    I'm sure that you've clarified this in other videos that I haven't seen yet, but the '87 and '88 CR500s are virtually mechanically identical, with the only substantial difference being the color of the plastics and the seat. The '88 was the same color as the '89. Also, I believe that the '96 thru 2001 were mechanically identical. Nice collection! I had an '81, and isn't that a non-stock throttle on yours? Whatever you do with that '81, don't bottom out the rear end. Those were known for bending and breaking the shock shafts! Don't ask me how I know!!!

    How do you decide when and if to preserve them. I mean with that many bikes, what do you do to keep them from deteriorating whilst on display?

    • @CharlieFerer
      @CharlieFerer 2 года назад

      Hi Ronald! That is a great question. I try to keep them as original as possible if going to be a collector bike and not ridden. With that said though many of the bikes I buy I try to find as original as possible. Most of the time these bikes need a complete rebuild down to the frame and at that point I would start from the frame up and Powdercoat the frame, rebuild the engine, rebuild suspension, do a nut/bolt refresh. I prefer to do a full motor rebuild now using Ryan at Factory Edge than try to do one years later because it is getting harder to find parts for these bikes. I will be dropping a video in the next couple weeks on how to prep a bike for long term or display. This will answer your question. All of my bikes are in a climate controlled environment which greatly helps keep the current look of the bikes. Worst thing you can do is keep it in the garage or somewhere where it gets extreme heat temperatures during the summer months etc. and that’s what deteriorates the bikes the fastest.

      Correct. Race class is 1981 - 1983 (drum brake) and 1984 - 1986 (front disc only class) so I prefer the 1986 over the 1984. Just like I prefer the 1983 over the 1981 for racing/collecting. Those are the best out of those race class years.

  • @michaelmays9292

    The 1982 CR480 isn't that far off from the 1983 480

    • @CharlieFerer
      @CharlieFerer Год назад

      I would greatly disagree. The 1983 is redesigned and a better ergo bike for rider. The 1981 was one of the worst Honda builds and least reliable. The 1982 was a little better. Because of this Honda for 1983 redesigned everything and even the motor is now completely reliable and now has a better transmission with 5 speed. The front brake has a lot better stopping power with a dual leading shoe. They also improved the front forks besides the forks being a larger diameter. Shock has new linkage and more adjustable. Also cool for 1983 is the removable sub frame. The rear brake was redesigned for better pull in as well to the brake shoes.
      The 1983 is one of the most reliable air cooled bikes Honda manufactured. In my eyes you can not compare the 1981 and 1982 model even though they look alike. Remember for vintage racing this class is 1981-1983 and you want to be in the 1983.
      Someone. Told me the 1983 is lighter than the 1982 but when I ride both they both feel heavy lol.
