    UPDATE: Golden triangle sizes and fonts both vary on authentic AMD chips: twitter.com/gregsalazaryt/status/1592635966044639232?s=46&t=TVyeHxdN5wQyknjxbvwShw
    Sleuths in the AMD subreddit have apparently confirmed the 3950X to be fake. I’m having AMD take a closer look at it for verification. This would be the first time I’ve run into a counterfeit Ryzen chip. Keep an eye out. Will link the post below to help others out with the tell-tale signs of a fake:

    Fix or flop has taught me so much. I'm not a pc builder by any means and it seemed very intimidating. I even had best buy assemble mine a year ago. But as I watched the fix or flop series, I learned about the plethora of mistakes they made. Things like not using dual channel RAM slots, installing my fans backwards... small things like that. Watching Greg disassemble and reassemble and test and retest over the past few episodes made me feel pretty confident about fixing all those issues I had myself and even upgrading a bunch of parts. Thanks for making it accessible. Love the content, keep it up!

I had to troubleshoot a rig for a friend who is completely in the dark regarding PC stuff. Once the both of you learn the basics, then you carry that along with everything in life. You troubleshoot most electronics in the same way. From computers to dryers/washers /cars/ air conditioners etc. So once you learn the order of operations for said unit, you will be using that across the board. Get a good work mat and a good set of tools and a voltage meter to start with. Then you can start adding items like a psu tester, spare mobo and cpu and gpu. Best of luck fellas

      Physically its easy... simply narrow down the sources of error bit by bit.
      -Clear cmos
      -Check connections.
      -Plug out all conections from the frontpanel, sata, keyboard, etc...
      -Then gpu, if you have a intern grafic cpu plug the monitir on the mainboard otherwise replace gpu
      -take out all ram and try one stick in one chanel for every chanel and stick
      -check psu
      -change and CLEAN(pins) components thats are sus
      In basic you only need cpu, mainboard and one stick of ram, from there it should be easy to find the error. And sometimes it helps by simply rebuild it back...

    Really liked how that build looked. I have one in an O11d with similar parts (Exact AIO and fans) myself, his cable management is great. And special shoutout for the flipped AIO rad so the tube goes on the left to not block the rgb fans (I've seen it in so many O11D builds with the tube going to the right over RGB fans which is fine but i prefer it not going over the fans for aesthetic reasons.)
    Always loved your troubleshooting methods greg. this also teaches us not to short cut it and assume which part is broken before doing a full troubleshoot and end up replacing the wrong part :)

    Wow! What a wild one that one was! Dead CPU. That's another AMD bad/damaged chip, Greg; do you have any concern at the number of chips you've seen AMD wise with problems that they may have some sort of higher fail rate than an Intel chip, Greg?

    • @GregSalazar
      @GregSalazar  Год назад +4

      Will be reviewing the issue in greater detail in a dedicated video here soon. It is definitely something worth noting.

    • @DasLooney
      @DasLooney Год назад +1

      @@GregSalazar Yeah I figured you'd be concerned, you've mentioned it on a past 1 or 2 shows. It may be that you/we're seeing more problematic AMDs vs Intel because that's what your viewers are using more but dunno. If anyone can catch/discover this potential issue it's someone like you!

  • @davidodea5799
    @davidodea5799 Год назад +6

    The problem with the AMD Zen 2 failures is that 99% of the builds that you receive, and fix, are in fact, AMD.
    If it was an equal 50/50 split between received platforms, I wonder how many Intel chips would be defective?
    I'm betting a few.

    In this day and age no PC component is beyond suspect to be the problem! I have seen so many videos now of new PCs having issues with high priced components like video cards, CPUs or memory! This was a great video showing even an expert like you having your assumptions dashed and needing to check all components to find the the culprit!

    I think that was a fake 3950x Greg… the arrow in the bottom left is bigger than the 3950x should be. Earlier ryzen chips had that bigger triangle and zen 2 and 3 had a smaller one.

    I once made a comment on your page about how you were "rewarding" the PCDC viewers who let it get that dirty... you responded explaining yourself and I felt like a jackass. ANYWAYS moral of the story: I've been viewing ever since cause I respected you for sticking up for not only you but those who had the dirty system in the first place. Seeing how you not only clean and replace the parts as a surprise for some folks but you quite literally just helped a father insure his kids Christmas gift was gonna work... you're a hell of a guy Greg, glad I made that stupid comment a while back LOL cause I found a pretty down to earth creator in the process. In the off chance you see this like the last comment apologies for getting off on the wrong foot keep up the killer work man.

    The requirements for the CPU warranty is crazy I contacted them,
    they wanted a list of everything I tried to resolve the problem.
    and then wanted the board name current bios on the board
    then they wanted you take a picture of the CPU on the board
    with the part and serial number clearly visible.
    So I took my losses and just bought a new CPU
    because I knew that's what it was,
    but in all fairness I had it in a MSI GAMING EDGE X570 WIFI board
    I also learned to stay clear of those as well

    To this day I’m still scared to play world of warships on my 3090 rig because that’s the game that fried that GPU multiple times until I replaced the PSU and motherboard through RMA

    This is the exact same issue my brother had, same symptoms, ended up replacing motherboard thinking it was the issue. Didn't have another CPU to test but once we got the new motherboard, realised it had to be the CPU as it still was doing the same thing. Was the same generation of CPU to (3900X).

    I have run into a similar problem with the power cable going from the wall to the power supply being bad. It was such a nightmare switching out parts that I knew worked and not understanding why I couldn’t get it to work. Then I swapped the power supply cable and it powered right up. It was the simplest, most complicated issue I’ve ever solved.

    I built in this case the other day actually, there's quite a few hidden connectors that came in this case, had to pull them all out and found a few more to plug in before the power button worked. I hate this case and love it at the same time LOL. But, as part of this series you should consider cleaning up the wiring (my OCD talking) after you've fixed it, if there's time!

    hey greg, I just wana say with Love and Respect unto you on behalf of all those who send they pc into you and how your willing to ALWAYS freely give your own PC components in for replacements to return. It means alot just seeing u give with nothin in return , but that in hopes it returns to the user safely fixed and with the known issue resolved. also I love your studio setup gears, especially that Yamaha Mg10xu , i also use the same as well and then reason why its good is because its not just an Audio Interface , it basically has also a Mixer capability. How is it treating ya ? i know this is random but id just thpught that id throw that out there haha. Love the studio setup lol

    I just built a new PC my first 7600x was a brick the B650E-F motherboard was displaying a white light and would not post but my rgb were all lit up on the other components. I was torn between thinking it was CPU or motherboard issues I took a guess and took the CPU back and exchanged and was able to get it working. Great video. I'm guessing a lot of newer builders like myself with the same issue being very discouraged having done nothing wrong in the installation of the hardware.

    As a child I was given a Commodore 64 for Christmas that was DOA! But worst PC build issue I had was a case (Fractal Design Focus G) that would short out and FRY motherboards...the standoffs were in their proper places, and trying the motherboard outside the case afterwards didn't fix the issue (yes, I tested the two motherboards BEFORE putting them into the case). Maybe the case got warped in shipping, because I couldn't see anything out of the ordinary.
