- Experiment time! Having a look to see if there is a cheaper alternative to the usual blue chemical toilet fluid. May not be a mealtime watch. and thanks to Rum and Tor for their contributions in making this video.
We have used Aldi Bio tablets for years, they work for us. We saw a youtube video from Practical caravan where the expert recommended the bio tablets over the blue. Less harmful chemicals in the tablets. Thanks for the video, as you say a bit of fun with information as well. Take care both

Would have been interesting to open the lids and do a smell test too, a bacteriological count would also have been interesting as physically breaking down the structure of the waste is not the only consideration.
The old blue liquid was formaldehyde based which is pretty lethal to most bacteria, spores and viruses. Biological detergents and the modern green fluids (and some of the blues) use enzymes which will help break down the fatty structure of the waste but won't be as lethal to the bugs.
Lol. I wasn't allowed to do the smell test. It was hard to persuade Keith to do this and he is a retired science teacher😀

nice experiment, thanks. only now I wonder what it would have looked like without chemicals. I don't expect a difference, the blue or green chemical are only for the smell and not much more, (own experience after not using any chemical for for quite a while).

Thank you for this realistic, no-nonsense demo. Everything makes sense. Only that I don't know what is the Bio-tablet, etc. Please list brand names of products. Not sure how expensive is the Blue. But the extra cost is worthy of the aesthetic cover-up?
It can be any bio washing tablet that you get from a supermarket. We just use Aldi tabs as they are cheap. The Blue is a lot more expensive just to colour poo. You could always add a bit of food colouring if you didn't like the brown

Guys,I must say quite SCIENTIFIC, BUT YOU MISSED THE ‘SNIFF TEST’, They ALL seem to do the job , my vote is for a portable, with a ‘cassette tank’, roll it, or lift it to a public loo !

What about smelly. We tried the green chemical rather than Blue. It was ok but it stank after 4 days and looked very unpleasant to pour. So we have gone back to blue. Some sites only take green. Cheers from George and Jane

Superb experiment covering a subject I've never seen using actual poo. Absolute classic though when the ice cream van went past playing just One Cornett . Anyone for a popsicle? Thought not. AhAh.

We use Lidl Bio capsules. Superior to the blue as it also prevents build up of limescale. With the blue I had to use a soak in white vinegar at the end of our four months touring to remove limescale build up in the cassette. With bio capsules no limescale.
I thi k we will be using bio capsules from now on because of price, environmental reasons and because of what you say.

@elnubnub A little bleach ( household and not in really High concentrations ) won't even harm the functionality of a septic tank as stated above, yes this surprized me too when I learnt this. After speaking to a farmer he said the same, it's not like lots of bottles will be poured into it at once, that would be bad. Bleach is harmful apparently to the rubber seals in chemical toilets so watering it down and avoiding pouring it down the bowl from the top hitting the flap with the seal should be avoided if possible. Hope this helps 👍
Even the insurance company recommend we put bleach or even anti freeze down the toilet when we drain the caravan down for winter.

i tried the bio capsules last year , have gone back to the blue this year , its £9 for the big 4l own brand bottle at brownhills and it smells much nicer -)
That's not a bad price Ian. We are going to give the capsules a go for the rest of this year and then decide whether to go back to blue

I bet that bio capsule one smelt worse than the blue. I tried it in a loo and it was harder to drop the waste as the bio didn’t break the smell down and it was horrible haha. I stick with the blue stuff.
Lol. We didn't do the sniff test so can't comment on that. The stuff is fermenting nicely so we may have to do a sniff test
I was waiting for the Yuck or Pong Ratings when you emptied them. Perhaps a good option would be to mix the blue and bio liquid - might be more pleasant to empty then? Most of the toilet stuff is bio-friendly here in New Zealand as many campsites are on a septic tank. Ironically its not much cheaper to buy eco-friendly washing liquid instead of the official toilet stuff, no Aldi or Lidl chains here sadly.
We have been asked to do a follow up, so watch this space. Somebody suggested adding a bit of food colouring to make it look more pleasant

It was household loo paper. That's what we have always used anyway. To be honest, we didn't know there was a chemical toilet type, so we have learned something there. Thanks for watching our toilet tales. Not our (ahem) usual type of video.

LOL As Lindsay says we have used tablets for years. Aldi Almat works a treat for us. We do not get the residue you seemed to get LOL. Blue also contains Formaldehyde which is a preservative....... no thanks I do not want to preserve what goes in my tanks. Thanks for sharing guys but a sh*t video 😂🤣😂🤣😂

We didn't try that so couldn't really say. Since making this video we have got rid of the toilet and now use a Trelino separating toilet. The video about that is here.

Haahahaha... Do you want some more poo.. Only small ones but lots of them.. How did you get the dogs to stand still to wipe their bums... Just a note.. The blue is a disinfectant.. The others are detergent and have a very high quantity of salt in them.. So the detergent, over time will attack the rubber seals and wires to the level indicators on Thetford and types of porta potties... That was a great video professors..

use the blue or poop in the bushes… everything else is a torture that takes away all the fun of camping
We find that the washing capsules work fine and it is just the same as when you use the blue. Emptying the loo every few days isn't really a hassle for us and doesn't detract from the fun of a few days away.
