Yeah and think of it like this too. This is before Pro Tools, and Stems and all that digital stuff. They were recording on Tape like ADAT's. That's a whole level of nightmare. Ain't no let me load this into my Daw, bump it up some levels and fix it with my VST. It was more like we gotta redo this whole thing AGAIN. RZA would have to EQ his mix from his ASR and SP1200 on deck and make sure that was right and then bring it to the studio, get Wu in the booth and have all of them lay down vocals over it and then have someone do the final mix and EQ. When he said there's only so much you can do at home he meant that for a 1990's studio. If you wanted those real "pro tools" you had to be in a real studio that had the start of the art mixing board and all the rack gear to go with it to get all those levels to stay in mix and not peak out. The challenge of those 90's was getting your mix "Radio Ready" Quality. That quality level separated the real producers from the amateurs back in the 90's. If you had that Claritin clear quality people knew you were to be taken serious as an artist and they could take your sh*t and play it anywhere. A party, a club, a radio station, your momma's house etc.
Every upcoming rapper needs to know this shit. I know nowadays they have recording software and shit you can install in ya computer or laptop? But if the song is unbalanced? It’s not good no matter how good the song is. If you wanna take ya music seriously? You gotta start getting that shit mixed and mastered. If you know people who can do it? Ask for that help! Mixing and mastering comes with a price, unless you know someone who can do it for a lesser price. Don’t cheat ya’self! If it’s a hobby treat it like a hobby, if you want to be serious? Start paying to get it mixed and mastered 💯! I learned this a few years back and I rhyme myself. I’m glad this scene was put in this episode.
Firehouse studios. Do the knowuedge on the engineer who recognised all the background resonance in wu ferst albums beats n brought them out. He gets it n still his ears are on point..o Basically his eart n enjineering are what music systems now encorgorating. Giving every sound in a beat headroom to live breathe n mature. Science of life yall but cats aint n figure out till the year 2G20
Every mix/mastering engineer felt this scene.
