Nice to see another rig saved, your fix or flop videos have actually saved my own pc this week when my motherboard simply stopped working. I tried everything I could but it would not power on, after a little research it seemed the motherboard in question ( gigabyte ab350m gaming) has a bricking issue. I knew it wasn't ram or CPU as fans didn't even spin and I was able to test PSU on a second system. After purchasing a new board my system is back up and running, all I did with the old mb when it was last used it shut it down via the menu and left for a few days. It's a shame I couldn't send you the board to do some digging but I'm based in UK, anyway looking forward to your next video 👍👍

Congrats to the owner on you fixing that GPU. It's a pricey one to replace at the current moment. The memory issue is a bit of a bummer but can't have everything in life your way. I'm sure he'll eventually get it remedied anyway. Good job Greg as usual. :)
I think with a few giveaways of surplus to patreon members and maybe some extra videos, it would be definitely at least be worth considering. I am surprised you didn't test the Ryzen chip with another temporary setup to see if the dual channel still failed like you usually would, but at least you narrowed down the problem. I am glad to see you feeling better enough to post another fix or flop, and keep up the good work.
Have you tried disabling some of the cores on the Ryzen 9? That could possibly fix the bootloop issues. I had a very similar problem on my R5 1600 a while back and I disabled one of the cores, and it worked fine. It was a good solution to be able to use my computer until I could purchase a new chip. Loved the video! This series is always so interesting, and brings many issues I would never have thought of to light!
@@fridaycaliforniaa236 No, he could not start Windows, and he had the option to enter the bios. Disabling a couple of cores might make it work. I had that happen with an older phenom processor.

Problem is if the mounting pressure isn’t even and one edge is lifted up slightly you will get that blank spot and like observed in this video it takes very little time for heat to sky rocket on these super high performance parts. Excellent video I love how educational this stuff can be to experienced and inexperienced pc builders.
My Ryzen 3900x has that same boot loop issue. I RMA'd it and AMD sent me an email today saying a replacement is on its way. I'm really curious to know what is happening to these Ryzen cpu's to cause this issue.

I find it hard to believe these croak on their own and wonder if it's excessive heat or XMP profiles that push the controller too hard? Anyway, great job helping that guy. I don't like second hand components and especially complete systems unless they can be demonstrated functioning without issue. Good stuff Mr. Salazar! 💪👍
Probably auto voltage on motherboards pushing way too much voltage into the memory controller. Or in this case, since the cooler was clearly mounted loosely, maybe only one memory channel died a heat death (unlikely).
Thanks for the video. I had a very similar issue with my 6800XT except it took longer to power off. The issue turned out to be heat related. I tried re-pasting it and adding new thermal pads. Nothing worked until I water cooled it and the card has been rock solid ever since.
I love all your content but I especially love these videos; I feel like I've learned SO MUCH about PC troubleshooting just from watching you. I know how frustrating it is to have a problem and have genuinely no idea of how to fix it, so I thank you for the service you perform here as well as the hours and hours of entertainment you provide. Already looking forward to the next one (hopefully you won't have to replace another Ryzen CPU)!
i think your the first person to explain more about thermal paste then it cools. can not recall anyone talking about it being a filler all i heard was it cooled down the chip. through i have run a chip for years without any paste back with windows xp. no major heat issues with that system so it go away without any.
hate that he was scammed on Facebook Marketplace.....be more careful when you buy from this kind of place, test the components, and do trust no one! Thank Greg for helping the poor guy and fixing his GPU and providing the full fix for the PC owner. Love your series, watching all of them. Take care all of you!
There's always that risk on the marketplace but there's always the best deals to be had there. I bought my GTX 1060 6GB for £100 about 5 years ago as a quick replacement after my GTX 970 died on me and that badboy is still going strong today but I am now looking to upgrade and the marketplace again has some real good offers with RTX 3070's going for £240-£250... How can I say no to those? Lol
If I had the extra funds, I would totally support a Patreon effort for this channel. This is one of the channels that helped me successfully rebuild my computer (an OEM machine) a few months back.
Even though the culprit of the card is improper thermal paste, I think you also need to check if it has custom vbios especially if it is a used graphics card that might once used for mining.
Just built my first pc (i5 12600K) since 2012 (i7 3770). Binge watching this dudes videos filled me with both a level of confidence but also complete fear and anxiety. I had the same issue and swapped everything out except the cpu so far, added a + .025 offset voltage to the core and fixed my issues, seems like pbo is being too conservative or my chip is degrading either way yours may need more juice to stay stable
I wonder if the tiny noctua cooler with a loose mount killed the memory controller? The 5800X runs pretty hot even with a 360mm AIO unless you undervolt it. If not it was most likely still throttling like hell while under load.
@@louiesatterwhite3885 No its the smaller Noctua NH-U9S with 90mm fan. I know ive had both of them in the past. And the PBO is on by default why would you turn it off and lose performance? Well in this case it mite be a good idea. 😁
@@j.p.h.8126 you don't lose much performance, especially if you have a poor cooling solution. I have a 5800x on a 240mm radiator, pbo on it boosts to 83°C under heavy load, while under the same load I have 53°C with a 3% performance loss, measured by cinebench r23. I am going to upgrade to a 360mm arctic liquid freezer ii aio with 6 noctua nf a12x25 fans in push+pull, but I've been away from my pc for a few months. Basically, PBO overclocks your cpu based on temperature, and you can change the max temperature that PBO will target in Ryzen Master.
Really good video Greg ! Glad to see you saved another expensive GPU. Unfortunate about that 5800X, has me a little scared now but so far 6 months in daily use my 5800X still has no problems

With the 5900x, You should make a video delidding it because it could be that there is no contact between the dye and the IHS, causing it to overheat then shutdown.

I bought a r9 280X a few years ago for normal used price, the seller described it as working. Well it worked, for a while. Only to overheat to 93° and shutting down. It was cleaned then with new thermal paste and ran a few degrees cooler but still kept crashing. Seems there was a overheating problem before I bought it.
Could be a bios update needed, had same issue with my buddies computer. Ram only worked in one slot and would not post at all after bios update dual channel worked and his pc posted
I have exactly same GPU (2nd hand) and had same issue. Little bit of paste in the centre but no paste at the corners. Before re-paste I had core temp 102°C and 114°C hotspot running Time Spy Extreme. New thermal paste lowered temps to 76°C/94°C.
I’ve had the almost the same issue with my gtx 1080 and I did ddu, took it apart, reapplied paste, cleaned and dusted but it still has the same issue. However I’ve been looking to build a new one bc my system is pretty old anyways and was prebuilt (bc I was young and etc). Love the series man, really informative to someone that hasn’t had much experience working on and/or building PCs.
I say the upload and got excited. i love this playlist. i have watched it several times since discovering it a few weeks ago. i always feel like i learn so much from it.
Hey Greg, I have had that same ram issue on my system when I had them in the right dual channel slots. I would get posting issues. The solution I discovered was to clean the memory with some alcohol. System posted after reseating them and haven't had any issues since.
Subbed while I was drunk, slept and now I cant stop watchin becuase I'm trying to guess whats wrong. And you test everything viable I def hope you start gettin more funds becuase this is respect.
I had a similar problem with my gaming rig and your diagnosed helped solved it for my PC. Wish I could ship it to you, but the tower is bigger then my night stand.
Memory controllers dying in Ryzen seem like a common issue to me. In my experience it's caused by using the RAM Flex-mode. I had a 2700X die on me like that as well just recently. I'd recommend running single or dual-channel memory only. No flex mode with these. (Also check if your RAM is in the correct lanes as Greg pointed out.)
I would happily donate to a hardware fund, I don't join any creators on a per month cost for personal reasons but the idea of helping to get others a working PC makes me smile.
The startup loop you ran into there, I got that on my pc aswell. For some reason it does not boot from the correct ssd on my pc, so I have to press F11 on my pc, think it should be F12 on that board, and then select the correct ssd, and voila, it boots up. (I just look at it as extra security, cause no one is able to turn my PC on lol)
I upgraded from an RX580 to an RX5700XT and my PSU would kick out , it was an EVGA 600 watt so plenty powerful but they stood behind it and warrantied it with an even better PSU. I however replaced it with a Corsair 650 and havent had in issue since. Funny that it worked fine on the slightly less powerful RX580 .
Wattage isn't the only thing to consider with psus. Some are made with garbage components. Always check the psucultists tier list, and try not to buy anything below B tier
I had this same issue with my 3070, the shop took it back to test it and sent a replacement immediately, spent hours troubleshooting and it was a brand new card as well. Thankfully it didnt take too long to get my setup going again
Greg, just came across your channel. (Titusville here) Electronics & PC tech. More on the electronics side these days since the PC's software advanced faster then me.
Great job with the GPU, nice to see a real fix like this where you don't have to replace the component. It's also good that the "CPUs don't die" myth is finally dead. This threw me off a few years ago when my 4790k system would bootloop for minutes, or hours, before it POSTed. It seems like it needed more and more voltage to POST as timer went on. May have been because I once accidently set the voltage to 1.5v instead of 1.25v!
Not quite on topic for this Fix or Flop, but that issue you had with the 5900x is something I've seen before. I had the same issue with a 5600x I purchased new from Best Buy. After a day or 2 of working fine (but at noticeably higher temps than normal), it just started boot-looping like you showed in the video. Friend told me they had the same issue with a 5800x.
I watch most videos 1.25 or 1.5x, screen off, just listening. But fix or flop? 1x, in front of the screen! Always something interesting, always a good story, always something to learn.
Hey Greg! I’ve experienced the Ryzen boot loop problem you are seeing with the R9 5900x you have on hand. It was a R5 1600 that randomly decided to kick the bucket in the same manner. The motherboard would boot a R5 2600 but not the R5 1600. I resolved the issue by updating the bios of the motherboard it was installed in. The cpu in question would boot in other boards however, so this is not quite analogous but maybe you’ve been unlucky with the boards you have tried to boot it in? It was the exact same problem where the system would boot loop only when trying to boot windows. It would go into the bios no problem. I reset cmos before trying updating the bios and it wasn’t the solution. So the bios update was the changing factor. Best of luck!

Dude love these fix and flop series also thanks for helping out the folks, you're awesome.
did u update the bios for the dual channel issue??!
i think your the first person to explain more about thermal paste then it cools. can not recall anyone talking about it being a filler all i heard was it cooled down the chip. through i have run a chip for years without any paste back with windows xp. no major heat issues with that system so it go away without any.
Don't ever do that again for the love of god lol 😂
hate that he was scammed on Facebook Marketplace.....be more careful when you buy from this kind of place, test the components, and do trust no one!
Lol
Well if you think about it the seller got scammed. There was nothing wrong
Oh that patreon idea sounds awesome dude! I'd 100% support that!
Just built my first pc (i5 12600K) since 2012 (i7 3770). Binge watching this dudes videos filled me with both a level of confidence but also complete fear and anxiety. Back in the day everything seemed to work. But back then youtube videos like this didn't exist. As a PC builder I'm not sure whether to view this guys videos as informative or as thriller/horror. Subscribed either way.
Niceee
Man i love how you are figuring out ways to get paid yet still offer free services to people! Love you vids and can't wait for the next one as always!
i found this video just by chance after i thought i was giving up. my pc is doing the exact same thing your R9 5900x is doing. i have been looking all over and asking everyone including geek squad and nobody had a clue what was wrong. will pop up preparing automatic update and that's all it will do. i tried everything including updated bios etc. im almost certain the cpu is the problem now. thank you so much for making this video. you definitely get my follow.
when you love this playlist so much that you knew the issue with the 5900x before he put it in the machine. good times man
Can't believe you've been buying parts for this series! You should definitely start a Patreon for parts
We do have a Patreon again - though I haven't committed all funds to FoF parts. We use proceeds to fund our Minecraft server as well as upcoming merch.
@@GregSalazar Good to know Greg. Love the channel man
Thanks!
very very similar issue with my 5800x/3080. Swapped PSU, still does it under load randomly. I was thinking it might be the MOBO. Thanks Greg
I had the same issue and swapped everything out except the cpu so far, added a + .025 offset voltage to the core and fixed my issues, seems like pbo is being too conservative or my chip is degrading either way yours may need more juice to stay stable
@@kronicrelief8364 thanks man, I'll give that shot
OMG THE SEMPITERNAL VINYL IN THE BACKGROUND. I LOVE YOU GREG
I wonder if the tiny noctua cooler with a loose mount killed the memory controller? The 5800X runs pretty hot even with a 360mm AIO unless you undervolt it.
If not it was most likely still throttling like hell while under load.
That's an NH-U12S. It's a fairly competent cooler, and the 5800x only runs hot if you have PBO on.
Hi from an Aussie.... Easily one of the best Channels ( Liked and Subscribed )
Wow- I totally expected that graphics card to do the same exact thing after repasting it. Great job.
Still solved the issue and saved his GPU. Thank you for teaching us. Happy Halloween.
Well done on that GPU, Greg.
Awesome work, thank for helping out this fan!
and shame on the jerk who misrepresented this PC when selling it.
Really good video Greg ! Glad to see you saved another expensive GPU. Unfortunate about that 5800X, has me a little scared now but so far 6 months in daily use my 5800X still has no problems
I recommend undervolting it,the power settings on these are too high from the factory since it defaults to the same power draw as a 5900x.
@@ffwast thank you ! Will do
@@ffwast Agreed, same with the older 3600x, mine under auto boost was into crazy voltage, starting to think its a issue across the range.
@@somerandom7215 I don't mean auto boost,I mean the standard default specifications.
Yep. Undervolted my 5800x. Do it!
Greg you are a shining beacon in the tech world and i cannot express how much of an absolutely amazing man you are! Bless you and your family and all the wonderful things you do for people. I wish i lived in florida just so i could come shake your hand sir! Thank you from so many people who need help!
Great job with the GPU. Freaking crazy the amount of faulty Ryzen CPU's. Love the content, I'm always learning something.
I think the amount of Ryzen CPUs is just because of their popularity. You'd see more dead Intel CPUs if there were more Intel CPUs in rigs.
@@crazzluz1702 statistically there are far more intel systems than AMD systems.
@@RT-gaming that's literally not true. Amd has been far more popular among regular consumers for years.
@@crazzluz1702 It literally is true lmao. AMD is growing market share but intel still holds a demanding lead. Amongst niche enthusiasts you may be right but theres no way to actually quantify that and it only makes up a small percentage of users. Based on market share statistics however Intel wins hands down, and that can be proven.
I dont know why but I feel very happy for owner of this PC
These videos are very informative for someone was like me who knew nothing I think you for teaching me and others cos I can say from your videos I can and have confidently built diagnosed and fixed my pc on numerous occasions thanks Greg
Could it possibly be a BIOS version issue? It may be an older bios that does not support the combination of CPU/RAM.
This is gigabyte issue.
wow this episode is one of the best, showing that gpu thermal application is rlly important and also I had a 2600k that worked dual channel on a h61 board but didn't on a z79 guess my problem was just the motherboard
The previous owner really nearly tanked that pc to the ground
Amazing job Greg! I've learned so much from your videos that I've even learned to troubleshoot my own hardware problems!
Truly amazing content, keep up the good work! ❤
With the 5900x, You should make a video delidding it because it could be that there is no contact between the dye and the IHS, causing it to overheat then shutdown.
really giving back to the community, love this
first woo
Did you try slot a1 and b1? I know some motherboards will still run dual channel in those slots as well?
One of the most informative series for teaching individuals on how to fix a broken PC! Keep it up Greg
not all heroes wear capes but defiantly Sir. Salzar should, appreciate all the knowledge and experiences your sharing with us and narrowing the issues that we might have in the future and how to fix them. cheers sir. Salazar.
oh man! you are doing this series for free and collecting money for repairs, you are so wholesome, you are between the best people in the world, you are as amazing as vettel or keanu!
Amazing series, loved this episode! Keep up the amazing work, we are all learning from this.
I enjoy whenever these come up in my recommendations. I wish I could just subscribe to a playlist of these!
Greg, you're a really good guy. Just want you to know. Love your channel. Also that background music is so good.
You’re amazing Greg!
Thoroughly enjoy this series.
I have exactly same GPU (2nd hand) and had same issue. Little bit of paste in the centre but no paste at the corners. Before re-paste I had core temp 102°C and 114°C hotspot running Time Spy Extreme. New thermal paste lowered temps to 76°C/94°C.
Such a great series and you are such a good person for doing this. You are the man Greg.
Nicely done. I had a Ryzen 7 2700 that also had a dead memory channel. Ran it in single channel for years, it was perfectly fine.
Stop drinking
I absolutely love this channel, I'm so happy I've subscribed!
Love the framed Starset & BB vinyls on the wall, great bands.
I would happily donate to a hardware fund, I don't join any creators on a per month cost for personal reasons but the idea of helping to get others a working PC makes me smile.
my pc was power cycling, thankfully I watch your vids and because of that I managed to fix it myself, thanks a lot king.
Hi Greg
Never seem to have a broken Pc have the same twice. Always enjoy learning from you.
This is the series I never missed an episode. Big thumbs up Greg.
Kind of messed up the original seller blocked the dude, nice to see you help this dude out :)
Interesting video, it was nice that you were able to fix the video card. At least the machine is working now.
Great job again Greg! love your playlist!
Very nice, atleast now he knows and changing the cpu is really easy.
Best of luck!
i love watching these videos. i also love trying to guess what part is the bad one
