    It says that in a circular motion when a force is applied perpendicular to the direction of the velocity, the object change direction without changing its speed. But when we draw its vector diagram showing a horizontal force to represent the force for the horizontal movement in the direction of the velocity followed by a perpendicular force to it, the resultant vector though changes direction, changes its magnitude which must means that the speed does not remain constant. Can someone please explain this to me😕😕😕

    • @fuseschool
      @fuseschool  3 года назад +1

      Hi there! You must not draw a line showing a force in the horizontal direction. There is no force in that direction, only momentum. If there was a force (maybe from a rocket engine) then the motion would no longer be circular.

    • @saffansamnani6943
      @saffansamnani6943 3 года назад

      @@fuseschool it has been taught to us that if a force is constantly applied perpendicular to the direction of velocity of an object, the object starts to move in a circular path WITHOUT changing its speed. Right?
      But when I am drawing a vector diagram for it, the resultant vector though changes direction, its magnitude also increase which is why I am asking why the speed remain constant when a force is applied perpendicular to the direction of velocity.
      Hope you got my question😊

    • @fuseschool
      @fuseschool  3 года назад

      In circular motion the force is always at right angles to the motion, so there is a zero component of force in the direction of motion, so the speed of the object won't change. However, its VELOCITY will constantly change because velocity is a vector quantity composed of speed and direction. In your vector diagrams there is just one force, at right angles to the motion so it is just the direction that changes not the speed.

    why do i still fall if air resistance and weight are equal?

    • @fuseschool
      @fuseschool  4 года назад +1

      Excellent question! Many people think, like the Greek scientist Aristotle, that if something is moving it has to have a force acting. This is only true in places like on earth, where friction slows things down. To keep you falling at constant speed air resistance must balance the force of gravity. When you jump from the airplane the force from gravity is GREATER than the air resistance, so you accelerate. Only when the air resistance force is equal to gravity will you now fall at constant speed - your terminal velocity. If you now open a parachute, the air resistance force is much greater than gravity, so you slow down until the forces are once more equal giving you a much smaller terminal velocity. In this way you can land safely.
      Imagine a space-walker coming out from the spaceship. If she pushes with her legs she will go in one direction (fairly fast) and the spaceship will move in the other direction (fairly slowly). Once she has stopped pushing with her legs she and the space ship will move apart at constant velocity. No more forces are needed, constant motion needs no force! However, if she wants to return to the spaceship, she needs to fire a rocket engine against her motion, then the rocket fuel will go in one direction and she will be pushed back toward the spaceship. With no rocket she will go on forever getting further and further from her ship - forces are only needed to change her speed or direction!

      @@fuseschool correct me if I’m wrong but does this have anything to do with inertia? Like when there’s no external force (cause it is balanced), the object or in this case a person would persist in his or her motion with constant velocity or in a stationary position?
