I think these motherboards came with a weird bios from factory. I have a B450 tomahawk max 2 which was supposed to have come with the zen 3 bios from factory, put a 5600g in it and kept getting CPU debug light and random shut downs. Turns out it was a weird bios version it shipped with from factory. Updating the bios worked perfectly.

    • @Ficii1
      @Ficii1 Год назад +7

Those boards launched before the zen 3 arrived. The factory support was Zen 2 but that also depends on the time it was manufactured, as it might get the bios updated in the factory, but there are still some without that bios update as they were sitting in storage.

Yeah that is a very weird thing cause I have a 550F board from Asus and my friend has an Asus 450F board and his had this issue yet mine didn't and I have a 5950x and he has a 5800x yet his did this same thing and when I updated the bios for him, it worked and fixed it. So this definitely ain't a normal thing. Hopefully MSI and other manufacturers really make sure this doesn't happen again and are aware of this and hopefully fix this cause this ain't something that should happen straight out of the box like that.

The Zen 3 APUs were released much later than the first set of Zen 3 CPUs, so most likely the board was manufactured after the initial release of Zen 3, but long before the APUs were released. So at the time it supported all available Zen 3 CPUs.

The ''missing'' bios may have been updated via MSI's software in windows. Some times i have seen it having different revisions then the site.
I think the ''automatic'' updates are some times different then the ''manual'' ones. And you never should use the windows software (MSI LIVE UPDATE 6) to update bios because its crap.
I think that is what happened in this case.

While I'm not sure on this case in video, but yeah...I had this bad experience back on early 2000s on a MSI motherboard in my house because their LIVE UPDATE tool provided a new BIOS update but that turned out a faulty release...install that will brick the board.
And then my brother had to take that motherboard to MSI company to replace that fault BIOS...and he found he was not the only one had to replace the BIOS chip(I think the new replaced one was previous version of BIOS on MSI's website) when on there...at least that process was free.
(That motherboard was just "one day old" lol)
And the next day...they just take out the BIOS update from their site and the LIVE Update server...and never had any new BIOS release for that board to ever released.
Yeah, be careful if they uploaded a fault BIOS release...it's rare but it can happens, at least for MSI. :P

@@PlayerLin I cant think of anything else. Greg and other comments said that it may have shipped out from the factory with that bios.
But the owned said that it was working after the motherboard replacement. So that cant be the case then. If the bios is incopatible it would have not worked at all.
And the the bios date was from may of 2022 and i dont think they are still making B450 boards in 2022.
So the only explanation that remains is that the bios was updated after the owner had gotten it and used it for a while.
Bios update is a very delicate prosedure and doing it in windows is very risky with any boards.
There are so many things that can go wrong with all the windows backround operations and so on.
So i think that the owner used the LIVE UPDATE to update everything including the bios.
Maybe the bios was already bad or it got corrupted during installation because of windows.
Best way to confirm this would be to ask the owner or check if the LIVE UPDATE is installed on the computer at all.
I would actualy want to know if i was right or not. But i gues it will remain a mystery.

@@j.p.h.8126 Remember what Greg said: Should not fully trust what owner was told.
So yeah it's possible the system was worked but ruined by LIVE UPDATE's faulty BIOS update but if that would be case, then it should be other users that using the same motherboard to report such problems...
But yeah I agreed what you said: it'll remain a mystery.

Greg, I had that same board (or one from that series) and I bought it new/open box but it had never been used. Anyway, I went with a different board for my build and sold the Tomahawk for like $150-$175 and I get a message from the buyer, that "the board is dead, won't boot, etc" and I'm ready to refund because you know, that's how it goes some times but then I used my common sense and directed the buyer to download the proper bios and gave them, instructions on how to flash the bios onto the board. The buyer said they would try and get back with me in the morning. It WORKED, flawlessly. The buyer was very happy.
They definitely had some corrupted bios revision, flashed from the factory on these boards.

I'd find it odd to have some version installed that isn't publicly available, but as long as it's not a known beta or known to cause issues, I wouldn't flash an older version. Long story short, purchased a B550 Aorus Master new in the box from 2022, which needed BIOS update for my 5900X. Swapped board out to a 3600X setup for another build and wouldn't you know it -- powers up, but only half the AMI logo loads and no POST. No CPU LED either. Rolled back the BIOS to a 2022 version and voila -- runs great.

All DIYers know a project has three components: Time, Patience, and Money. After watching this video, a DIY PC repair has the same three considerations, except substituting a good supply of working parts for money. Greg always presents an excellent example of initial troubleshooting. A test bench is the best tool for a PC repair, especially when replacing parts. The only time I don't verify the failure is if they describe something that sounds like a power issue/short. I'd hate to verify and end up doing more damage in doing so. That's about the only time I tear it apart and examine first. Had a system not too long ago that had all sorts of power issues. Loose wires, shorts... and worse yet, the wrong SATA cable for the PSU that was sending 12v into the SSD, which was already dead as a result.
And how sad that a supposed computer repair shop missed this. I wonder if they just did the basic crap and didn't see the money in spending a lot of time on it and gave it back. I sure hope they didn't charge them anything.

Nice catch on the BIOS, many would've missed that. And how strange that the mobo came with a defective BIOS. Unrelated, but I'm about to do a build in the same model Cougar case. One of the main reasons I bought it; it's one of the few gaming cases that has provision for a 5.25 optical drive (I have a nice Blue-Ray player to put in it)

The more I read about post issues, I'm starting to suspect a lot of it is improper bios installations issues as a lot of manufactures include notes and steps to upgrade to "x" bios first, install "x" firmware after "x" update, etc. And some people miss these steps and it causes issues. Ran into this plopping a 5950x into my friends X470 motherboard. It had a special upgrade bios to move from the 2000 series processors, instead of needing the 3000 series first as listed. Was a pain to find but after finding that special bios and following the instructions, we got it working. If you run into anymore 3000 series chip post issues, I would start with investigating bios updates and stepping.
Love the series Greg. I need to get larger place because I would love to do these types of videos and have my own workspace to content create.

Hey Greg. Great eye on catching that BIOS! Similar thing happened to me yesterday. I had a BETA BIOS on my system I believe and when I went to update my BIOS to the latest version, my current version couldn't be found anywhere on AsRock's page. Only difference is that my old BIOS worked for me, at least for my 5950X.

Greg, There was issues with that missing Bios, 1 issue was it would not work with an RX580 GPU, before this update there was an update of firmware for the RX580. You will find a missing Bios version for almost every, MSI MB it is odd that they did not create a proper CHANGE LOG for these bios to explain this.

The same thing happened to me with a MSI B550 mobo and modern 5600X, updating to latest stable bios version bricked the system, and downgrading to an earlier bios version fixed it. It sounds like a MSI QC issue

that is the reason why experienced people on computers say, if it works, dont touch.
just upgrade bios if is really needed, because new cpu, or problems with memory, etc.

@@MrDvneil if that was true then it wouldn’t have gotten bricked, but alas it did happen that way. The chip worked and works fine on other motherboards. Bet there was something faulty with it early since someone had originally sent it back to MSI before me.

Manufacturers will sometimes pull Bios updates from their website if there was a problem with it.
Or if it is was a temporary Beta Bios (i know Evga does this sometimes).

    • @AndyMitchellUK26

Hey Greg, just to let you know, when MSI and even Gigabyte updates the bios page, they tend to remove past beta bios versions. For some reason they live to keep only the most resent beta bioses.

  • @TimBoundy
    @TimBoundy Год назад

Around 10:50 you're talking about the BIOS version. The version the user had installed would have been a beta BIOS. They retract them when either a new beta BIOS supercedes it, or the final build is released.

About the BIOS thing : MSI sometimes does the thing of recalling some batch of board that's still in distributer's warehouse and factory flash experimental/engineering version of BIOS (which you won't find those files unless an employee leaks them) on those board which resulting in those board don't support some older CPUs.
I only knew this because the company I worked for have 2 batches of those boards came in last month and I was able to tell them apart because the bag containing the board have been opened before and the distributer we worked with said that MSI took them and flashed the BIOS.
