1- The Socratic Method : A Prectioners Handbook 2- Limitless 3- Thinking Fast And Slow 4- Moonwalking With Einstein 5- The Wisdom Of Insecurity 6- The Almanac Of Naval Ravikant
Caught your click-bait title, and stayed to the end. Having read 3 of the books you listed (Limitless, Moonwalking with Einstein, Think Fast/Slow) I have to say you made a great list and you have motivated me to read the other 3 now. I've already been reading Plato's 'The Republic' which tells a story of Socrates having a discussion/debate with multiple men. Its a long read and I think a shorter book on just the Socratic Method is a wiser choice to pursue. Bravo to you Sir, and thank you for the great book recommendations here.
I agree with you about books like “The Republic” and “The Last Days of Socrates” which can be harder reads to get through and won’t lay out actionable advice (although as source material, is worth a read if one has the interest and time). Thanks for the comment! 🙏
Interesting sounding list, I'll check it out when I can. When you have time, please look at I'm OK, You're OK. You mentioned The Socratic Method should be mandatory in High School, another is The Discoverers by Daniel Boorstin.
Right on kyle!!! I found the editing in this very smooth. I also appreciated the humor. Keep this style coming. One book I can recommend (more for people skills rather than personal thought but it definitely counts) is Leaders Eat Last. By Simon Zinek. These content styles go far. I notice you van speak very very well. Perhaps a short video on your speech practices ??? Keep her comin man
Thanks for the comment, it’s much appreciated! I haven’t read Leaders Eat Last, but have definitely seen it around and will have to add it to my reading queue. Thanks for the compliment!
The reason that critical thinking is more and more important because AI can’t do critical thinking. As AI becomes more and more important, critical thinking becomes more and more important. I was waiting for “Thinking Fast and Slow” and you nailed it!
I just had a conversation on this same point with a close friend the other day! Critical thinking is more needed than ever with the increasing reliance on AI. We don’t want our intellectual capacity to atrophy as that would put us at risk of over reliance on technology, and the threats that could come with that.
Some Extraordinary popular Delusions and Madness of Crowds by Charles Mackay. First Published in 1841 is my number one pick. this book shows how stupid / crazy/ politicized and ignorant people use to be. Then how the general population has progressively gotten worse in the last 200 years.
I guess it went over your head that I referred to him as a “bad actor” in reference to joining his political party…In no way do I endorse Trudeau. He is the worst politician in Canadian history and I believe he should be reprimanded for the damages he’s inflicted on this country.
The problem with the Socratic method is that - if you can get the other person to accept your definition of terms - you can use it to steer the exchange in whatever direction you want it to go. For example : Are Nationalists Patriotic ? Yes. Therefore Patriots=Nationalist. Were the Nazis Nationalists ? Yes. Therefore Patriots=Nationalists=Nazis. Were Nazis Racists ? Yes. Therefore, Patriots=Nationalist=Nazis=Racists. This is a bad example but unfortunately not an uncommon one.
I see your point, and for that reason I view the Socratic method as more of a reasoning tool than a perfect way to arrive at a truth claim. Use a tool right, and you build the Taj Mahal. Use a tool wrong, and you’ll cut off your hand. Although I think if used correctly by someone competent with logic, it can be a great way to get down to first principles. The problem lies when someone either: a) doesn’t understand how to form logical arguments or arrive at logical conclusions, or b) is making an argument in bad faith. The average person is likely to commit logical fallacies regardless of the method they choose to arrive at a conclusion. But good point you’ve made 👍
No you can't. Intelligence is largely genetic and cannot be substantially increased. Just like no amount of physical training will let me run a 4.5 40 or dunk a basketball. You can increase your knowledge and wisdom though.
Well, I disagree. Depending how you define intelligence, there is a certain amount that is fixed of course, and a ceiling for which each individual can attain. But this doesn’t mean that you can’t increase your capacity to improve the levers that affect intelligence. Memory, pattern recognition, mental agility, knowledge recall, etc. These can all be improved. Mental models can be learned. If you want to go through life thinking you have a fixed intelligence, be my guest. I’ll be over here trying to improve what I can control. Maybe you can’t run a 4.5 40, or dunk a basketball, but surely you can improve your speed and vertical jump from where they currently are through targeted training and discipline. Same goes for intelligence. I’m not promising anyone can become Einstein, but for all intents and purposes, you can increase your intelligence from its baseline.
I think there is some moral wisdom to be learned from religious text, but I wouldn’t include that in my list. With all due respect, as a non-religious person who has read excerpts from various religious books, I’m skeptical of using those books as a source of factual truth.
Never judge a book by its cover! - Curious, why do you dislike JP? I definitely don’t agree with many of his view points, but I’m glad that he has a platform. Also, I’ve read 2 of his books and thought they were quite overrated.

Education without salvation equals damnation.
Well, I’ll be damned. By salvation, are you referring to the belief in god?
like number 666 and comment 33 let's goooo
LFG! 😈
Unsolicited advice, no more clickbait.
You blew your advocacy for critical thinking when you posted Trudeau in your opener.
I guess it went over your head that I referred to him as a “bad actor” in reference to joining his political party…In no way do I endorse Trudeau. He is the worst politician in Canadian history and I believe he should be reprimanded for the damages he’s inflicted on this country.

With God on your side, anything is possible.
The Holy Bible should be #1 on the list! To get smarter fast...start with Proverbs & Palms.
