1991 CR500 Startup Sequence

  • Starting a CR500 is not something to be taken lightly! When I first bought this bike in March '08, it would take 13-15 kicks before firing up. Exhausing! Now imagine doing that halfway up a muddy hill. shudder (I know, I know...I should always make it up the hill, then I don't have any starting issues...)
After doing lots of research, I found that carb setup is key to starting these bikes, and set about getting mine dialed. It also seems that each CR500 has its own particular startup sequence.
So I got the carb dialed and the sequence down, and now I can start her in 1-3 kicks 90% of the time (but halfway up a muddy hill sometimes takes a few more kicks...).
This particular day, I wanted to see if my 1-3 kicks worked after the bike had sat in my garage for exactly 6 months. Not that I was timing it; it just worked out to be exactly 6 months this day. :-)
Because my voice isn't very loud, and an airplane flew overhead pretty low, you can't really hear what I was saying. I was trying to talk through the sequence, so I'll spell it out here.
DISCLAIMER: This is the sequence for this particular bike, so it may or may not work on yours! :-)
(Jetting setup correctly comes first; if not, these steps don't work!)
    1. Fuel on
    2. Choke on
    3. Tip it over till it weeps; basically just kills time while the float boal fills up, and then you know when it's full and can move on to the next step
    4. Put it in 2nd, roll back and forth with the clutch lever *out*; get's some fuel in the cylender
    5. Put it in Neutral (I use my hand most of the time because neutal is impossible to find on this particular bike)
    6. Find TDC
    7. Kick it as hard as you possibly can. A half-hearted kick will reward you with nothing but a viloent kickback, and maybe a bruised shin/foot...even with a boot on!
As you can see from the video, even after 6 months of sitting, 3 kicks will get her burning again.
    Thanks for watching!

TDC compression stroke is when youve got the most resistance against the kick starter. On the bigger 2 strokes open the throttle all the way and slowly kick it over 2 or 3 times, this primes the cylinder with fuel. Then find TDC compression stroke and give it a full swift kick, no throttle.

I have a KX 125. Set up ( In the yard ) for about 3 years. Drained the carb and got fresh gas and started 1st kick.

I have a auto clutch in mine. It made priming it and starting it a lot harder. But it's so much less tiring in the woods and never stalls. I've got the head off now. I'm sending it to a guy that puts a custom compression valve on the head by the petcock. Even if I dump it in gear. It's still running. I had a guy walk up in front of it while it was idling on the kickstand. He just had to give the throttle a little rip. It lunged on him and knocked his ass down hard. LOL.

@@shoruda I rode 8 years in the national forrest here without an autoclutch on my 96 cr5. After the install. I can ride all day and not be even close to as tired as I was before. Don't knock it till you try it. Started riding big bore 2stroke in 73. Nothing likem

Great powerful kick action. Only way to get a big beast started. I start a YZ490 like that, even harder and its areal pig, good 15-20 kicks to get it started.I always hold the clutch in though while im kicking.

If you blow into the side overflow of the carb with a clean hose for 10 seconds it will also start first kick.

Here's some startup sequence for ya, Mix 5 gallons (I mix 2.5 gallons myself) of today's chit 92 octane fuel with VP Racing Madditive Octanium octane booster (21 bucks at the Autozone or 19.99 from Jegs.com it treats 10 gallons of fuel) to raise the octane level to 100 octane and add AMSOIL Saber two stroke oil as directed, I mix mine at 80:1.Set your jetting per Pro Circuit recommendation, prime the crankcase with fuel with the kickstarter 2-3 times than start the bike. After you do that it will start first kick every time without having to prime as long as your engine is healthy like no leaks at seals, base gasket,ect..Take it into the field and set your jetting for what your engine likes, DONE, The Honda CR500 engine was designed to run on 92-100 octane leaded fuel in 1985 and the design has remained virtually unchanged up to it's demise in 2001. it is a 2 cycle engine just like a weed eater, START IT LIKE ONE. Go for a ride and HOLD ON!, you'll see why its call the beast. If you live near Chandler,Arizona. You can go to the Loves Truckstop on I-10 they have 110 octane leaded race fuel for off Highway use only, but you'll have to have the head milled for higher compression or bad things will probably happen, my 1985 CR500 love's that fuel. It's said that Honda tuned down the CR500 from 1985 (dropped down the compression ratio to be precise) because it was too powerful of an engine for riders but i believe that is false,1985 was the era when America was transitioning from leaded to unleaded fuels and had to drop octane #'s so automobiles didn't need the lead to keep from knocking (lead is and anti knock additive for those whom don't know this already) and the CR500 couldn't run correctly with it's high compression. I can't type so this took me quite some time to do,hope ya'll appreciate it.

Breaking out the case at the kickstarter bearings is what kills these motors. (can't be welded)
Get it pumped up so you can feel the resistance of the motor. put kickstart is at the top of the stroke. then slowly slowly ease the kick starter down thru half a stroke until you feel a detent feeling. then return the kick start to the top. and kick it. It'll start like butter. can be done in regular shoes.

@2013wabs TDC is basically where it's the hardest to kick. I'll make a video if I get around to it, but its not really an exact science. :-) As for the starting problems with your KTM, I can almost guarantee it's an issue with your carb setup. I'll bet you can find an online forum where guys will help you dial the carb on your specific bike. There's probably even a ktm 380 starting sequence on youtube someplace...

Wow...way too much extra crap to get that thing lit. If your top end is in good shape, and your jetting isn't crap you don't need any of the lean to the side, rock back and forth mumbo jumbo.
I turn my gas on, give it 4 nice easy kicks to prime it while holding the kill switch, and then one big healthy man kick from top dead center. Will light one or two kicks every time.

  • @greg657
    @greg657 7 лет назад

Why not just try taking the piston one bump past TDC. Alot easier on the kickstarter, gears and your foot. There's other vids of people starting large bore 2 strokes. Pay attention to the sequence they use. There's no jumping on the kickstarter or rocking back and forth. Carb set up is not the answer unless there's issues withe carb itself. As long as the float bowl has fuel it will run on the enrichment system(choke).
