Thanks for uploading this episode, fantastic performance of Janis with Big Brother and the Holding Company. I note for this performance the band are using Fender guitars and Rogers drums, even though they were known for playing Gibson guitars. This would have been because their label Columbia owned Fender and Rogers at that time and gave them musical gear , an endorsement deal of sorts 🎸✌️
Pretty cool that BARBARA EDEN, DON ADAMS, and ARTE JOHNSON were all stars of NBC sitcoms at the time...even though this was an ABC program...or should I say....verrrry interesting
Que fabuloso hubiera sido un concierto completo con canciones de Janis Joplin con Big brother & the holding company estuvieron ESPECTACULARES.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The hottest group in the country playing regional soul music out of the USA, filtered through their particular old-timey Texas and Bay Area sensibilities.
Janis was my first concert to go to. S he sings several notes at the same time. Amazing. I wish they hadn't ruined the video with the attempt to be psychedelic.
Don Adams made Janis cry after their performance...He wasn't very nice to her....said something about her appearance which of course she was very sensitive about...God Barbara Eden is terrible... So "Lawrence Welky" ....Janis, of course, is singing live and is amazing....such a beautiful version of Summertime... Thank you for posting this treasure....
Yeah, so Welky, actually not using gimmicks and no substance flash, just talent, what was she thinking? Why cannot she present entertainment that you and your copycat, pseudo-rocker, no original thoughts, follow the crowd lemming-like friends like? The nerve of her singing where you can understand the words and your eardrum does not fall on the floor. Imagine that! The nerve to make you not conform and follow today's taste or yesteryear's rock tastes! Well, I never... and never will...be a mindless follower. And, all you people celebrating Joplin who died of a drug overdose, have never been around anyone dying of a drug overdose.
Never seen them with there Hair looking so stylish as in washed.Saw Janice and her Kosmic Blues Band in 1969 a year after this video . She had left Big Brother by then.
Janis had bought a house in larkspur up the hill in marin co, in town one time I took the book about her short life and looked up the place it had a big redwood tree growing out of the front room they had built around it.
I've heard of it, but never seen it. It's great that we can watch obscure TV shows like that on RUclips, which we would never be able to see otherwsie.
To watch "THE HOLLYWOOD PALACE" is like reliving a nostalgic and valuable journey back to ABC-TV's better days, decades before the likes of "DANCING WITH THE STARS",which i wouldn't waste a second on,much less the ABC of 2016,which has become as bad as NBC today,if not worse!
Get Smart is an all time favorite of mine, too. Have you ever seen the show he did after, "The Partners"? There were a few episodes floating around youtube last I checked. It's kind of like Get Smart as a 1970s cop show.
I just love how DA would say something funny and you would hear laughter but than you would span shot of the audience and you would get deadpan look from everyone!!! LOL Laugh Track anyone!? The Castro Brothers were a Mexican version of Sergio Mendes/Brasil 66'. I call this kind of music Cocktail music - really called Bossa Nova music - have a box CD set of this type of music from the 1960's. Love me some JJ...great performance!
Really? I saw several folks laughing. But, yep, they might have edited a laughtrack into it a bit. See, people back then did not just swooningly, fawningly approve of everything a celeb did on stage, unless of course, the audience members were 14.
The shot of the audience @ 44:33 kinda sums up 1968..... The grey guy looking around as though he was witnessing a mugging & looking to get out...... Dear God ! Janis was great!
Just came to watch this fun old clip. What's with the hate-rants on Don Adams? Maybe younger people didn't grow up with these variety shows and don't get that everything is scripted and a bit stiff. Shows like this were condescending, even derisive to "hippie types" and understandably so, given how strange and new this seemed at the time. And while Janis Joplin, Hendrix, etc. are revered and remembered, the vast majority of these "counter-culture" geek acts have been properly forgotten. It's silly to judge something from fifty years ago by a contemporary perspective.
abcbatman1966 Pansy ass "Smug JackAsses w/ White (Gloves) pretending to be real when their egotistical frauds who wouldn't know what it means to be for the cause
I didn't know Barbara Eden could sing and dance. I wonder if she ever had a nightclub act. I thought she was terrific!! My new favorite band: Brothers Castro!!!
She did, but I did not know that she was such a smooth dancer. I do believe though, that she was originally a dancer. Back then with few exceptions, you had to do more than one thing to be successful in showbiz. You would be surprised at how many talents actors, and TV folks had back then, ones they had to exhibit off camera in order to move in front of the camera. Very few back then made it big before 35.
Shows like this the whole family sat around watching. Kids had to sit through all the lame acts to see Janice. Generally followed by an argument about the war. Good ole days
" Hip " acts in those days were swimming against a tide of cheesy acts , and an audience that had no idea what they were trying to put across , or viewed them as vagabonds or freaks .
I used to do a pretty good impression of Don Adams. Would you believe I sounded just like him? Would you believe I sounded like Peter Lorre? How about Tiny Tim?
These were the days when a rock group appeared on a show like this, the host made fun of them. "OK kids, here they are......." as if to make an excuse to the adult viewers.
At the time when I saw this I wasn’t impressed. However now, as a pensioner with some time on my hands having buried my wife and everyone else, except my cold sons, I appreciate it more.
Can someone tell me if that is Glenn Close in the Lysol advert.? It looks like her. Honestly, I click on these old shows exclusively for the commercials.
Oldsmobile Station Wagon with those panoramic windows in the roof side. How American it looks like! Muscle cars into the era of big cars, as the new 1967 Thunderbird of Ford, the Olds Toronado, the Camaro and Mustang, Dodge Challenger, Cadillac, etcetera. Well, talking about show, I can say Don Adams as hoster did well. Barbara Eden there look older than 2019. XD Christian, from Santiago de Chile, SouthAmerica.
Scott Pepper... everybody ENDS a corpse. It's what we do between While alive. Janis was anything but a corpse. Forever young. An immortal talent who died young from trying to meet the expectations of thankless walking CORPSES who NEVER deserved her in the first place
Those people frolicking on the beach with a football look old enough to drink something stronger than Pepsi. I'd say they are all older than college kids. (39:18)
george: i offered these men a lift to the showers after practice" oooowwhee. janis" well it's like your feelin' some weed vibes and then up the game with some herion"
The Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser ad was funny to me since it was later the car on "That 70's Show" and that's the first ad I've seen of that car. Most of the stuff on this show is boring though compared to Big Brother and the Holding Company!
Ohhh that effect feels like Janis and big brother are behind a plastic sheet ...come on now they had better effects and that audio mishap at the beginning I feel that they were shady .....lol 🤣 I bet Janis and big brother just wanted out of there fast ....lol it's just my opinion and what I see. Don't take it to heart.
In my opinion, this is the most beautiful version of Summertime that I have ever heard. Janis was in her best moment, really.
Southern comfort will do that.....

🎸✌️
The studio audience was enthusiastic, polite and very well-dressed!
What a great trip back in time! I remember this show fondly. Thank you so much for this.
LOVE JANIS JOPLIN
Don Adams did a great job guest-hosting. And GET SMART is a comedy classic, chiefly because Don did a great job as Maxwell Smart.
Pretty cool that BARBARA EDEN, DON ADAMS, and ARTE JOHNSON were all stars of NBC sitcoms at the time...even though this was an ABC program...or should I say....verrrry interesting
Oh dear. Those were the days.
And wow. Don Adams looks pretty good.
The host didn’t expect such an educated answer from Janis lmao
the most beautiful version of summertime! great janis!
Thank You!! Janis Joplin with Big Brother & the Holding Company: "Summertime" & "I Need A Man to Love" 20:44
Janis Joplin and Don Adams
-together at last.
I love you janis, you will always have a piece in my heart 💕💕
Janis Joplin and I Dream of Jeanie's, Barbara Eden,....now that is VARIETY!
Don Adams is fantastic! I loved Get Smart growing up, used to imitate him all the time.
Summer time baby!! Thank you Janice! Albin and Gurley were tremendous!! I dug it babies.
Muy Buenos Estos Programas
Que fabuloso hubiera sido un concierto completo con canciones de Janis Joplin con Big brother & the holding company estuvieron ESPECTACULARES.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
OMG thx so much for posting. this is fabulous. I was born in 1966, a babe in the middle of this. Repeats were not available.
The Brothers Castro are very good as well!
One of these morniiiings...!!! Janis Lyn Joplin LIVE Forever and ever...!!!!
I’m dead serious here. I want to find a way to time travel back to this day and age. I need a flux capacitor.
"NO MARTY! YOU CANNOT RISK DAMAGING THE SPACE TIME CONTINUUM!".
Just kidding! Take me with you!
I love to time travel to those days again.
Have to find a way around the grandfather paradox🧑🏽🎓
Live in the now!
Write the novel.
Don is good
What a funny man he really is
Great show. No numbers at the top this time.great.
The hottest group in the country playing regional soul music out of the USA, filtered through their particular old-timey Texas and Bay Area sensibilities.
Too many legends together.
I was born and raised in Ms. Joplin's hometown of Port Arthur, Texas. It saddened me when I heard that Janis had died of a drug overdose.
Gotta love those good old commercials!
The most beautiful version!
Don Adams and Janis Joplin. 'Nuff said.
Janis was my first concert to go to. S he sings several notes at the same time. Amazing. I wish they hadn't ruined the video with the attempt to be psychedelic.
Do you know how awesome you are for posting this? Especially with the commercials included?
Happy to share these shows with folks who really appreciate the material! Thanks for the comment. :)
These are really good. I knew Barbara Eden could sing, but dance, too? Wow!
These shows are an excellent time capsule of the era.
After "I DREAM OF JEANNIE" became a success, she began to demonstrate her singing and dancing abilities on various variety shows- including this one.
Barry I. Grauman she was very talented and of course, one of the most beautiful women of her (or any) day.
Barbara Eden was ever boys fantasy growing up. in the 1980's she toured with Robert Goulet in "south Pacific".
Thumbs up, Thank-you for the trip back to 1968, I needed it .
Memory lane.
Brothers Castro were really good. The musicians i say.
Janis Queen!

I was here just for the Fried Onion Rings advert, worth it. :D
Never saw this one thanks for sharing
Never seen them with there Hair looking so stylish as in washed.Saw Janice and her Kosmic Blues Band in 1969 a year after this video . She had left Big Brother by then.
Enjoyed the Castro Brothers' beautifully harmonized rendition of "Michelle ".
Janis had bought a house in larkspur up the hill in marin co, in town one time I took the book about her short life and looked up the place it had a big redwood tree growing out of the front room they had built around it.
I wonder, how many of these HB shows still survive. If all still do, what a treat they all must have.Perhaps more then the Sullivan shows have.

Beatles & Paul's Michelle, this also shows how their talent was so recognised by other performers from Sinatra to Pinky & Perky!

Wow, consistent high-level performances!
"I remember Elvis as a young man hanging around the Sun studios. Even then, I ..... is my man." Janis Joplin

Yeah, its not like those in the audiences today, sycophantily screaming and laughing because "..a celebrity says its great."
Great blast from the past.
Janis was looking goooood!!!! Poor thing… in 2 years she would be dead… go to Wiki and look up the "27 Club". God Rest their Souls.
Don Adams was Tennessee Tuxedo lol
And Inspector Gadget!

hollywood palace ran from 1964 to 70
Forgot how great Artie Johnson was.
I didn't know Barbara Eden could sing and dance. I wonder if she ever had a nightclub act. I thought she was terrific!!
My new favorite band: Brothers Castro!!!
She wasn't singing live. Notice she didn't have a microphone and a boom microphone wasn't following her around.
Most tv performances prerecorded their singing.
She did, but I did not know that she was such a smooth dancer. I do believe though, that she was originally a dancer.

Thanks

30:40- 31:10 Station break (while the network is "dark", local affiliates are showing commercials, promos and a station I.D.)
I used to do a pretty good impression of Don Adams.
Would you believe I sounded just like him?
Would you believe I sounded like Peter Lorre?
How about Tiny Tim?
That quip about Dean Martin, wow! Ouch!! Although, he was never secretive about it.
It was a running joke. He really drank apple juice on his show.
Thanks, someone did tell me that it was a gag. I am too young to remember this, but I did like his act and that voice!!
@@ddivincenzo1, he drank and had a problem=fact.
and the cigarette commercial..beautiful

Please take me back to this time...I will behave...I promise .

Described as at "Hollywood and Vine", it was on Ivar wasn't it? Doesn't much matter I suppose, but I was there.
I think it was filmed at The Avalon Ballroom on Vine St.
LOL... HILARIOUS....
Enhanced or canned laughter during Adams monologue for sure. Most stoned faced audience for a variety show.
MY QUEEN OF BLUES
Nina Simone said it best, "Janis Joplin was playing to a bunch of corpses..." as she said with a laugh!
Janis ended up being that corpse unfortunately...
The ungrateful dead.
Scott Pepper... everybody ENDS a corpse. It's what we do between While alive. Janis was anything but a corpse. Forever young. An immortal talent who died young from trying to meet the expectations of thankless walking CORPSES who NEVER deserved her in the first place
@Veronica A. Bunch of bullies in this comment section. Gets worse every year.
Arte Johnson loved to poke fun at the Russians! That sort of thing would be frowned upon today.
I'm from the East Coast I don't remember this
can you still by onion rings because i really
want some lol after seeing that comercial
The American Broadcasting Company is no longer the innovative and dynamic television network it used to be.

Those people frolicking on the beach with a football look old enough to drink something stronger than Pepsi. I'd say they are all older than college kids. (39:18)
which 1 of those Castro brothers got tht high pitched voice? Sorta like Sergio Mendez.

I knew that Barbara Eden was a talented singer! She didn't scream like Joplin did.
God, Don Adams was a class a jerk. 😵💫
No, he was a comedian who PORTRAYED class A jerks.
Coach comet. In Rudolph the red nose reindeer
No, that was a mimic.
Barbara Eden could have sung Gershwin's "Summertime " a LOT better than Janis Joplin did!!
big brother is a lil WEAK!
Janis Joplin gives me a headache.
Don't take what she took, and whatever you take, watch the dosages.
She didn't.
Donald James Yarmy is a great host.
