy but imagine if James were gone. There would be no Theater.
@@mistermart50 Have you ever watched the live DVD DT did when Derek Sherinian was in the band? Shocking that the band, the label, and James Labrie himself allowed that to happen...it is maybe the worst live vocals in the history of a signed rock band...

I love the story of this song. From the beginning he fights for 'Dark Master' but in the end he turned against 'Dark Master' saying that "My soul is my own now, I do not fight for you, dark master!!!!"

Systematic Chaos is WILDLY underrated. This song here in particular, let's be honest, is an outright masterpiece and will go down as one of their all time greats.

That's why it makes me sad when people complain about LaBrie's vocals to be sub-par for a band like Dream Theater.
To be honest I was one of them when I was still in high school, almost 10 years ago.. but eventually his performance grew within me, and right now, honestly I cannot think anyone who would sing better DT's masterpieces than LaBrie
At part 6 Salvation and at the verse saying " I judge us.. your time has come" he always gives me some goosebumps

Unbelievable how underrated this and part 1 are. I'd put them up against ANY of their work. Fantastic music!
The 5.1 surround tracks they included with this CD was fucking incredible!
This album is like that grumpy uncle that some people have. The one who you think is a bit rough and unapproachable as a kid, but then when you're 30 and you look back you realise he was just keeping shit real with everyone and he's actually a closet badass.
PS: 13:13 - if this bit doesn't make you happy in the ears and the pants, then you may just be a robot (and then 13:44 that little alien tractor beam sound Rudess makes is weird but super cool while the motif marches through again underneath it OHH!)
