Freddie hadn't been diagnosed with HIV at this stage, but his doctors had advised him not to do this concert as he had a throat infection. No way was he not going to do it though. He said after the concert that it had felt like he had glass in the back of his throat when he was singing. Definitely watch Somebody to Love at Montreal 1981- it is mesmerizing. I remember it got hot and I remember the roar of thd crowd and the buckets of water chucked on us and the bouncing balloons and of course of course of course the music from Status Quo right through to Wham to watching Philadelphia on the big screen. Can I also say, good on you for calling out those who claim to have 'never heard Queen before' and fake reaction videos. Your reactions to Radio Gaga, Hammer to Fall (the best rocking song ever about the theme of 'we're all going to die', by the way!) and 'Crazy little thing called love' were so clearly genuine.
Just wanted to say, when you watch this again, note how Dr Sir Brian May PhD plays 3 different guitars in 'Crazy little thing'!
And Roger Taylor's vocals are amazing! He doesn't get enough recognition for his role in Queen's Live Aid performance. When you watch 'Somebody to love' from Montreal 1981, you'll see Roger in all his glory!
And the way Freddie simply worships at the greatness that are Brian's solos (especially in 'Hammer to Fall') show the humility of the man. He knew Brian was one of the greats.
Finally, don't take the film version of Queen's history as the truth - it isn't. It's more a 'representation' of the group's history in film form.
Keep going down that Queen rabbit hole, especially live. You won't be disappointed. (My brother saw them at Knebworth in 1986, but I couldn't go - bitter, me? Hell yes! I would have given my right arm to have seen Queen live!). I was 18 when Live Aid happened. I feel 18 again every time I watch this footage. RIP Freddie.

To answer your question. Freddie may have had in inkling that he wasn't well at this point but he didn't find out that he was HIV positive until 1987 (despite what the movie says, don't even get me started on that!). Also, Queen have always been a 4 piece band, it wasn't just Freddie then a band. They never officially split up but between 1982 and 1984 they had a little break and Freddie did indeed release a solo album, so did Roger. And again, despite what the movie says, Queen never "reformed" just for this gig. They had an album out the previous year, The Works, that had a full tour.

As I recall, this is when Queen’s popularity had dropped off a little bit. 2 minutes into this set Freddie had the crowd in the palm of his hand. Such a great front man and powerful voice.
And Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor are brilliant musicians. Don’t forget to give them some love.
So many great songs to choose from. Stone Cold Crazy, Death on Two Legs, Play the Game and Who Wants to Live Forever are some of my personal favorites.

If you talk to the band they will say it was all Freddie but we all know that it takes four men to make this magic.
They couldn't hear anything on stage, they were such professionals that all they needed was a look , a turn of the head, and they knew what to do.

It wasn’t only Queen who realized they had been sensational. Paul Gambaccini, who was part of the BBC broadcasting team at Live Aid, recalled the awe among other superstar musicians watching backstage. “Everybody realized that Queen was stealing the show,” said Gambaccini. These were the very words Elton John uttered when he rushed into Mercury’s trailer after the set. “You bastards, you stole the show,” joked the charismatic star.
“Queen smoked ’em. They just took everybody. They walked away being the greatest band you’d ever seen in your life, and it was unbelievable,” said Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters. “And that’s what made the band so great; that’s why they should be recognized as one of the greatest rock bands of all time, because they could connect with an audience.”
“It was the perfect stage for Freddie: the whole world”
Their impact was summed up by Geldof. “Queen were absolutely the best band of the day,” the Live Aid organizer said. “They played the best, had the best sound, used their time to the full. They understood the idea exactly, that it was a global jukebox. They just went and smashed one hit after another. It was the perfect stage for Freddie: the whole world.”

Yes, the impact of this at the time was far greater than most people today can imagine. So many live concerts going on in so many countries & being broadcast globally. If I guessed 3/4 of the population of humanity on the planet was watching. I might be exaggerating. But if I'm off, it wouldn't be by much. & It's just as likely that I'm under counting as it is that I'm over counting. Truly, this was a global event. & Very important to music & history.

Freddie hadn't even been diagnosed as HIV+ yet at this time. That he knew he was sick is what was said in the Bohemian Rhapsody movie but that was done for the sake of keeping the movie going and creating empathy for the audience. The movie is cramming 20 years into 2 hours so the time line really suffered in the movie. It was not a documentary so things like timeline really weren't all that important. Great concert, Freddie had the audience eating out of his hand from the very start. Live Aid was aid for famine in Ethiopia. Queen never split off until Freddie died. They did take a little time off because they were burnt out from constantly touring and producing albums year after year with no time off. The band had actually done some touring earlier in this same year so they were not broken up. Queen songs you probably haven't heard that are great I would suggest March Of The Black Queen (studio version), White Queen, live at Odeon, Hammersmith 1975, You Take My Breath Away live at Hyde Park, Somebody To Love live at Montreal 1981 and Innuendo (studio version) for starters. There is so much great Queen music. There are over 200 songs in the Queen catalog and then there are all the live performances so buckle up! Thank you for your reaction.

HIV wasn’t well-known at the time of Live Aid - my oldest brother died of it around 18 months after this, and it was only at that time that the UK government was doing a public information campaign about this, the “iceberg” tv ad, the “AIDS - Don’t Die of Ignorance” leaflet delivered to every house in the country, etc.

Supposedly the artists waiting backstage( who will remain nameless 😂) waiting for their turn to perform ,upon listening to how amazing Queen sounded + listening to the crowd's amazing reaction to their performance, didn't want to appear directly after them bcos they knew they couldn't possibly get the same reaction or participation from the crowd or match Freddie's performance!!
They said it sounded like an actual Queen concert !! Which is exactly what everyone said at the time + after live aid finished , I was there ,14yrs old + the crowd went abs bonkers when they arrived on stage + no-one on that day came close to them, U2's performance was gr8 but also couldn't touch Queen.
Put it this way, Queen's performance at live aid is the only performance that people still watch 35yrs later + watch in their millions .

He was unwell here, but (only) with laryngitis and performed against doctor's recommendations. Other than that he was still basically healthy here, and it shows! It's a common misconception (fed by the movie) that Freddie knew he was HIV+ here. In fact, the timelines were shifted in the film for dramatic effect.
Freddie was not diagnosed HIV+ (leading to his terminal AIDS) until 1987, two years after live aid. Although at this point here in '85 he likely feared or suspected that there was a good chance he had contracted the virus. You can really see the difference in his videos from 1989 onwards.

Freddie wasn't diagnosed at this point, they went on their last tour the following year, and Freddie understood that he couldn't continue with album-tour-album-tour because he felt weaker, subsequently in the following year 1987 he was diagnosed with Hiv. And Freddie had his solo career before and after this performance, but Queen never split, although their relationship was strained mostly because of Freddie's personal assistant, whom he fired around this point in 85. Three more albums with Freddie, in 86, 89 and 91. He also recorded his last solo album in 87. He was in the studio until june of 91 recording everything he could despite being really ill. His last vocals are on the song mother love, which was on the album made in heaven, released in 95. Freddie died on November 24 1991 at the age of 45. We miss him every day.
