I'm not an oil painter but I really do admire your artistic skill at creating the values in this seascape, that blend so seamlessly, and all done in 20 minutes, wow! Best wishes Gerald, UK
Love it, so much like Plein Air, you could be on that location. The color mixing tips were very true and you have a beautiful painting, in such a short time. Thank you for carrying the torch for all life-long artists, that this great gift is honored in work and beauty.
Fantastic! That was so helpful -- and impressive! I appreciate these 20-minute videos so much -- they show just how much can be accomplished based on the basics of shape, value, and temperature. So helpful!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make these brilliant demos. I always find your instruction really informed and inspirational and these 20 minute paintings are a fantastic idea. (BTW your videos on making and stretching your own canvases are truly outstanding and helped get over the fear of trying this myself)
Thank you! I just found your channel last week - you’ve got some great stuff yourself!! Have you ever been to the Portrait Society? It’s a collective of fellow Sargent worshippers. 😆
This helps me a lot! I'm tryin to paint the 'white cliffs of Dover' and they are SOOOO much white with some bluish-gray, some tiny black crags, but very 3-D. It's super hard to paint.
I`m learning about painting that it`s all about color and value mostly. I hear them all talk about reflected light or distant areas are grayer or lower value than nearer objects. Even when using a photo, the photo may not show what you know about color and perspective. I`ve heard, paint what you know, not just what you see.
@@AnnaRoseBain Yes true too. The rest of the paint what you know, not see, was based upon some photos that though beautiful may lack depth where adding in darker shadows or tweaking values up or down, can better your reference photo sometimes. ;-)
Brilliant video, and beautiful painting study,,, you captured the warm tones really nicely! Thankyou for sharing it. You've inspired me to try something similar. What do you think about doing painting studies on to oil paper? I use this paper a lot (Arches), as its a lot cheaper than panels,,,, but then on the days when I do make a good painting that I like, I wish then that I had've used a panel or canvas instead (as they're probably more archival). I was thinking though that I could frame or mount the paper studies when dry and hang them on my own wall. But Do you think others would still regard them as credible oil paintings being on paper, if i was to try to sell them.? I once saw some drawings by Leonardo in the museum. They are over 500 yrs old, and on paper! So amazing!
That’s a very good point! From what I know about Arches oil paper from other artists who use it, including Quang Ho, it is still pretty archival especially if you mount it to a panel and varnish it when it’s done. I imagine it’s a little trickier to clean than a painting on canvas but that would be my only concern. I have some arches oil paper… your comment has inspired me to pull it out for a future demo!
Thanks for reply. Looking forward to checking out Quang Ho's work( have never heard of him) Sorry to ask a small further question.... do u know what type of glue would be good to use to attach the oil paper to the wood panel? (Im trying to do everything as archivally as possible) thanks a million@@AnnaRoseBain
@@peaceforchildren4303 no problem! I use "Miracle Muck," but Rublev (Natural Pigments) also makes a great archival adhesive. An archival bookbinding glue would also work.
A nice painting done with the autopilot but with a very pleasant result. The only point where the routine failed is painting of the figures which look more like sticks. In general as mentioned pleasant and attractive.
Thanks for your answer. I do not know. I am happy with my 😢60-90 min. Certainly the more you are familiar with a subject the longer you are in autopilot and the faster you go because you do no have to experiment to solve problems. But why try to brake records ? A marketing strategy ? Well why not if it works. Good luck and have fun
I'm constantly wiping my brushes with a paper towel. If I'm switching from a light value to a dark value, or vice versa, then I'll do a quick rinse with Gamsol.
Lovely work, a self taught realist artist myself, women's art has a certain charm that I love.❤

looks like La Jolla Torrey Pines, love the sketch painting, excellent artwork! 🍃💛.
You are absolutely right! 😊
Thank you you
Love the idea of a 20 min painting. So much fun. Thank you!
That pull-back stroke you do, to soften edges, I'm gonna remember that! 👍👍
Right on!!
@@AnnaRoseBainMe too! That pull-back stroke is magic.
Really enjoying these 20 min painting videos and learning more about your process and thoughts while doing each of them! Thanks so much for sharing! 😊

Could you paint this in 20 minutes, figures and all? I agree- they needed about 5 more minutes.

Toooo late. I got burnt today. 😂 I will try this one.
Haha! Happens to the best of us. :-D
Hi ARB. Which app did you use to generate the reduced-value version of your source image? Thanks! Enjoyed the vid very much.
Hi! I used the “posterize” tool in Photoshop, after changing the image to black and white and setting it to just two values.
Posterize -- that was the missing word! Thanks!@@AnnaRoseBain
I have gamblin student grade paint . Will it work for that photo?
Absolutely!
You are a painting yourself. a stunning portrait
That is kind of you to say. Thank you!
Do you ever use Cad red light ? or is it cad 10:34 red medium?
I actually MUCH prefer cad red light to any of the other cadmium reds, especially in portraits. But regular ole' cad red seemed fine for this. :-)
@@AnnaRoseBain that’s an interesting subject when it comes to reds for portraits what do you like for your cool color?
I use viridian and ivory black, among other things@@allenvoss7977
How do you clean your brushes between switching colors? With gamsol?
I'm constantly wiping my brushes with a paper towel. If I'm switching from a light value to a dark value, or vice versa, then I'll do a quick rinse with Gamsol.
Is your sister also a painter?
Yes! She has a very popular watercolor channel - Emily Olson Art
Wow you look like Diana Krall...
Haha! Not the first time I’ve heard that… 😆
