- Billy Crystal as Fernando interviews New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner in a skit from "A Comedy Salute To Baseball" -- part of NBC's All-Star Game programming in 1985.
Just rediscovering these.
I loved Fernando's Hideaway when they first ran.
But looking back at them 35 years, I have a whole new appreciation of Billy Crystal's comedic genius. We was GREAT back then.
And then I got to thinking about a new Hideaway that might be funny.
I THINK what makes the Hideaway so funny is the ad-libbing.
Which led me to a new Hideaway idea that might be very funny today.
How funny would it be if Crystal's Fernando interviewed Will Ferrell's Harry Caray? With both of them riffing.
That could be hilarious.
Steinbrenner did a great job of keeping a straight face at some hilarious Crystal lines.
Fernando's Hideaway was the apex of SNL comedy in 1985. Wish they would release more of them.

Love Fernando and George. George was really a great person. When I was a 12 year old boy i watched the Yankees play a local University team in an exhibition match. I saw him sitting in the stands a few rows up and I decided to walk up and introduce myself. I remember him being very kind…he chatted with me and signed my Yankees jersey. Great person.
Man i miss the good ole' days! Bless you Billy Crystal, and everyone at SNL!

I used to have a VHS tape of NBC's A Comedy Salute to Baseball- Wish I could find it. Billy Crystal does his Security Guard routine with Mickey Mantle at the Baseball Hall of Fame. Classically funny!
