You can download a mod called Build 2001 for the early version of Half-Life 2 Beta. The version in this video is after they scrapped their original ideas about why the train station level is more or less the same as in retail. In earlier builds they had a different vision for the game.
I feel there is misinformation here. Even being 1 year apart would make a game very different especially in that era. Even nowadays, one year out is usually when they're actually putting the game together and they'll make drastic changes when they see what does or doesn't work. That's why this is barely a game because most work is technical tests and only in the last couple of years is there any semblance of a game.
And if you think about it, being leaked should NOT take more time. Like. Why should it? How does that disrupt anything? That's just using up more money for no reason. They up their security and just keep making things as planned. A game being delayed doesn't happen because it's leaked but because it basically becomes a massive playtest session so they know how much work they still need to put in. But this would have happened anyways with normal playtesting. A delay is inevitable.
These are just false claims that reporters make who don't understand how these things work. But also clearly gamers still don't understand how these things work either and that's why we have these long standing myths.
i saw this on the internet, don't blame me as this is all ive heard
@@ventinator0 That's like saying I can't blame you for saying the kid has autism because everyone in class is saying he has autism. I can't say that's wrong? You can say that this is alleged but that's not what you did.
This is not about pointing fingers, it's about information integrity. Let's say this is all not true, you've added ONTO to it and made claims on top of it so other people get the wrong impression on how far along games are.
If you don't have a good argument, you don't have a good argument. Don't make excuses for it. It just makes you sound less credible. I'd have just been ok with you just not being aware and so I'm just saying my 2 cents. I was just saying this doesn't sound right. I can say that. But if you're making excuses I have to call you out now.
my bad then, i phrased it wrong, i just didn't do a lot of research and just put it into the video, probably i'm not very educated about specifically half life 2 beta, and yeah, i realise how that sounded now
@@ventinator0 That's fine. Don't worry about it. I just wanted to add some extra perspective.
you can also control the train in the campaign because its a reskinned cart
DARK AND GRITTY
there are even more earlier versions, like the 2001 and 2002 version, also you missed all the campaign, it finishes on the citadel
idk where to go to skip to next map, only from console
@@ventinator0 map d1_trainstation_03, also maybe if hl2 beta doesn't crash can we play the multiplayer in the beta?
I'm kinda bored
@@Cyclop4Eye bet but add me on discord not talking in youtube comments @lazeratlantian
okay man, rn
remember em when you get to the top. 🫡
The reason the game changed a lot is because the hacking situation made the morale of the valve team go so low they changed the entire game
Edit: Yeah I guess it might have been a exaggeration and the game had already changed quite a bit and they were already going away from the initial dark 1984 theme they were going for but the hacking situation did change the morale and mentality of the Valve Team
No it wasn't.
In fact, the hacking situation didn't hurt Valve that much because they scrapped the beta way before the leak.
The reason they changed the game was because the story sucked ass and was boring. The dark and gritty 1984 theme that they planned, didn't work how they wanted.
That doesn't make any sense. It's pretty clear that the game changed significantly before the leak even happened. This build alone is far more similar to the final release than the early 2001-2002 builds.
Misinformation ahoy!
@@swordhere3396 Okay, if you think the beta story is bad, then the retail version must be too, since they're basically the same story but with fewer chapters and characters that look different from the beta. Seriously, if the story and aesthetics were that awful, there wouldn’t be so many beta recreation mods. The only differences in the beta were its more abstract art style and additional characters; the story itself progressed in the same way. By saying the beta story is bad, you’re also implying that Marc Laidlaw is a bad writer. The changes were made to showcase the Source engine’s capabilities with facial animations and to shift from an abstract art style to a more realistic one. The core story remains practically identical.

Not even close to the earliest version. Come back when you'll lay your hands on "Get your free TVs!".
you mean come back when you'll lay your hands on a hyper era build
i have the earliest version, but this is the only one that i know of that had the playable campaign, (kind of) title kinda clickbaited too but still, the 2001 build has practically nothing to show and would be boring
