I'm an Australian living in the US, watching this video out of homesickness. Brisbane is it's own little world, but I enjoy your videos and look forward to more about your travels.
@Gareth Rogers I've moved countries and states so feel like I dont have a biased perspective. I've been in Melbourne for 17 years, previous to that was Brisbane for 20 years). Love Victoria as there is so much to do here, but Brisbane is now calling because of the more relaxed lifestyle and friendlier people. Hopefully next year, covid pending!!
Brissie (Brisbane) is a much more laidback place than Sydney and Melbourne. Big enough to have everything you'd want but not too big. The winters in Brisbane are amazing but the summer can be very humid, but that doesn't matter because you are either air conditioned or in the pool.
I moved to Brisvegas in 2007, but grew up in Newcastle and spent a couple of my early 20’s years in Sydney. I always describe Brisbane in a similar way as you, Suburban like Newy, but with everything Sydney has to offer. We even have a bridge! 😂😉
@@kremepye3613 it use to, but has grown up and is now so different, even the suburbs have a good feel and has many cultural and adventurous events. Also an hour's drive north and south with pristine beaches. I remember the days when it was classed as a country town but not anymore 🙂

I live in LA area and I've also fell in love with Australia. I've only been to Sydney but visited twice. I absolutely love the city and the country so much I want to immigrate down under and be an Australian lol.
Actually I've lived in Brisbane times...never again, Townsville once. I've holiday'd in Sarina, Maroochydore, The Whit Sunday's, Cairns and Port Douglas. All give easy access to the GBR, very nice, but Townsville is the nicest with 320 days of sunshine each year. Brisbane? It's a hole. Melbourne or Sydney are far better. Or if you like the temperature of the north live in North Queensland, say; Maroochydore, Townsville or the Whit Sundays much nicer. Anything south of Brisbane has much nicer coastlines with precipitous headlands, sandy beaches, whereas anything north has long sloppy beaches that are more muddy and less sandy. But DO NOT discount going around the other side of the island. This is where dreams are fulfilled! the west Australian coast line is A MUST SEE. If you can't find a place to live from Broome in the north down to Albany in the south then you are not alive. Perth of course is STUNNING and even more beautiful and cleaner than Brisbane!!! Go back and start your travels again, but on the west side of the island!!!

Underrated, yes, not a secret though - it’s the 3rd biggest city here and a leading hub. Fantastic mix of the Sydney feeling and Melbourne culture style lite, a subtropical vibe, big but not massive big with the Gold Coast around the corner and the Sunshine Coast up the road. One could make the argument it’s the quintessential Aussie city.

I flew into Sydney at 3 AM in 2001 from the UK. I was waiting for my bag and the Aus immigration stopped me and asked me a bit much of questions. I'm pale as hell. It's just the way it is.
I’m a single white male 39 and the only thing I’ve ever gotten from customs has been “welcome home mate”. I do always seem to be taken aside for the explosives check on domestic flights though. Who knows what they look out for.
Yeah, mid 30's white AF Aussie here and whenever I travel for work I'm dressed smart, clearly my office is in my backpack, I'm organised and not wasting time getting my laptop and stuff out for the scans and most times I still get additional screening. Recently I showed up at the BNE domestic airport late one night to pick my wife up, and thought I'd meet her at the terminal gate - no bags, no ticket, no outbound flights so I was actually the only person walking through security at that time of night, and just wanted to walk through air side to meet my wife's inbound flight - yep, still got scanned.

If you plan to come. Make Brisbane your central hub. Stay at least 4 days. Beautiful beaches south and north. Amazing rainforest 30 min drive from the city. Mt Glorious. To the west is stunning Moreton Bay. Brisbane is Australia's most under rated city. In Brisbane try Roma Street Gardens. Mt Cootha lookout and Botanical gardens. City botanical gardens. Cultural Centre has Museums galore. South bank Gardens. Try the suburban centres such as west end, Paddington, new farm and bulimba. Catch a city cat ferry and cruise the river. Eat at Eat Street. Try rock climbing at kangaroo point. Go to lone pine to hug a koala. Explore Toowong Cemetery. Do a ghost tour of Boggo Road Jail. Visit the Commissariat Store museum for a taste of early life. Go visit historic Newstead house. Try the Bulimba Creek walking tracks at Carindale. Vistit the many bushlands around the city including Boondall wetlands. You will be surprised how much there is to do in this city let alone the nightlife and all the normal things. Many tourists say they wish they had planned to stay longer. Brissy is the most Australian city in the country. Melbourne is European and Sydney is cosmopolitan. Brisbane is laid back and welcoming. People smile and are happy to chat with strangers. There is very little graffiti as the council clean it off. Brisbane is very clean and modern yet still has Australis most grandest old buildings. Brisbane is more and more embracing it's subtropical climate. Many lovely flowering trees and plants. The river is brown. It's a tidal river so it will never be blue or clear. It is home to 2000 bull sharks. That's why no one swims in it. There are many Eddy's and rips under the surface you can't see. Sunrise and sunsets are stunning. Blue Sky's are common with big puffy white clouds. It's perfect weather in winter June to August. The best time of year is September. Stunning days. Summer can be stiffly hot and humid with spectacular thunderstorms most afternoons. Most of all the same comment most tourists say is they can't believe how green Brisbane is. Some have said it's a city of forests. It was voted one of the most beautiful cities of the world for it's mix of grand sandstone buildings mixed with gleaming glass skyscrapers and it's gardens and flamboyant color. Enjoy
Australia still has high bio security thankfully, for incoming tourists, because of our farm exports - No foot & mouth disease for beef, sheep & goats, no rabies & we try to keep out various insects & viruses that are harmful for the Agriculture sectors. Which is why you would have been screened by Customs & Immigration. Yes our standard of wages & living costs are high, compared to the US. but we are taxed generally fairly which does go to social Medical care & other Government services (Including over paid lazy political careerists, whom we all HAVE to vote for :s ) and as you mentioned we don't have a overly shoddy labour market .., yet., not the the Politico hacks aren't trying to ruin this society. So no really need to beg for Tips or Gratuities to make a modest living as your do an honest days work.
I once picked up a hitch hiker about seven years ago in a small outback town in South Australia called Coober Pedy. He was a white elderly guy wanting a ride to town on a hot sort of day. He jumped into my car and thanked me but I noticed he didn't have an Australian accent so I asked where he is from. He answered " here in Coober Pedy". I said " But you have a different accent ". Then he told me he originally came from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and he came to Coober Pedy as a much younger man meaning to be just visiting and then moving on but he fell in love with the town and never left. He said he plans on living in Coober Pedy until his dying day and then has a wish to be cremated and have his ashes scattered just outside of the town at a scenic desert spot called " The Breakaways ". He lives a simple sort of life. Just getting by and he sometimes rides a pushbike around town with a milk crate attached to the back which he uses for carrying shopping. A nice guy too from what I remember of our brief random meeting.
The thing I love about Australia is each city is a bit different and so easy to love, It's such a great country no matter where you go. Oh there are dives in suburbs like any other place in the world but over all it is just a great place.

I got so excited when I noticed you were walking through new farm! I used to live there before returning to the southern suburbs just outside the city. Also that grocery store you visited is an IGA which is more expensive than our three major grocery stores. But they’re locally owned and resourced so they’re good to support. Did you go out in fortitude valley? It’s so much fun. Glad you loved it!
I hope you can visit Melbourne and Tasmania. The change down the East Coast in the culture is quite noticeable and interesting. Starting in Cairns and slowly moving all the way to Hobart.
Good to see you look both ways when crossing. I've heard the most dangerous thing in Australia for right hand lane drivers is getting hit by a car because they always look the wrong way when crossing.

I lived in Brisbane for three year and loved it. While in New Farm Park you should have caught the ferry to the CBD, so nice. I love Brisbane especially the weather, that weather you were experiencing, is for 8 months of the year. A perfect English summer.
Fortitude valley is a nice suburb, and New Farm Park is amazing, if you do come again, I really suggest staying in Highgate Hill, West End, South Brisbane or East Brisbane. I grew up as a teenager in West End and Highgate Hill, and it's amazing (it's changing now with the development), but there's amazing shops, restaurants and bus stops that take you right to the city and the valley (you can even walk). Depends where you are, but it's usually less busy than the Valley

I'm so glad you loved our little corner of the planet. If you have a chance to come back please PLEASE go see any or all of the three largest sand islands in the world that sit just off the coast here, Moorgumpin (Moreton), Minjerribah (Stradbroke) or K'gari (Fraser). They will take your breath away.
You should have also gone on the ferry to our eastern suburbs like Bulimba, sooo gorgeous, a village atmosphere with heaps of good cafes with fabulous coffees etcetc,, beautiful parklands with wide views of the City and our river, of course there are other gorgeous suburbs, but going by what your saying I think you'd love Bulimba, Balmoral and Hawthorne.
If you like Brisbane, you'll also like Perth, it too is its own little world. It's approximately the same size. The difference is the weather: we get lots of sun most year round and low humidity. Winters get chilly. Summers get dry hot and have a sea breeze in the avo. I wanna check out Brizzy too coz my favourite Aussies I've met have come from either perth or brizzy on average, and melb, Sydney are too big for my humble desires :D
One of the best kept secrets here in Australia is Evans Head, NSW. 3 1/2 hours south of Brisbane just over the boarder. Sleepy little seaside township with crystal clear glassy green water. The best damn prawns (shrimp) on the planet. Really good for a quiet getaway.
I find it joyous that you enjoyed Brisbane so much. So often we pay it out here (here being anywhere that’s not Brisbane) but it really is a beautiful place to live.

I wouldn’t worry about being chosen. I was told that they do a count and choose someone after a certain number of people have gone through. I’m a middle aged white Australian woman and I get chosen often. The guy told me one time it was a numbers game
brisbane is approaching the world record " biggest urban area in the world " as it streches from the border at the gold coast al the way to the sunshine coast , uninterupted housing suburbs for 250 kilometers
As a welded on Sydney resident I have to admit Brisbane is a beautiful tropical city. Like Sydney it is a fantastic place to just walk and walk and take it all in.
Curly wurlies is English / Australian as are all the Cadbury’s products. Australia is renowned for great coffee. It was interesting watching as an Australian who lives in Brisbane and has a beach house at Noosa. I definitely think Brisbane is a great place to live. It isn’t a typical tourist destination.
Home town Melbourne lived worked Sydney but Brisbane was my favourite.Layback,great weather easy to get around not too populated nor overdeveloped, yet! New Farm(Sat.Market) is my other love.Running along the boardwalk toward town.You seemed to venture north side of town.It's nicer there near Teneriffe Ascot Windsor etc.

I'm not from Brissy, but it's probably one of the most laid back cities here & one of the warmest of the capital cities so probably one of easiest places to land in initially but other places are all different. Right back at you for the US, as there are plenty of places in the US I found equally good as here.
OMG YES!!! I noticed how healthy conscious the Aussies were too... Sure they have junk food, but the majority of Aussies eat really good ... Many I met were Vegetarian and Vegan...

Yep, visited Brisbane in 1990, moved here in 1993 only went back to US twice since. This is home.
Going to visit Australia in 2021, even plan on moving there a couple years afterwards.

Brisbane is my hometown, New Farm Park is my local park, and I’ve sat at the very same table at Cafe 63 for breakfast on many a Sunday morning.

If you plan to come. Make Brisbane your central hub. Stay at least 4 days. Beautiful beaches south and north. Amazing rainforest 30 min drive from the city. Mt Glorious. To the west is stunning Moreton Bay. Brisbane is Australia's most under rated city. In Brisbane try Roma Street Gardens. Mt Cootha lookout and Botanical gardens. City botanical gardens. Cultural Centre has Museums galore. South bank Gardens. Try the suburban centres such as west end, Paddington, new farm and bulimba. Catch a city cat ferry and cruise the river. Eat at Eat Street. Try rock climbing at kangaroo point. Go to lone pine to hug a koala. Explore Toowong Cemetery. Do a ghost tour of Boggo Road Jail. Visit the Commissariat Store museum for a taste of early life. Go visit historic Newstead house. Try the Bulimba Creek walking tracks at Carindale. Vistit the many bushlands around the city including Boondall wetlands. You will be surprised how much there is to do in this city let alone the nightlife and all the normal things.

Brissy is the most Australian city in the country. Melbourne is European and Sydney is cosmopolitan. Brisbane is laid back and welcoming. People smile and are happy to chat with strangers. There is very little graffiti as the council clean it off. Brisbane is very clean and modern yet still has Australis most grandest old buildings. Brisbane is more and more embracing it's subtropical climate. Many lovely flowering trees and plants. The river is brown. It's a tidal river so it will never be blue or clear. It is home to 2000 bull sharks. That's why no one swims in it. There are many Eddy's and rips under the surface you can't see. Sunrise and sunsets are stunning. Blue Sky's are common with big puffy white clouds. It's perfect weather in winter June to August. The best time of year is September. Stunning days. Summer can be stiffly hot and humid with spectacular thunderstorms most afternoons.
Most of all the same comment most tourists say is they can't believe how green Brisbane is. Some have said it's a city of forests. It was voted one of the most beautiful cities of the world for it's mix of grand sandstone buildings mixed with gleaming glass skyscrapers and it's gardens and flamboyant color. Enjoy

Yes our standard of wages & living costs are high, compared to the US. but we are taxed generally fairly which does go to social Medical care & other Government services (Including over paid lazy political careerists, whom we all HAVE to vote for :s ) and as you mentioned we don't have a overly shoddy labour market .., yet., not the the Politico hacks aren't trying to ruin this society.
So no really need to beg for Tips or Gratuities to make a modest living as your do an honest days work.
The reason for compulsory voting is because of a low turn out back in 1922 federal election.

I once picked up a hitch hiker about seven years ago in a small outback town in South Australia called Coober Pedy. He was a white elderly guy wanting a ride to town on a hot sort of day. He jumped into my car and thanked me but I noticed he didn't have an Australian accent so I asked where he is from. He answered " here in Coober Pedy". I said " But you have a different accent ". Then he told me he originally came from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and he came to Coober Pedy as a much younger man meaning to be just visiting and then moving on but he fell in love with the town and never left. He said he plans on living in Coober Pedy until his dying day and then has a wish to be cremated and have his ashes scattered just outside of the town at a scenic desert spot called " The Breakaways ". He lives a simple sort of life. Just getting by and he sometimes rides a pushbike around town with a milk crate attached to the back which he uses for carrying shopping. A nice guy too from what I remember of our brief random meeting.
The thing I love about Australia is each city is a bit different and so easy to love, It's such a great country no matter where you go. Oh there are dives in suburbs like any other place in the world but over all it is just a great place.
Brissy and the Gold Coast area is amazing, lots to see and do. Subtropical rainforests, beaches, waterfalls.. amazing.

I got so excited when I noticed you were walking through new farm! I used to live there before returning to the southern suburbs just outside the city. Also that grocery store you visited is an IGA which is more expensive than our three major grocery stores. But they’re locally owned and resourced so they’re good to support. Did you go out in fortitude valley? It’s so much fun. Glad you loved it!
Yep I stayed in Fortitude Valley. I loved that neighborhood. If I lived in Brisbane I’d want to live in New Farm. ❤️

I hope you can visit Melbourne and Tasmania. The change down the East Coast in the culture is quite noticeable and interesting. Starting in Cairns and slowly moving all the way to Hobart.

New farm park is one of my oldest memories as a child going there, but then I moved to Adelaide, still making memories though!

I lived in Brisbane for three year and loved it. While in New Farm Park you should have caught the ferry to the CBD, so nice. I love Brisbane especially the weather, that weather you were experiencing, is for 8 months of the year. A perfect English summer.

Fortitude valley is a nice suburb, and New Farm Park is amazing, if you do come again, I really suggest staying in Highgate Hill, West End, South Brisbane or East Brisbane. I grew up as a teenager in West End and Highgate Hill, and it's amazing (it's changing now with the development), but there's amazing shops, restaurants and bus stops that take you right to the city and the valley (you can even walk). Depends where you are, but it's usually less busy than the Valley

That feeling of uniqueness is one of the wonderful parts of travelling. Hope we can get back to international travel after Covid.
I'm so glad you loved our little corner of the planet. If you have a chance to come back please PLEASE go see any or all of the three largest sand islands in the world that sit just off the coast here, Moorgumpin (Moreton), Minjerribah (Stradbroke) or K'gari (Fraser). They will take your breath away.
You should have also gone on the ferry to our eastern suburbs like Bulimba, sooo gorgeous, a village atmosphere with heaps of good cafes with fabulous coffees etcetc,, beautiful parklands with wide views of the City and our river, of course there are other gorgeous suburbs, but going by what your saying I think you'd love Bulimba, Balmoral and Hawthorne.

Here in Australia, your 'Complexion' is immaterial, means nothing. You are 'You', the person.
If you like Brisbane, you'll also like Perth, it too is its own little world. It's approximately the same size. The difference is the weather: we get lots of sun most year round and low humidity. Winters get chilly. Summers get dry hot and have a sea breeze in the avo. I wanna check out Brizzy too coz my favourite Aussies I've met have come from either perth or brizzy on average, and melb, Sydney are too big for my humble desires :D

One of the best kept secrets here in Australia is Evans Head, NSW. 3 1/2 hours south of Brisbane just over the boarder. Sleepy little seaside township with crystal clear glassy green water. The best damn prawns (shrimp) on the planet. Really good for a quiet getaway.

As a welded on Sydney resident I have to admit Brisbane is a beautiful tropical city. Like Sydney it is a fantastic place to just walk and walk and take it all in.

Curly wurlies is English / Australian as are all the Cadbury’s products. Australia is renowned for great coffee. It was interesting watching as an Australian who lives in Brisbane and has a beach house at Noosa. I definitely think Brisbane is a great place to live. It isn’t a typical tourist destination.

Home town Melbourne lived worked Sydney but Brisbane was my favourite.Layback,great weather easy to get around not too populated nor overdeveloped, yet! New Farm(Sat.Market) is my other love.Running along the boardwalk toward town.You seemed to venture north side of town.It's nicer there near Teneriffe Ascot Windsor etc.

I'm not from Brissy, but it's probably one of the most laid back cities here & one of the warmest of the capital cities so probably one of easiest places to land in initially but other places are all different.
Right back at you for the US, as there are plenty of places in the US I found equally good as here.
OMG YES!!! I noticed how healthy conscious the Aussies were too... Sure they have junk food, but the majority of Aussies eat really good ... Many I met were Vegetarian and Vegan...
I think it’s more because we do have access to high quality fresh food. We produce a lot of very good food here.
