Had literally just moved out of my house after finding out my partner had been cheating on me, basically, for the entire relationship. I had helped raise her son for years. My job collapsed as well, victim to the 2008 economic crisis. I was alone in a strange apartment, surrounded by the ruins of my whole life. My brain had been ramped to "11" for weeks: the shock and impact broke it in half, never turning off, never giving me a minute of peace. Sitting on a futon in my empty living room, I stupidly rented "Once". I shattered into a million pieces.
The first time I saw this film, this particular track made me cry for reasons that I didn't understand. I'd just gotten married the previous year, but I was already unhappy and beginning a spiral into addiction. A few short years later, my husband admitted he'd been doing terrible things in secret that I won't recount here, waiting for me to "discover that [he's] an inexcusably bad person" (his words). He told me I had "let" him become a monster, and that he'd never really loved me, and I was to blame for all of our problems. I took the kids and left him, but it was another year before I could convince him to divorce me. This song takes me back to that rainy afternoon when I first realized something was going terribly wrong. If I could go back, I'd tell my younger self that everything would be okay; I just needed to wind it up and let it go.
