When Picking Your Girl Up From The Casino Goes Wrong - High Speed Chase

- Friday, May 10, 2024, at approximately 11:40 P.M., I (Trp. Dylan Evans) observed a sedan traveling at a high rate of speed on I-40 westbound near the 278-mile marker. The sedan was in the inside lane of traffic passing a vehicle in the outside lane then placed its right turn signal on to exit I-40 at Ingram Street. I observed the sedan traveling west on the North Service Road and turned to travel north on Ingram Boulevard behind another vehicle. As the vehicle in front of the sedan turned and the roadway was clear, the sedan accelerated quickly and began traveling at a high rate of speed toward Southland Gaming and Racing. The sedan then changed lanes quickly to pass a vehicle turning into the south entrance to the casino. I attempted to conduct a traffic stop with the silver Volkswagen (displaying TN LPN: BRT2175) as it pulled into the Southland Gaming and Racing parking lot. The Volkswagen slow rolled in the parking lot for a short time, then made an abrupt U-turn and began fleeing towards Ingram Boulevard. The Volkswagen turned to travel south on Ingram Boulevard at a high rate of speed. As the Volkswagen turned to travel on Ingram Extended near the BP gas station, it almost struck a pedestrian crossing the road and forced the subject to move out of the way to avoid being hit. The Volkswagen then turned to travel east on the East Service Road and then merged onto Interstate 40 traveling eastbound. While on Interstate 40, the Volkswagen reached speeds of more than 130 miles per hour, passed vehicles on the shoulder, and showed no regard for the safety of the motoring public. Near the 281-mile marker, the Volkswagen attempted to pass between a black SUV in the inside lane of traffic and a marked West Memphis Police Department unit in the middle lane. While attempting to pass, the Volkswagen struck the driver's side of the West Memphis unit. West Memphis Detective C. Langston conducted a TVI on the Volkswagen near the 282-mile marker on Interstate 40. The driver (Thomas Lewis Jr.) exited the vehicle and was placed into custody without incident. While in the back of the unit, I advised another officer that the reason for the traffic stop was the manner of his driving on Ingram Boulevard, and Lewis spontaneously stated, “I was trying to hurry up and get her”. While speaking with Lewis in my unit, I could smell the strong odor of intoxicants coming from his breath and person. I also observed his eyes were bloodshot and watery. Lewis requested EMS to the scene because he was experiencing back pain. During an inventory search of the vehicle, I located an open 100ml bottle of Jack Daniels in the cup holder. I also located a prescription pill bottle in the front driver door panel that contained a white powdery substance. The prescription pill bottle was released to Drug Task Force agents on scene, but the substance did not field test positive as a narcotic. Crittenden EMS made the scene and transported Lewis to the Baptist Crittenden Hospital to be treated. The field sobriety test was not conducted on scene due to airbag deployment and Lewis complaining of back pain. Heck’s Wrecker Service Towed the Volkswagen. When I ran Lewis’ information his license returned suspended. While at the hospital, I informed Lewis of his Miranda Rights and he advised he drank an unknown amount of Jack Daniels before driving to the casino. I also read the Arkansas Statement of Rights form, and Lewis signed that he understood his rights, and signed stating he would take the requested breath test. Lewis was treated, released, and transported to the Crittenden County Detention Center for further testing. The arrest was made at 11:44 P.M. on 5-10-24. The BAC test was conducted approximately 4 hours later due to the Lewis being treated and the results were .045. An ALS form was completed and sent to the Department of Finance and Administration. Lewis was charged with the following: reckless driving, fleeing, criminal mischief, driving while license suspended, no insurance, open container of alcohol, and DWI.

No, I have to agree completely. I notice these people don’t use turn signals as much in real life, especially the hazard lights. Sometimes I think they do it as a “juke” move? Maybe they think that once they seduce the police with their blinker, then they’ll use a right blinker then fake them out going left ? I can’t exactly explain this one. (I wish they have special blinker for attempting to backwards park into a parking spot. They NEVER use any sort of signal when doing this move. It gets frustrating !!!)
