I've had the pleasure of listen to Seong-jin Cho play live twice. Like Chopin, his musicality is also timeless.
Cho recounting him buying Zimerman's Ballades as his first CD actually reminds me -- my very first CD I bought for myself was actually Cho's very own recording of the E minor concerto and the ballades, which came out as I was entering university. It actually rescued me from some pretty severe burnout from the piano that plagued me throughout high school. Listening to it, I was in awe at the crystalline perfection of the fingerwork, how romantic and melting the voicing was, and simply how effortless he made it all seem. I listened to it and went, "I absolutely HAVE to work towards playing like that," and have followed Cho's work ever since. I doubt I will ever tire of his music, and he continues to be a role model for my music.
Please understand, Cho, that your work has had the same profound effect on others that Zimerman has had on you.

This lovely interview with Seong-Jin sees him at his most relaxed, with fine English, and with all the endearing charm that only this loveable young artist possesses. He grows more masterful year by year: his 2020 performance in Warsaw of the enormous Liszt B Minor Sonata shows how keen is his awareness of musical form, and how to deliver it with breath-taking emotion. We say of others: "You played so wonderfully!" We say of Seong-Jin: "We LOVE you!"

Down to earth-- paraphrasing: I didn't try to please anyone-- I just studied the score, the phrasing, articulation, rubato-- to try to convey his ideas....
Such humility is refreshing-- and his playing is brilliant.

Not to please the jury, but to understand the score (the music itself)... That’s what makes Cho such an intelligent and sensitive interpreter. And the fact that he sees himself playing the same pieces in a different way when he’s past 60. Wishing him longevity as a performer.

Well, 5 years after you played Clementi's Sonatine in that small local competition, you became the first prize winner of the world's prestigious Hamamatsu International Competition barely at the age of 15 followed by the 28-year-old second prize winner. Then again, less than 2 more years later, you won the third prize in the International Tchaikovsky Competition. Now you've become an artist whose music truly reaches someone's heart.

From his interviews, I feel that this young man has indicated that his ambition is to be a pianist and a good one, no less. As young as 10 years old after he had heard Zimmerman's 'sound' on the piano he must have been determined to play as well as he and be able to produce that sound, which he , glad to say successfully has.

The first CD he bought was Zimerman’s Chopin Ballades.... Years later, he’s released one of his own and I daresay he’s done some things that are on a level of refinement above Zimerman. In 2015, when i fell in love with SJC's playing, i inhereted a Bechstein grand piano. My (now) ex girlfriend taught me how to read sheet music and here i am right now, finishing up on a few nocturnes, finishing Reverie by Debussy and i have recently started to work on my first etude. It's an amazing journey and i enjoy every minute of it, no matter what the outcome. I just love playing Chopin. One of my main goals is to be able to play a ballade some day. I'm 36 now. I'll keep practicing another 36 years and i should get a long way, haha.

As for SJC., as he said chopin's music is timeless, one could relate and play his pieces in a verity different interpretations as they grow old. Thanks God, he listened to Zimerman not Pogorelich. That's why his Chopin sounds like Chopin and not like cossacks dances... Still can't understand why he didn't get the best concerto award.
On the other hand his DG recordings are pretty dissapointing, especially the ballades but... he's young and he's got time. Rubinstein's Chopin got cannonical when he was around his 60's.

He didn't get the best concerto due to one of the judge had sabotaged his score by giving him more 1 point while other all gave him high score! He ought be banned as a judge for that ridiculous stunt he pulled.

Kate Lui
