Glazunov: Violin Concerto - Silvia Marcovici, violin; Stokowski conducts the LSO

  • In 1972, Stokowski celebrated his 90th birthday and also the 60th Anniversary of his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra. To mark these two events, he conducted the LSO at the Royal Festival Hall in the same programme that they'd played in 1912. It included the Glazunov Violin Concerto which in 1912 had been played by Efrem Zimbalist. For the 1972 anniversary repeat it was performed by Silvia Marcovici. This is the only extant film of Leopold Stokowski conducting a violin concerto.

To hear Ms Marcovici live involves not only appreciating the sound she makes, pure intonation and singing tone, but her amazing beauty. A video for the ages.

I was lucky enough to be present on that wonderful ocassion. There was a gala dinner afterwards -which I did not attend- when Stokowski, seated across the table to Marcovici, pass to her a paper napkin where he had written: ?; to which she wrote back: !

After a few tots of Scotland's finest, dozed off, woke up to Bach's finest, then young Marcovici showed up and realised I was in Heaven ! RUclips certainly produces some Punch.

Wonderful playing from Ms Marcovici. Flawless, brilliant technique and expressive interpretation. The only thing I would say is that she seems to be using all metal strings, which really aren´t as good as aluminum/silver covered gut or perlon strings. Certainly one of the finest violinists of the 20th/21st Centuries.

Wonderful playing, she's certainly as good as anyone around today, and this is 50 years ago. I'm saying this because you hear so much about the fantastic standards of today, it just shows you. I was surprised that she had metal strings with 4 adjusters.

Thank you for posting this. I have been wanting to see it ever since I purchased the set of LPs containing the recording, back in 1974. In the same year, I was fortunate enough to be at the Albert Hall to see Stokowski's last public performance in the UK where, aged 92, he gave a glowing performance of Brahms's 4th symphony with the New Philharmonia Orchestra. Sadly, no video or film recording was made of that concert, but it is available on a BBC Legends audio CD.

As Alf Charlton says Brahms 1st symphony was played in the second half, followed by Tchaikovsky's Marche Slave as an encore. The demand for tickets for this concert was so great it was repeated at the Albert Hall a few Days later when I understand many more encores were given. Unfortunately I missed this occasion. I'm pleased I at least saw Stokowski once, probably one of the twentieth centuries most controversial conductors next to Von Karajan.
